I thought we already had a thread on this years ago, but I could not find it in the archives.

Was Apter the originator of this theme?

I could not find any of the old pics in which they would block out the eyes of the women with a black block.  Does anybody remember that?  Confidentiality?

Looking back on this......this was some really corny stuff.

they were in every Apter mag I bought at my grimy local newsstand in Mass. circa 76-78 - even on the cover...you'd see a couple of what looked like 50s era strippers in bra and panties and stockings right above the huge bloody Dusty Rhodes head.

Kind of embarrassing to a 12 yr old for your mother to see and not tantalizing at all..by then we already had Hustler mags stashed around.

Really bad, lame stuff. Was there a time when this was even a little titillating?

I seem to remember that a lot of the " matches " involved a rich spoiled princess going up against a girl from " the wrong side of the tracks ".

Apparently this got popular enough at one point that Sports Review put out it's own magazine:

Did all the stories start with " I'm from a small mid-Western town and I never thought something like this would happen to me. " ????

Wasn't "Seka" the queen of apartment wrestling?
Edit-apparently, she was. Here's a quick Google link to some guy who's WAY into this: http://www.ahwgallery.com/misc.html

Why block the eyes? Was it portrayed as an underground business?

Yeah, I got chastised on occasion when my sisters or ither relatives saw them scantily-clad wonen on the cover.

I don't remember so I pulled a magazine out.
"The morning sun through the drapes of lace caressed her alabaster skin. Nell lay motionless on her bed ,feeling the warmth of sunlight and watching a sparrow walking across the limb on a tree outside her window. Through the lace curtains, the little bird appeared ghostlike and almost its own shadow.
Suddenly a larger shadow swooped down. A Bluejay attacked the sparrow. In what had to be a second but seemed like an eternity, the blujay pecked at the helpless sparrow. The smaller shadow fell from the tree. Nell stared helplessly. Brutality always had a horrible fascination for this young woman for whom money could spare any pain.

Those matches now take places in condos. More upscale.

Theo Ehret may have started this craze, but young lasses named Thoreen and Mercedes must have found it unsettling if in later years, Suite 7A was somewhat claustrophobic as Frank Amato, George Napolitano and Apter started crowding the sofa for the best angle on the reverse backbreaker.

I think that Stanley Weston was still the publisher at Victory Sports at the time.  I think Apter worked for him at the time. A perfect fit for the 70's.
