4th day of Hidden Jems (Monday)

For the sake of transparency, here is the official synopsis for AWA Christmas Night “1982”:

AWA 12/25/1982 – AWA Christmas Night 1982 [Duration: 01:05:25]
WWE Hall of Famers join forces when Hulk Hogan teams with Tito Santana to face Ken Patera and Bobby Duncum on Christmas Night 1982.

Tomorrow, WWE is planning to release a 65-minute version of the AWA Christmas Night 1982 event. However, that at least partially isn’t true, because the description (and video thumbnail) actually refer to the semi-main event of the 1981 card. This was a tag match pitting Hulk Hogan and Tito Santana against Ken Patera and Bobby Duncum. In 1982, Hulk faced Jesse Ventura on Christmas Night.

So, what’s going on? Is this just a case of brazen ineptitude? While possible, there is actually a decent potential explanation for the blunder. Both shows took place in the St Paul Civic Centre exactly one year apart and yet both also coincidentally included a Brunzell and Gagne vs Blackwell and Al-Kaissie tag match – 1981 featured it in the mid-card, while ’82 placed it in the main event as a title match. Finally, once you consider that the previous truncated 1981 card that was released yesterday (promoted merely as the aforementioned tag match despite featuring 3 bouts from the night) is out of order, it seems that the WWE Network team are doing their best to piece separated matches together in order to give us as “complete” events as possible, and thus the similarities between these cards confused things.

So, what are we getting? There are two possibilities. This is either a genuine chunk of the 1982 card with a misplaced 1981 Hogan bout or it’s the rest of the 1981 show mislabelled. If it’s the latter, we could see the following unreleased footage:

Buck Zumhofe vs Bobby Heenan

Hulk Hogan and Tito Santana vs Ken Patera and Bobby Duncum

AWA Championship: Billy Robinson vs Nick Bockwinkel (c)

If we’re getting part of the Christmas 1982 show, we’ll see some of the following with the misplaced Hogan Bout included:

Buck Zumhofe vs Tom Lentz

Baron Von Raschke vs Jacques Goulet

Ken Patera vs Steve Olsonoski

Rick Martel vs Bobby Heenan

AWA Tag Team Championships: Jerry Blackwell and Sheik Al-Kaissie vs Greg Gagne and Jim Brunzell (c)

Lots of unseen AWA stuff there whichever year it ends up being. Excellent...and quite frankly this is likely how we will get AWA stuff since most of the TV without the interviews is not great at all.

I’m really hoping they upload the 12/29/85 NWA/AWA Star Wars from the Meadowlands.
