We all know when the rumble started.  As in when it was called the Royal Rumble.  I'd like to see some thoughts on this card. I will be showing you two cards, only 6 months apart in the same city.  THe WWWF did not run two battle royals in the same city ever to my knowledge.  Actually the WWWF I dont feel was even big on battle royals.  But read the first one from July and see how the participants are entering this event.  Then the one 6 months later, is naturally the standard Battle Royal rules.  Also if anyone is curious.  Stan Hanson won the July event.  And Ken Patera won the Battle Royal in January.

So what are everyones opinions on this?

Amazing stuff Ron. Looks like they tinkered with a similar idea back in 1976 but then abandoned it. Not sure that "wrestling" was ready for such an idea back then.

The WWE would have you believe it was all Patterson's idea.

"Two at a time" seems to imply that it's more of a gauntlet match--guy gets eliminated when pinned or maybe thrown over the top, replaced by the next guy--rather than the modern Royal Rumble.

Looking at it in a Gauntlet fashion, think of the possible lineups of who was beating who.  Look at the possible heel matches.  We have Brody and Hanson, along with the Executioners who are the current Tag Team Champions. Then we have Scandor Ackbar, and Baron Mikel Scicluna  who (Scicluna) was still a threat to the World Title.

Did Bangor, Maine actually witness perhaps Brody vs Hansen, or Brody vs Kowalski or Hansen vs Kolwaski? The possibilities are endless of pure top heel matches if this was indeed a guantlet type match.  Even Big John Studd vs Kowlaski is a possibility.

You have to remember that Maine was the odd ball state in its booking.  It is where we find the Heel Champion Graham facing the top heel Ken Patera 2 different times.

Nobody in the late-80's WWF probably remembered this was tried before. If Patterson remembered it, good for him...he would still deserve the credit for the Royal Rumble idea, IMO.

I think we have a new gimmick for Count Grog and his GOUGE promotion. F.D. Jones. Fucking Douchebag Jones.  If Grog won't use it, maybe JR Benson will.
