1. The Entire Dusty Rhodes Vs. Ric Flair War
2. The comings and goings of the Horsemen
3. Sting becomes a major player on the first Clash of Champions
4. Ricky Steamboat as Eddie Gilbert's mystery opponent
5. Terry Funk breaks Ric Flair's Neck.

Here is the AWA.
1. Jerry Blackwell's babyface turn during and after the battle royal at the St. Paul Civic Center in 1984. Jerry took a colossal beating from Sheik Adnan El Kaissey, King Kong Brody, and Abdullah The Butcher, but won the fan's over in the process. Blackwell had been one of the AWA's top heels since 1980 and had been with Kaissey since the start of 1982. By the time it was all done, the AWA had a new lead babyface.
2. After getting put out of action for several months by Mad Dog Vachon, The Crusher returned and attacked Vachon in the studio in late 1969. Mad Dog bled a gusher the likes of which few had seen before. The AWA drew some huge crowds for the resulting house show matches and the feud was hot enough that it meant something big when Crusher and Mad Dog teamed up a few times in the mid 1970s and then split and reprised their feud.
3. Bobby Heenan debuted as the manager of Nick Bockwinkel and Ray Stevens before they face Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell in the All Star Wrestling TV studio in 1974. Then, when the babyfaces got into trouble, Larry Hennig made the save and turned babyface. This was the epitome of a hot shot angle since besides all this, Heenan took his first bump on his debut instead of saving it for later. Nevertheless, the angle worked and got everyone over.
4. For months Ray Stevens got cut off by the Heenan Family during interviews, plus he was made to look like the weak link since Nick Bockwinkel was World Champ and Blackjack Lanza and Bobby Duncum were the tag champs. When he got cut off once again during the presentation of the 1976 Manager of The Year award to the Brain, Stevens finally snapped and turned against Heenan and company, feuding with them for a good chunk of 1977.
5. This last one is purely for sentimental reasons. Bobby Heenan had been running down Buck Zumhofe for quite some time and then destroyed Buck's boom box, leaving a distraught Buck to pick up the shattered pieces. When Bobby Heenan wrestled all time AWA cult jobber Kenny Jay in the TV studio in November of 1980, it was to show everyone just how talented he was. Then Buck came to ringside and distracted Heenan who was promptly pinned by Kenny. The crowd erupted since Kenny always got demolished and Heenan threw one of his classic temper tantrums. Plus the ensuing Heenan vs. Zumhofe matches actually drew!Last edited on Thu Nov 5th, 2009 05:44 am by tamalie

I got to watch AWA/NWA/WWF/WCCW/UWF growing up since I had cable in the early-mid 80s so mine are from all over the country:
1. Andre revealing himself as Bobby Heenan's new protege and challenging Hogan to a match at WMIII, and also Jesse Ventura's reaction to it.
2. Buddy Roberts winning a hair match vs Iceman King Parsons but getting the Freebird Hair cream put on his head anyway, lead to the wig-under-boxing-headgear gimmick Kurt Angle would crib years later.
3. Dr. Death getting his arm broken in the UWF.
4. Piper going nuts and destroying the Flower Shop set.
5. Col. Debeers piledriving Jimmy Snuka on the floor, leading to a five star blade job and a 10 year old me thinking I saw a guy get killed on TV.

I would add The Greg Gagne-bobby Heenan match on AWA TV in early summer of 1980, where Bobby attacked Gagne before the bell with a cast and KOed him. That led to their Weasel Suit matches, most famously documented from the Civic Center on 8/17/80.
Heenan had soooooo much heat on him, Gagne winning the Weasel Suit match got a pop that a World Title change would envy.
and
Jerry Blackwell and John Studd injure Mad Dog Vachon in January of 1981, leading to the return of the avenging Baron Von Raschke. Between the injury to Vachon and the return of Raschke, the entire angle was superb and Raschke was instantly established as a superhero in the area.
Also as a result of that injury angle, the Blackwell-Vachon feud continued to run off and on through 1983, culminating in the Death match in Bloomington. The Buildup to that match, of course, gave us the Vachon-Okerlund "Pine Box" promo, which is one of the greatest interview/promo pieces done by anyone ever.

I'll add a Chicago Amphitheatre angle. Ernie Ladd turns on Sailor Art Thomas against the Texas Outlaws Rhodes & Murdoch. This eventually led to a great Ladd vs Dick The Bruiser feud.

