There is a major name on the free agent market in professional wrestling, and Sports Illustrated has learned that WWE and GFW/Impact are negotiating with Rey Mysterio.

Mysterio, 42, is currently seen on El Rey’s Lucha Underground. He is signed through the end of the third season, which is set to air in September, and would then be free to work with any company after his 90-day non-compete clause expires.

There is strong incentive for both companies to make Mysterio an offer he cannot refuse. WWE needs a big Latino star, as well as a great ambassador to Latin America. GFW/Impact is very motivated to move away from Alberto El Patron and generate some positive headlines by inking the legendary Mysterio.

WWE also holds an edge with its state-of-the-art Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. Mysterio’s son, Dominick, is pursuing a career in pro wrestling, and could benefit from the opportunity to train at WWE’s PC.

The possibility also looms that Lucha Underground will swoop in with an offer to retain Mysterio, yet El Rey has yet to announce a fourth season for the show.

WWE will pay him a lot more, but they will stop respecting him when they get bored after his hype dies down (which will be a matter of weeks).

GFW will make him their world champion and he'll be in the main event forever, but no one will see him, and he'll make more money selling masks at house shows.

His relationship with WWE ended very poorly, but I'm sure they want him back for a brief run and the HOF and the WWE Network special and the DVD and ambassador appearances and all that, as well as pushing the merchandise again (which was a big seller for many years). I can't see him actually getting much of a push though in the ring at this point. Honestly, he's 42 on shot knees and it's a miracle he can even walk at this point and hopefully saved some money, he probably should be ready to wind it down. I don't see what a GFW run will do for him.

The perfect idea would be for them to finally do that Most People Wearing Masks world record at next year's WM. He could put over Kalisto, and everyone would be a winner. That's too sensible, though, so they will probably do it and have him squashed by Kane.

That mask idea always sounded retarded, but if WWE is willing to put LaVar Ball on Raw I guess there are no depths they won't sink for 10 seconds of mainstream press.  I just don't see the appeal at all though.

Wacky world records like that make mainstream TV, even if it is in the "and finally" section.

It's a great visual. A 10 second clip on the news or on Access Hollywood and a picture in newspapers and all the online news sites would get play.

There's a picture of Rey Misterio and Konnan hanging out with R-Truth on Monday.

PWinsider:

As Dave Scherer noted earlier today on PWInsider.com, former WWE World champion Rey Mysterio Jr. was in Nashville last night and met up with several WWE talents who were in town for Raw.

Mysterio and Konnan were in Nashville as Mysterio met with Global Force Wrestling officials earlier in the day to negotiate a deal with the company, PWInsider.com has confirmed.   We are told by several sources that Mysterio "has a contract offer in his hands."

Mysterio was last seen on The El Rey Network's Lucha Underground series, which is completing the airing of its third season shortly.  A fourth season has not yet been announced.  Mysterio signed a "first look" deal with the cable network in 2016 to develop projects for the star, but as of this writing, nothing has been green-lit.

Mysterio left WWE in 2015 following a long run there that including winning several WWE World championships, including a Wrestlemania 22 win over Randy Orton and Kurt Angle.  Over the course of his career, Mysterio has been a major attraction for ECW, AAA and WCW as well.

Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated is reporting that WWE has passed on a potential Rey Mysterio return, citing that WWE's disinterest in working with Mysterio's management team, including GFW star Konnan was a major reason.

As previously reported by PWInsider.com, Mysterio has a standing offer from Global Force Wrestling.

If Mysterio missed out on his last chance to get a big WWE payday because Konnan is part of his "management team," the man is an idiot.

PWInsider reporting that negotiations with GFW have ended without a deal.  GFW likely can't afford anywhere close to what Misterio wants.  As previously reported, it seems like he is not returning to WWE anytime soon either.

Misterio says he now wants to step back from in-ring action and concentrate on training his son Dominic, who has been involved in angles on Lucha Underground TV recently.  Dominic was of course involved in a Misterio-Eddy Guerrero angle in WWE when he was a small child, and has developed into a huge guy who dwarfs his father.  If LU continues, Dominic seems poised to make his debut there, and then of course the goal is to get him into NXT.
