The lack of 15 PPVs a year. Feuds and storylines could build slowly and take time to develop instead of being blown off in a month. It made the matches seem more important.

Alot of it has been said already. To me, the top thing was they put it over as a legitimate sport. Angles were twice a year not twice a TV show. Title belts were very important. If you go back to the 50's, even the jobbers were fantastic mat technicians.

They made it "look real".
They made you get emotionally involved.
There were no "demographics"; if you were a fan, you were a fan, male or female, 8 or 80.

You could actually watch it with your family. Heroes and villains, right and wrong were more clearly defined. The good guy champ would only resort to heelish tactics if provoked to the point he could take it no longer and by that point, the fans were behind him. There was a lot less sick crud.

No obligatory diva's match on every show

No 3 ways and fatal 4 ways because the writers needed to get as many people on the show as possible

Title belts meant something

Localized interviews

Unscripted promos

I thought you quit posting here.

I did.  This isn't me.

I think it's simply the "fundamentals" that have been lost in every sport.  They can't compete athletically or physically with what guys do today, but every time I watch an old tape with someone who was good (and let's not glamorize, most of the old guys sucked balls worse than Chris Masters so I'm only talking about the top 15% or so) I see something subtle that I absolutely mark for and wish guys today would do.  A unique submission move with a little extra hook that made it look so real or a realistic transition from one spot to the next.  There's that little attention to detail that makes it easier to get lost in the match.  Of the guys today, really only Regal and Finlay come close in that catregory.   But like I said, that's only the top guys, a huge percentage of them couldn't hold Stevie Richards' jock and were simply embarrassing and business-exposing every time they stepped into a ring.  Those glasses need to be particularly rose-colored to continue to hold most of the work of earlier eras on a pedastal.  But I love watching Pat O'Connor, Dory Funk, Jr., the Briscos, Nick Bockwinkel, Gene Anderson, etc.

Doc. You do realize these guys are kidding and that posting (what seem to be legit angry responses) .... not good. Relax.

Boards been open six months and we have only had to take one thread off the board. Let's not make it number two over something of no real substance.

BJ, I am dealing with funeral arrangements right now, and have a short fuse.  I know they are kidding.

It's cool.

You really missed the tone of the board the first few months here. Then we had the pissing match (over nothing) and then I saw number two coming up and we really spent months kidding around and hassling each other before you came over and I thought you missed that.

Sorry to hear of funeral arrangements but certainly wish you and everyone close to you the best.

Gogo makes a great point here. For all the talk how legitimately portrayed wrestling was back in the day, you had wrestling bears. You had freak show wrestlers like Maurice "The French Angel" Tillet. Hell he was even the World Champion and beat guys like Lou Thez. You had Gorgeous George as one of the top stars. You had the ballet dancer Ricki Starr. Gimmicks have been around a long time. VKM didn't invent them.
