When Rude passed away in 1999, I remember reading that it was a heart attack, or an accidental overdose, or cancer. If Rude had cancer, does anyone know when he was diagnosed?

Rude died at the age of 40 on April 20, 1999 after suffering heart failure. He is survived by his wife Michelle and their three children. An autopsy report showed he died from an overdose of "mixed medications"

Hey cunt.  Show some respect.  His kids and wife might read this message board.

Pretty much. I heard he was gearing up for a comeback in WCW and was back on the juice big time.

I heard he had a heart attack on the course at Golf Club of GA in Alpharetta, which is a wicked course. I know Zbyszko plays there too.

He left the WWF after the Montreal incident. He was in WCW managing Curt Hennig in the nWo when he died.

I wouldn't say right before. He was in WWF and able to do ECW be ause they were working together, then he jumped to WCW with no warning. But he was in WCW for at least a little while before he died. He burned his bridge with Vince, he'd be back in the fold by now I'm sure but at the height of the Monday Night Wars to do what he did, Vince was going to be super pissed for years. He wouldn't be wrestling for WWF anytime soon.

In 1999 when he died, I could have seen him going back to,WWF when his deal with WCW was up. Vince would have forgiven him well before he would have for others(like Jarrett)

Supposedly what happened was that Rude was on a per-night basis in WWF.  Bischoff found out and signed him to a contract and that did the whole "both shows not live on one night" thing where he shaved the beard to prove Nitro was live when Raw was taped.  From what I read at the time, he was training to come back to wrestle in the WWF, not WCW, because WCW would not and could not sign him as a wrestling performer due to him not being able to pass their corporate physical and because (again, I think) Lloyds of London tried to sue WCW claiming that Rude wasn't as hurt as they made it out to be.

If the reports at the time were correct, Rude died of an overdose of GHB, which he was using in his training to come back.  What is sad is that Rude on his worst day was in better shape than most people in wrestling at that time, but he was determined to come back stronger than when he left.

For what it's worth, I really liked Rude and still miss him in wrestling - he was a great performer.

I was glad to read in the Torch or another newsletter about Rude planning on returning during the late 90s boom. I was hoping Vince would take him back and we would see a Rude vs Austin feud.
