Posted this at OSW, and had 160 views and no replies, thought I would throw it up here too, anyone got any clues on this? On a few of the old Macchia tapes of WWF footage, there are matches from a few shows that occurred at the steel Pier in Atlantic City. Gorilla does the announcing and calls it Championship Wrestling. I believe that this is all in the summer to fall of 1979. My questions are this: Did they do this on a trial basis in place of the regular Championship taping in Allentown? Was this an alternate taping with matches spliced into the normal Championship Wrestling show? Was this in addition to the normal Allentown and Hamburg tapings, and a 3rd TV show? Does anyone remember watching it and recall how it was structured? Thanks

There were shows at the Steel Pier rather regularly. I will check this for you but I am thinking there was either another event in town (State Fair?) that may have knocked them out of the box for a taping or two or when they aired the matches from Ac it was just a match or two. I don't recall any "entire shows" coming from AC in all honesty. I will ask my Allentown source. ![]()

There were other shows. I distinctly remember a Andre & DiBiase vs Scicluna & Jerry Valiant match on TV as well as a Valentine vs DiBiase match all airing from AC.

I had a bad copy of the Andre/DiBiase tag match at one time. Monsoon was doing the commentating. I got the distinct impression that it was taped for airing on some small New Jersey cable channel - there were no commercials. It wasn't designed for replacing one of the regular tv shows even for a week or so. It was definitely a house show atmosphere with Scicluna and Jerry getting a ton of offense in the long match - not typical of a tv squash.

I'm gonna bet that someone named "1978Fan" might know a little bit about 1979 also. I think his explanation is pretty plausible.

Which isn't saying much for WWWF TV where we were treated to such TV main events as Steve Travis vs Baron Mikel Scicluna ~ a little bit of a bad rap I guess as us WWWF geeks were (quite often) treated to the tag team title changes that were always "shrouded in controversy"

Hey, I liked Steve Travis. And by the way, there's this off-the-charts Snuka vs. Travis match at MSG which has to be his best match ever. Really awesome if anyone has seen it. And Snuka sold for him big time. Last edited on Thu Nov 8th, 2007 07:12 pm by srossi ____________________ This thread was great before AA ruined it. |

I liked Travis. Don't think I have seen the MSG match vs Snuka. He went to a timelimit draw with Scicluna at a time when Scicluna was being beaten regularly. Didn't do much for Steve. I remember Travis being "The Rookie Of The Year" (78?79?) and the only other person I remember being referenced to such an award was Larry Zbyszko. Maybe Tony Garea. But they didn't "give it out" every year.
