I was watching some old matches with Tex McKenzie from ICW.  I never got his gimmick, appeal, or character.  I know he was supposed to meet the needs for the local Texas wrestler, but damn, this guy was not really that good.  Whatever happened to him?  Any thoughts on this guy?  Maybe he was the pre-Magnum TA of the 70's.

Argentine Apollo?  Was he a cheap ripoff of Antonino Rocca? Whatever happened to this guy?

Some of these guys seemed to disappear after the ICW went defunct.

The only time I've ever seen him was on "Cheap Seats" on ESPN after AWA Classics.  They ran an ICW show and made fun of it.  It was just atrocious and Tex was doing commentary and was slightly better than Adamle but slightly worse than Coach.  Just an abomination.

Both McKenzie and Apollo are no longer with us.

Rip Hawk is the other guy that made a weekly appearance on the shows that I have.

As bad in the ring as he was, Tex McKenzie worked on top for several years in a number of different territories. He was over despite his clumsiness.

Apollo was a Rocca clone but also had a long career working on top quite a bit.

Sometimes we look at old tapes and say how in the hell could this guy be pushed. How in the hell could he draw money? In the cases of McKenzie and Apollo, they did get pushed and draw money as hard as that is to believe. Tex more so than Apollo.

We didn't grade matches by "stars" then. Wins and losses mattered to the fan at least and if you believed it was real, then a win over Ivan Koloff (or whoever) meant you were legit and could beat Ox Baker next week also.

Personalties mattered more then also. Compare to today where alot of guys look the same and other than a dozen guys the rest do not distinguish themselves well from one another.

How much of a difference was it to be really tall back then? Tex was very tall if I remember right...maybe that had something to do with it.

Other than that guess, no idea.

Tex was pushed because of his height. They billed him as Sky High McKenzie in Dallas. The cowboy gimmick was very popular back in the day.

The thing about Tex was how awkward and dorky he looked even walking around the ring.  What was worse - watch those tapes again and look at his 'punches'.  The worst I ever seen before or since.

Tex was indeed REALLY dorky - but you can see how he got over at that size.  Happy go-lucky cowboy.

Incidentally, his interaction with Jack Whatshisface (name escapes me) on play by play struck me as really gay too.

Hawk,Apollo & Tex were over the top in MACW I never cared much for the IWA but especially Hawk was a very good mat wrestler & he and Swede Hansen were one of the better teams I ever saw, Tex was dorky though LOL

All true.

Apollo was teamed up with Rocca during Rocca's last run in New York.  Apollo took the spot that had been held earlier by Miguel Perez.  Apollo was one hell of an artist and eventually left wrestling to pursue his art career.

One of my favorite Cheap Seats shows.

As they recap the stuff they announce they have to scan past, they show big Tex on the screen wearing pants with no pockets... and the Cheap Seats boys notice.

"Hands in the pockets... nope; it's hands on the hips then!"

I loved Tex McKenzie when I was a kid.  he was entertaining and did well (what i thought was well) against The Sheik or Pampero Firpo, or in the IWA vs Koloff, Ladd, etc.

Watching him now yeah we critque workrate too much but in 1973 I thought he was great.

Okay, seriously now...if Tex was wearing pockets with no pants, do you think Tex would really know?
