Selling is a carny trick to work the marks too. Literally everything in wrestling is.

In Bret's book, he was always bemoaning that a match "needed" blood when he wasn't allowed to do it. For me, there is no match that gets an "extra star" for the blood.

We sometimes talk about things that make you embarrassed to be be a wrestling fan. Where if someone were to walk in on you watching wrestling and ask you what you were watching, you wouldn't have a good answer. I have McMahon vs Undertaker on that list. Right up there with a bra and panties match as something that, for me, I can't defend. Then or now.
Yeah I find it highly disturbing that the man who is probably the single most knowledgeable historian on the Amarillo territory doesn't like blood :tongue:

Kriss, don't watch Starrcade '85 anytime soon.  I think every guy on the card except maybe two ended up bleeding.  Re-watching that years later, it was almost comical.  Every match had blood.

I think it was absurd and further exposed the business instead of enhancing it. I mean they only bleed from the forehead, with no swelling/bruising, no bloody lip and no bloody nose. Dumb.

I agree with many of the posters who say that blood is necessary for gimmick matches. Other matches don't really need it. I can not watch a woman's match that has blood. It just seems wrong to me.

I think a little blood is okay for an angle; as it can really sell the viciousness of the heel. In 1988, when Andre choked out Hacksaw, it seemed EVIL. Hacksaw bit down on a capsule and spit out "blood", but it really put the angle over. Instead of just a random brawl or confrontation between two guys, it added drama.

They did the same thing about a year later, when the Rougeaus attacked Shawn Michaels' throat to start their feud (which was all set up over entrance music and singing... but I digress).

I'll also agree that it's only necessary in gimmick matches. Sometimes it happens "organically" and that's okay. I'm thinking of that UK tournament match, last year, where some guy (Danny Burch?) cut the back of his head.

I am of the view that if you need to blade, you're not wrestling properly. A great match does not need blood.

Once in a while it helps to put something over the top. Hart/Austin or Taker/Michaels. But it has to be very rare. Because when everything is special, nothing is special.

I love blood when it´s accidental. Like when Brock beat the shit out of Ortons face I mean everybody was shitting bricks and I don´t know wether Randy Orton bleedded intentionally or not but I thought it was great, I mean Orton´s doing OK now so it´s all good. When people bleed convincingly or there´s so much shit going on in the ring it doesn´t matter is also great. WWC was the best for this.

It was a planned hardway spot.  So convincing that Jericho got in Lesnar's face after the match for being reckless.  Vince has a different set of rules for Lesnar than everyone else.

I have zero problem with blading as long as it fits in with the storyline and the pace of the match. I always had an issue with a match starting and there's blood in the first 5 minutes of the match, that only means that the guys don't want to work hard so they'll use blood to fall back on.

I like it, but if it went away I wouldn't care. In the kayfabe era it was necessary to get angles and the brutality over, but everyone knows it's fake now, so what's the point.

I love it...Or should I say loved it. Wrestling for me is the shits now. I'll get up for a big main event match once in a while. In this day and age that is the only time to use it.

I do miss a good sneak attack where the heel would bust the babyface's head open to kick off a feud.

I miss the territory days, but they ain't coming back. Never again will I mark out for the likes of Abdullah, Lewin, Brody, The Sheik, Leduc, Dusty, King Curtis, Funk, etc.

I loved seeing it at a house show as a kid. I loved seeing it on the magazine covers. I just loved me some crazed heels. The day Abdullah dies will be to me, similar to what Beatles' fans felt the night Lennon died. ;-

I'm very much for blading. To me personally, nothing has taken the allure away from my enjoyment of wrestling is a no blood policy. However, like most have already stated on this thread, it should be used in only certain spots and never overdone. There was a period in the mid aughts where the ban seemed to have been lifted for a while. JBL, Guerrero, Cena, Batista, and of course the usual suspects like Flair, Undertaker, Trips and Boy Toy would let the rivers flow. Will blading ever be a thing again? Who knows, but I love me some wrestler blood on my TV set.

A parent would have felt good about little Mark coming home from the newsstand with that magazine. If the Heenan picture wasn't enough, little Mark could read all about the rapist invading the girls' dressing room.

Yeah, leave that one on the coffee table.
