I believe it was a strap match & Ventura did some very serious and calm commentary on it. He narrated it like it was a life or death situation If I am remembering it correctly

I still have the question of who decided to put Orton and Piper together.   That was an extraordinary decision.   Piper with the great mic skills being teamed with a great technical wrestler like Orton.
Some have said it was Piper's idea while others have credited Geirge Scott with the idea.
Whomever came up with it; it was great thinking.

First time I saw Piper live was at the Cow Palace in the 70's vs MoonDog Mayne. Piper wouldn't start wrestling until he got silence to play his bagpipes. Piper was awarded the belt when both the shoulders of Mayne and Piper were on the mat when ref counted. After a few days of protest and video review they couldn't tell who pinned who so belt was upheld until rematch. Unfortunately Mayne died before the rematch.

WWE Hall of Famer Roddy Piper will be laid to rest in Portland, Oregon on Wednesday 8/12. That is the day after WWE is in the market for a Smackdown taping, so the services are likely being delayed so those who work for the company can attend.

I have not seen Hairpin-AH post on this board for awhile. I was wondering his opinion is of how the passing of RP will impact the cult of frags from the old Piper message board.

This really sucks. Even though I found out about his death when every one else did,  it wasn't until I watched the WWE tribute video that Brian posted above that it really hit me that he is gone. Young fans today do not know how good guys like us had it. Those of us old enough to have watched 30 or so years ago. Guys like Piper, Orton, Muraco, Adonis, Hogan, Snuka, Orndorff, Andre, Shultz, I can go on and on. We had it good as fans. Just Piper's Pit alone...I mean come on....what can I say?

Rest In Peace Roddy Piper

OR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 4, 2015

**MEDIA ALERT**

Private Roddy Piper Memorial at The World Famous Comedy Store in Hollywood, Planned for August 17, 2015

A private memorial is in the works for beloved pro-wrestler, actor and comedian “Rowdy” Roddy Piper who passed away last week at his home in Hollywood, California. Set to take place Monday, August 17th at The Comedy Store, this private memorial will include friends from all facets of Roddy Piper’s life and career which ran the gamut of wrestling, acting, stand up comedy, live and broadcast TV, film and numerous business and charitable ventures. His closest friends/colleagues in L.A. will share stories and experiences about Roddy over the years.

Organizer and Roddy Piper friend, comic Steve Simeone said of the event “The Comedy Store is the adopted home of so many ‘comic orphans’ and Roddy became like a dad or big brother to all of us. He became family. I wanted to have a get together where we could get up and share our favorite stories about this incredible man who we all love and will miss greatly. This is a night for Roddy’s friends to celebrate what a great friend he was to all of us.”

Roddy Piper’s daughter, actress Ariel Teal Toombs had this to say about the memorial, “I know a lot of friends who will appreciate something like this in L.A., especially because the funeral will be up in Oregon and a lot of folks won't be able to make that trip. It means a lot that Steve and the Comedy Store family are putting this together.” Pro-wrestling & Mixed Martial Arts agent, producer and longtime friend of Piper, Rick Bassman commented, “Roddy’s sudden death has hit all in the pro-wrestling and fight world pretty hard. I’m very grateful that the Comedy Store is doing this for our friend, and we intend to go the distance to insure that Roddy is remembered in a manner which would make him proud.” Helping to organize this send off is Mitch Ackerman, Roddy’s best friend who remarked, “I appreciate all the love and support from all the friends and fans of Roddy's. Other than Madison Square Garden I don't think there is a more appropriate place to have this memorial than at the Comedy Store”

The Toombs family invites the worldwide public who can’t attend Roderick George Toombs’ private funeral or memorial to a moment of silence, planned for the same day and time as Piper’s private funeral, August 11th at 10:30 am PST.

He was clean pinned, 1-2-3 in St. Louis after taking a flying crossbody from the top rope by Jimmy Snuka in St. Louis, 1984.  The entire match was on the Best of the WWF Vol 3 and can probably be seen on YouTube.  Other than that one-off, I think you're right - he didn't get pinned in his first WWF run, and that includes his run with Hogan.

It is the first match.

Unclear if this is open to the public, but I'm going to miss it by 1 day.  I fly out to L.A. on Aug. 18.  I really would've made an effort to go to this if I was in town.