A few other AWA offerings:
Bill Watts chases Dr. X's mask - this angle gave the AWA main events around the horn for better part of a year. Watts actually unmasked X on television, but as luck would have it, X was in a perfect position to keep his back keep his back to the camera, cover his head with his singlet and flee the studio.
Paul Diamond comes out of nowhere - the AWA tv format was squash oriented. What looked as if it was going to be a routine tv match between Dr. X and some new guy named Paul Diamond ended up being an unexpected great match going to a 20 minute draw. Diamond went on the be a star in the AWA for the balance of his time in the territory.
Bastein and Lyons chase the Vachons title - All the usual suspects, decisive wins by the challengers in "non-title" matches, screw-job finishes and reversals of apparent title changes. Kept 'em coming back for more.

A few more AWA angles of note:
- In 1977, The Crusher wants to face Super Destroyer and Lord Alfred Hayes in a tag team match. That way he'd have back up and Hayes would have to fight like a man instead of interfering. However, Hayes and Super D wouldn't sign for a match against Crusher and a quality partner. So Crusher got George "Scrap Iron" Gadaski to be his partner, proving just how badly he wanted the match. Hayes didn't want to actually wrestle the "grubby little man" Crusher chose, but didn't have a leg to stand on. The match was made.
- Bobby Heenan returned to the AWA in late 1979 and promptly stole Super Destroyers Marks II and III from Hayes. A humilated Hayes wanted revenge on the Heenan Family, but was in no position to do so alone. So he swallowed his pride and turned to The Crusher, whom he had spent the past several years feuding with, for help. Crusher agreed since he hated Heenan and company too, leading to matches with Crusher and Hayes against Heenan and various charges in 1980.
- Jesse Ventura got a great comedy angle in 1984 that didn't draw, but was funny and is fondly remembered. It was the old "arrogant heel thinks he's so great that he'll team with a lowly jobber and raise him up" angle that was used in a few places. Jesse decided it was time to "give Jake a break" and started teaming with Jake "The Milkman" Milliman. This led to some great interviews and matches that featured Jesse talking up Jake, running him down, and bullying him.

My earliest memories from mid-to-late 80s WWF, which I watched religiously.
1) The Andre turn on Piper's Pit where he challenges Hogan for Wrestlemania III and then rips off his cross and T-shirt.
2) Orndorff turns on Hogan during the tag match against Studd & Bundy
3) Piper face turn after being jumped by Adonis, Orton, & Muraco and the destruction of the Flower Shop
4) Savage crushes Steamboat's larynx with the ring bell
5) Honky Tonk blasting Jake with the guitar on the Snake Pit
Other promotions:
UWF
1) Terry Taylor turns on Chris Adams
2) Sting turns babyface
3) Eddie Gilbert and Dick Murdoch break Dr. Death's arm
4) Big Bubba wins UWF title from One Man Gang
5) Shane Douglas wins the UWF TV title from Gilbert, who is supposed to face Sting until Taylor jumps him in the aisleway. Later on, Sting runs in with his head bandaged and costs Gilbert the title.
NWA/JCP: I didn't get TBS then, so these stand out in particular.
1) Flair's dream date with Precious
2) Hiro Matsuda chokes out Johnny Weaver, who bleeds from the mouth.
3) Ronnie Garvin winning the title from Flair, which took up the entire hour of World Wide
4) Garvin knocks out Dusty Rhodes
5) Luger leaves the Horsemen
World Class/USWA: only things that really stand out are.....
1) Christmas 1987 - Freebirds and Iceman beatdown Fritz before Kerry wrestles Al Perez in the cage
2) Eric Embry beating PY Chu Hi to end World Class and usher in USWA.
3) Taras Bulba beating Kerry clean with the claw.

| That was the fall of 1987. They were building up the Lex Luger-Dusty Rhodes cage match for Starrcade '87. If I remember correctly, the storyline was that the Hiro Matsuda had taught Lex a sleeper hold, so Dusty recruited Johnny Weaver to teach him a sleeper hold as well, the "Weaver Lock". That led to show down of sleeper holds between Weaver and Hiro in which Hiro refused to release the hold and Johnny bled from the mouth until Dusty made the save.
