AWA Championship: Billy Robinson vs Nick Bockwinkel (c)

Hulk Hogan and Tito Santana vs Ken Batera and Bobby Duncum

Not the rarely seen Ken Batera

Oddly enough, when I first started watching wrestling Hogan was feuding with Ken Patera and his partner Jesse Batera.  Later I thought his name was Jesse Vatera.  Eventually I realized they were saying Ventura.

Was this show supposed to have Hogan challenging Bock for the title, but he left and they switched to Vachon?

I think so. They supposedly received the infamous telegram from Tampa sometime before that. Verne thought Eddie Graham was playing a rib on him and threw it away. When Hogan no showed Christmas night Greg called him and that's when he confirmed he was leaving for New York.

The AWA knew Hulk Hogan was gone well before the Christmas 1983 card. Ads in the Minneapolis paper in the week plus before the card billed Mad Dog Vachon as Nick Bockwinkel's challenger. Hogan was not promoted as appearing at that event by the time of the ads. I don't remember, but would concede he may have been billed for the card on TV initially, but Mad Dog was the named challenger on TV before the card took place.

Mad Dog was absolutely supposed to be in the 8-man tag instead of Ray Stevens.  Pretty sure Dr. D was a late scratch also and was supposed to be on the heel side instead of Adnan.
That said, I can’t wait to see this.

WWE really giving AWA fans some love this Christmas

7th day Hidden Gems (Thursday)

Below is the synopsis for the upcoming AWA event coming to the Hidden Gems section:

AWA 12/25/1984 – AWA Christmas Night 1984 [Duration: 01:44:01]
All of your favorite AWA Superstars including Curt Hennig, Nick Bockwinkel, and Bruiser Brody are featured on this Christmas spectacular.
With Day 7 on the horizon, another video will be coming from the AWA. As mentioned previously, the AWA is a section many have felt has been disappointing on the streaming service and shamefully neglected, but these Hidden Gems have really focused quite a bit on the promotion. And this may be the best video yet, as it will be nearly two hours in length clocking in at one hour and forty four minutes long. The synopsis mentions two matches from the lineup in particular, though most if not all of the card will likely be available.

Below is the card for the event that took place that night:

Billy Robinson vs. Steve Olsonoski
Steve Regal vs. Baron Von Raschke
Mr. Saito vs. Jim Brunzell
Curt Hennig vs. Nick Bockwinkel
Jerry Blackwell and Greg Gagne vs. Bruiser Brody and The Masked Superstar
Road Warriors vs. The Fabulous Ones
Rick Martel vs. Jimmy Garvin

Was Curt Hennig injured at the time of the event? He was a ref for a couple of matches.

Curt had just begun his career. It was very common in the AWA for young babyface wrestlers to serve as referees in addition to working low on the cards. Various guys who became long time wrestlers, including some future big names, did this.

One of the Nasty Boys (I think Sags) can be seen refereeing a lot for a year or 2 before they formed the team.

He would be a month shy of being a wrestler 4 years at the time of the card. It could be because he just came back to AWA from WWF & Pacific Northwest

Or it could be that the AWA just followed the same protocol they had since inception for their young guys to pay their dues and/or make an extra few bucks.  I have some AWA shows that had Iron Sheik as ref and it was either 1976 or 1977 I think.
