Another trip back to the 70s, this guy I must admit that I consider one of the most under-rated stars of the 70s. A true monster.

Very diverse and able to have good matches with varying styles (Bruno, Backlund, Putski) He "made it big" in all three of the old major feds.

Some other random Patera thoughts

A true five star match vs Backlund (Texas Death match MSG January 1980 Wrestling Observer Match of the year) Beat Pat Patterson for the Intercontinental belt before losing it to Pedro Morales. I believe Patera was the Missouri champion in the NWA for part of his WWWF Intercontinental title reign.

Great on the mic and if you haven't heard his shoot interview - now that thing is GREAT. Gained alot of credibility through "The World's Strongest Man" contest. Loved the swinging neckbreaker finisher. Did not care for his work as a "good guy" but who could forget his "debate" with Bobby Heenan.

Ah, Patera.

Here's my take on this loser.

First off, love his career.  But he lost what I think woulda been the best years of his career because the dumbshit couldn't get a cheeseburger.

Solid matches early on, against Backlund as mentioned.  After he came back?  Nothin'.  It was gone.

And...I disagree about him being good on the mic.  Guys like Bobby Heenan were born to manage mumbletongues like Ken Patera.

All in all, I like the guy, but damn if he ain't a loser.

He was an awesome heel.  Sucked as a face.  He sucked after his trip to the slammer.  Not sure if that was because he was a face, or if it was just gone.

as you can tell by my avatar, Ken is my #1 favorite...why?   because when he came into the WWWF in late '76, managed by Captain Lou and weighing 290, he was the biggest monster heel I had ever seen and he scared the crap out of me...and then he BROKE Billy White Wolf's neck and Whitewolf and Strongbow had to vacate the tag titles! (I have that match on tape) I was a total mark for his arrogant brutality. I though he was unbeatable with Albano during his first run.

He "seriously weakened" Bruno during their series for the strap (Bruno's last series as champion at MSG, Jan-Feb-March 1977) which Bruno then dropped to Graham. I would love to see one of those cards on 24/7, especially Jan '77 which also had Strongbow-Whitewolf vs. the Executioners.

When he returned in 1980 he weighed 265, was managed by the Grand Wizard and gave Backlund a run plus won the IC belt. In between he was Missouri State Champion, Mid-Atlantic Champion etc.  He won a regional belt wherever he went.

He was one of the true greats, his St. Louis matches are great too-  anyone ever see Patera vs. Harley Race for the NWA title?  I think it was a St. Louis match.

Long Live Patera!  I hear he comes to some of the Legends shows and is cool to talk to as well.

I think his heel work was great & after watching his shoot he seems like one cool MF'er.

I am so with you there. The Strongbow HOF show had a brief clip (few seconds) of Strongbow & Whitewolf in MSG vs The Executioners. I geeked for it.

Anybody remember Patera doing "feats of strength" on WWWF TV? Where he blew up a hot water bottle like a balloon (it popped) Stunt (popping) was possibly worked but to get it to inflate like that was just plain amazing.

Have to agree that he wasn't the same after the prison term.

Not good on the mic? Geez I have to disagree with you there Mr. Bobby Backlund

Sounds like my opinion of him.  He's in my top 5 (Backlund, Bruno, Patterson, Angle, Patera & The Samoans).  Absolutely loved watching him pre-84.
I have seen footage after his stint in the joint and it's nothing like before.  I have no idea how he slipped so badly.

Thought like most others than he was absolutely great in his heel days durings the 1970s, early 1980s be it in the AWA or the WWF. Was memorable as opponent to Morales, Backlund and Bruno. His swinging neckbreaker looked brutal. His team with Blackwell in AWA was more entertaining than I expected it would be too.

What are you talking about?  I never said Patera was not good on the mic.  He is a great talker.

The "Mr Bobby Backlund" was me playing on how Patera talked. Didn't he always call Backlund that?
