How many of the Russian heel characters from the 1950's and on were Russian's or Americans of Russian ancestry? I really wonder if there were any in reality, after reading the post about the Rugged Russian tag team, who were actually Cuban.

Ivan and Nikita Koloff are REAL RUSSIANS, I remember them talking about visiting the Kremlin on TBS back around 1985. It doesn't get any more real than that in wrestling.

Seriously though, the only one I know for sure was that big guy that Jerry Jarrett hand delivered to Vince McMahon and pretty much hasn't heard from Jeff since that day. I think they called him Vladimir Koslov but can't remember. I think his real name was Oleg Prudiev or something like that.

I dont  know of any 'real Russians' but a tip of the cap to the storylines that the Russians were going to take the world title/US title back to Russia and defend it there

Fun topic. No "big" names jump out at me, so checking via Wikipedia:

-Aleksander Chekov (modern indy guy)

-The French Angel (Big name, but born to French parents, while they were living in the Russian Urals; not a "real" Russian)

-Volk Han (MMA guy who dabbled in Japanese wrestling in the 90's)

-Salman Hashimikov (Worked in Japan. Beat Vader for the IWGP strap in 1989)

-Mikhail Ivanov (current indy wrestler)

-Peter Sauer (German who was born in a German colony in Russia; another guy who wouldn't be a "real" Russian)

-Victor Zangiev (Japan guy)

-Alexander Zass aka "Samson" (strongman/wrestler from the vaudeville days of the 1880's)

I also like to think that Boris Zhukov was a result of those dastardly Russians in the 80's.

Sometime in the early 80's, the Russians were in a clandestine operation against the US's black ops group code-named "The Cobra Corps". The op went south and the Cobra Corps were just barely able to make it back; thanks to Pvt. Jim Nelson making the "ultimate sacrifice" to help the team escape.

A few months passed and everyone assumed Nelson was a casualty. Yet, then a new Soviet operative named "Boris Zhukov" began appearing in the US. Rumors were that Zhukov was a victim of Soviet brainwashing(a la Bucky/The Winter Solider) and was in the US to spy and report back, every so often (similar to how Mork would call Orsen).

There were also rumors that Nelson actually was a casualty of the original op. Yet the Soviets were able to recover part of his DNA and create the clone that became "Boris Zhukov". To this day, the mystery of "Boris Zhukov" is unsolved-- is he a clone or a re-programmed Nelson?

I'd tell you more, but there's a black Suburban that just pulled up, outside my office. The falcon has flown. The chair is against the wall. John has a long mustache.

Nikolai Volkoff deserves mention for singing 'The Russian National Anthem' before each match -- along come the olympics and I hear the real 'Russian National Anthem' -- aint nothing like what Volkoff sang.

Wasn't Volkoff in a small plane accident one time and stayed in character when being interviewed by the press? This NOT happen in USSR, only in USA and then the spit. For some reason I seem to recall that.

With freedom of travel now, we could see a lot more actual Russian heels in the future.

I heard years ago that it was the Polish anthem. Why he didn’t sing the real one I have no idea.

Volkoff was from the former Yugoslavia, I think.

Boris broke character during an indy show and ran to the dressing room and returned and Private Jim Nelson.  I can't remember all the details, but I read about it a few months back.

All I know is a guy named Boris Zhukov requested me as a Facebook friend and keeps posting things about Pizzagate.  I wonder if it's all connected.
