I was looking at the Observer Newsletter awards for Most Disgusting Promotional Tactic and I have no idea what it was in 1981. It is listed as monster factory from LeBelle Promotions. Can someone explain what exactly this is?

Well it could be two things.

I think "Monster Factory" was the name of Larry Sharpe's school, but I wanna say it was on the east coast.

Or...

LeBell was REALLY shitty by the end there, and I wanna say he was among many promoters who tried using a wolfman and a mummy.  Maybe that's what this is all about.

Yeah, they trotted out a guy in a Frankenstein outfit and tried to actually pass him off as being made from dead body parts, then put him over everybody as a monster heel.  The promotion would be dead by the end of the year.

Sounds like just another day in Memphis to me.

I actually saw that with my own eyes at the LA Sports Arena not long after I moved to LA.  Stocky guy in a halloween mask led out in chains by his manager.   Impervious to pain, built in a laboratory...blah, blah, blah.

Even stupier than it sounds, if that's possible.

If I recall, it really blew up when he wrestled Andre the Giant. Andre ended up tearing up and or off the mask. Frankenstein ran away or something.

Reminds me of Prince Kharis in SMW.  A centuries old mummy who bled dust.

Bob Duncum Sr. did the "mummy" gimmick in San Antonio. As bad as it sounds, it's worse.

Ironically that gimmick was probably the prototype for Kane.

Wasn't some of the criticism directed towards the idea that they claimed that the promotion itself commissioned the building of the monster?

For the era this was seen as the ultimate insult to the fans' intelligence. Sure none of the Russian heels were really from Russia and none of those battle royals really had $20,000 in prize money, but at least the theory was that stuff was at least plausible in comparison to The Monster being built in a lab which was considered corny and over the top. Jeff Walton and Gene LeBell also claimed on commentary that The Monster had been built in a laboratory, so it was not just the heel manager who brought him in, but also the promotion itself that made these wild claims and that also upset a lot of the smart fans of the day. Obviously the standards of disgusting promotional tactics were severely lowered in subsequent years.
