Did Sgt. Slaughter ever really serve in any branch of the military?

I always wondered how awkward it must have been for him throughout his career when he was doing appearances or was in the presense of military personnel and this topic came up.

Everyone is clearly overlooking his years of service for our country battling the evil forces of Cobra.  How quickly they forget.  And so close to Memorial Day too.

I'm hearing that Mike Rotondo never worked for the IRS either.

I met him in the Philly airport in May 1988 when I was going overseas.   He played the role that he served as he waited for his flight.  I met up with another guy and we were dressed in our uniforms, so we approached him.  He did not talk all that much.  After learning he did not serve after that incident, I now think he felt awkward.

Is it certain that Bob Remus never served in the military? He was born in 1948. Even if he just served as a private at some sleepy stateside base, he was 18 to 21 in an age when good numbers of people in that age range served, even as reserves.

Googled was was sgt slaughter really in the marine corps. Many stories that he was in the Marines right out of High school. Many Non Wrestling News sites  stories say its true and not just a angle.
