From Herb,

--Here's a name some older fans may remember, Kal Rudman will be honored tomorrow night in Philadelphia at the Person of the Year at the 16th annual Broadcasters Pioneers Hall of Fame. Rudman, the FMQB publisher, did commentary and backstage interviews on WWWF broadcasts of the Philadelphia Spectrum house shows on Prism in the late 70s and early 80s

Rudman is one of LAF's faves.

He and Dick Graham have never been surpassed in the booth for pure ineptness.  They were probably the most in the dark duo to ever announce a match.  Classic.

Love "Killer Kal". It was like him and Dick Graham didn't even watch the Saturday TV broadcast as prep first before showing up and calling the matches at the Spectrum.

Kal Rudman is my favorite announcer who was never smartened up EVER.  I've told so many great Kal tales on boards over the past few years.  Good to see he's still alive and kicking.

Here's a question to you all: Does the WWF get Cyndi Lauper if she isn't friends with Kal Rudman? Did she meet Albano along the way, or did Rudman hook all of that? I think that Killer Kal had a largely unknown part in the Rock N Wrestling connection because he was so connected in the music world. There's an MSG show from 1986 where for no particular reason, Finkel introduces Sammy Hagar as the new lead singer of Van Halen and Rudman is there as well.

#1 Rudman moment: He interviews the Moondogs and asks them if they like girls.

Classic! And then they growl at Rudman and he shrieks like a girl and goes "Ah, the breath.  It stinks!  Get away! Ah, the smell!".

I think so.   If he suspected it was worked, he certainly never really understood it.

My favorite Rudman story that I personally saw was an interview that he conducted with Sgt. Slaughter.  Slaughter started making fun of Backlund for visiting children's hospitals instead of preparing for their match.  Rudman was just beside himself, getting so legitimately upset.  After Slaughter left, Rudman apologized to the home viewers for his comments and said something like, "I was just talking to Slaughter before we went on the air and he seemed like such a nice guy.  I don't know what happened, maybe the pressure of the match is getting to him.  But I know that Slaughter does a lot of charity work himself and those comments are very out of character for him."  Just completely blew up his heel heat.   And since Rudman never seemed to watch any WWF TV other than what he called, he didn't even seem to know who the heels were or what the angles were, he just knew how they interacted with him backstage in real life.  When there was a recent heel turn, Rudman wouldn't know about it so he'd be stunned when the guy started cheeting and sometimes he seemed almost in tears as he screamed, "Why?!  Why is he doing this?!  He must be in a bad mood tonight or maybe having personal problems because he would never cheat!"  In fact Rudman would often talk about what nice guys the heels were outside the ring and bring up a lot of real life situations that he happened to see in the locker room that broke kayfabe.  But everyone always seemed to legitimately like him and treat him well, I would've expected the heels to be mean to him to protect kayfabe but they never were.

January '84 Spectrum show. Sheik is defending the title against Tito Santana. Before the match, Kal interviews Sheik and browbeats the fans who throw things at him and boo. Because the Sheik is a really nice guy who has to take care of his family!

Classic.

I didn't even realize that the Sheik's one defense was televised.  I had always heard about that match and assumed it was hard to find.

It's an odd card. Backlund loses by countout to Masked Superstar and gets booed out of the building. He got booed out of the Spectrum every time he wrestled there in '84.

Now is this a legitimate "getting booed out of the building" (like even 30% as bad as what Cena often goes through) or is this a smattering of boos?  Because I have to say that I've watched a lot of the old tapes where Backlund was supposedly beeing booed and it's very noticeable that he's not nearly as over as Bruno or obviously Hogan, but he's still getting cheered pretty vociferously.  You'll hear a pocket of boos and against an opponent like Superstar you'll definitely hear supporters for the heel, very rare for the day I know, but overall I think Backlund's booing has been exaggerated.  But this is Philly after all, so who knows.
