A guy from work suggested that I listen to a Wade Keller podcast about Bruno.  I do not think I have even listened to more than three podcasts.  I just never got into them.

I read the summary and one of the guests on the show was going to be historian George Schire.  Yikes!

Anybody know anything about this Wade Keller?

He’s Meltzer-lite. He’s run the PW Torch for decades now.

Must be a younger guy because he does not remember Sammartino vs Zbyszko feud. How in the hell did he hook up with Schire?

Keller is almost 50 so I don’t get how he can’t remember that.  He must’ve become a fan late.

Schire is not a bleeding asshole on this show like he is on the message boards.

Most people aren’t. Message boards bring out the worst in people. To this day everyone swears that Percy Pringle was a great guy and I’ve never interacted with a bigger douche online.

Buddy Rose?  Then again, I don't think anyone has ever said he was a great guy.

I liked Buddy. We PM’d many times on KM and he was always nice to me.

Rose was a complete narcissist on the boards and in messages he had with me. I thought he was a true dick who suffered from some very serious MH issues. It seemed he lived his life worried about his legacy and was on a demented crusade to keep him and his career relevant. His messages were all over the place in content and tone. Could have been a bi-polar disorder or alcohol/drug usage, but he was definitely a warped soul.

I had no time for the ass.

LOL

The sad thing is that I could see Rose taking you up on that suggestion. There were some serious issues there. Many liked to say that was Rose playing the audience, but there were others who knew him said that he did have some deep mental health issues.

Keller is/was a Minnesota guy, and he's young enough to have just missed the feud in the magazines if he got into wrestling a little bit later than I did (he's 46 - same age as me). Totally possible he didn't have WOR in Minnesota or just didnt get the magazines. I didn't start watching until '83 and only got AWA at the time.

Bryan Alvarez is just as bad as not knowing anything about wrestling pre-95 but I think he cops to that as well. Not a too young excuse as he is old enough to have been around the Don Owen era but I guess wasn’t interested until the Monday Night Wars.

I get it but it is very limiting.

And when he does go back and review old shows he and Connie mainly make fun of the shows. Missing the entire point of what the shows were back then.

Blazer is on base about Wade Keller. He's from the Twin Cities and is in his mid 40s. I think he was pretty young when he started the Pro Wrestling Torch, maybe 16 and no older than 18. I subscribed for a number of years, still have my old copies, and had a large number of back issues thrown into a supply of various old wrestling newsletters I bought a number of years ago. I was never as much of a fan of that publication in comparison to the Observer and the Figure Four Weekly when Bryan Alvarez still wrote the print version. Wade deserves credit though. He's still making a living at this and was ahead of the WON/F4W when it came to diversifying and monetizing the website.

Wade would have been 7 or 8 when the Bruno vs. Larry feud happened. I'm not sure what part of town he's from, but Minneapolis and St. Paul proper were definitely not wired for cable when that feud happened and it was scattershot in the suburbs. WOR-9 from New York was largely unavailable on local cable systems. Minneapolis proper and its immediate western and southern suburbs only had had for a couple of years in the late 1980s. Apart from WTBS, the main superstation in these parts was WGN-9 from Chicago which never had wrestling until WCW had WCW Pro on for a couple of years in the early 1990s and WWF Blast Off, a highlights show, for a bit in 1996-97. Wade truly had no opportunity to experience the feud as it happened via TV and was probably too young for the magazines or at least to get its significance if he did get the mags.

Wade was/is friendly with the likes of Mick Karch and others in the Twin Cities insider fan circles going back to before the internet made everyone an insider. So it's natural that he's met and gets along with George Schire. Having met George in person on one occasion, he actually came off as a very nice guy without any of the negative issues that clouded his internet persona. He's just someone who was of an age and a personality type that he didn't get the internet and its etiquette and customs. He also made the mistake of initially working his Authority heel fan gimmick to disastrous results which only exacerbated the other issues. I also think George lost a bit of himself when he went from being the guy who knew more than anyone to just another internet fan. That said, he had the opportunity to break out of that by getting more into the behind the scenes aspects of the AWA, which aren't greatly known compared to other territories, but that didn't interest him.

You nailed George perfectly. I've met the man, much better impression in person.
Ironically I visited with George at his house with a long time IWC poster, Weaselsuit. To tie this into Mr. Keller, Wease was Wades roommate for a while and so he knew him quite well obviously. Some of the coolest AWA footage out there--the AWA Raw Footage from the Civic Center in 1984 and 1985--comes indirectly through Wade. Wade had the tapes from Mike Rogers (if I am remembering the name right), and Wease ended up with them (or copies of them), which he introduced to the IWC through me back more than a decade ago.
Keller was a much bigger deal in the internet in the talk circles we all frequented back in 2000 and for a while after that. Now it's all Dave-Dave-Dave, but yes Wade has done well with what he has and what he did with his newsletter.
