Wow!

PWInsider:

Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley revealed in an interview with The Baltimore Business Journal that Ring of Honor has secured a date with Madison Square Garden and will debut in the legendary arena in 2019.    Ripley did not reveal the exact date and referred to the move as part of a strategy to move ROH, which Sinclair has owned since May 2011, to bigger venues.

As previously noted on PWInsider.com, the Garden has been reaching out to other wrestling companies as WWE has not been running at the venue consistently, choosing instead to run the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. With MSG not receiving any WrestleMania 34 week events, it's entirely conceivable that Ring of Honor could be running the Garden opposite WWE that week.

The article noted that a ROH event has sold 10,000 tickets for Chicago.  That event of course, is the Bullet Club-themed "All in" event, which has been built around the idea that it was financed by The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes, who are intimately involved with all behind the scenes aspects of the show.

Cody and the Young Bucks teased that "All In 2" could be at Madison Square Garden during the recent ROH NYC Excellence event at the Hammerstein Ballroom.
As previously noted, Mexico's lucha libre promotion AAA  has also secured a date for The Garden in September with holds on 9/16 and 9/23. Whatever group runs MSG first will end up becoming the first promotion to run the legendary Arena outside of the McMahon Family dating back decades upon decades.

What do these companies need to draw to really make anything at MSG? I have to imagine the rent is going to be significant.

Although they certainly want to profit, the statement made by running MSG, and especially if it's full, is the primary motivator.

There seems to be no conceivable way that a relatively small-time operation can make money at MSG unless they cut them a hell of a deal just to tweak WWE and become more inviting to other wrestling companies.  MSG's rent is absurd and other than Knicks and Rangers games, they seem to be dark most of the time these days.  Almost every concert and event that used to automatically go to MSG now goes to Barclays.  Bands like Iron Maiden, who have had relationships with MSG for 30 years, now play Barclays instead because of how much cheaper it is to rent the building.  MSG just seems to have "fuck you" money and doesn't care that no one can afford them anymore.  Anyone else would have trouble keeping the lights on if they priced themselves out of the market.  I have to believe that MSG is giving them a deeply discounted deal to test the waters of non-WWE wrestling going forward.

I'm not sure if MSG would need to do give ROH any sort of discount. I just looked at the coming events for Madison Square Garden and there are more events booked in the next approximately six months at MSG than at Barclays. That does not include all the NBA and NHL games that will fill the calendar at both venues in equal numbers starting in the fall. Barclays Center has certainly taken some events from MSG, but I think Nassau Coliseum and the now defunct Meadowlands Arena are the bigger victims.

Ok is this the actual main arena or the Felt Forum which this week is known as the Hulu Theater? As of about 12 years ago, I know for a fact the Garden was charging the "E" a cool 250k to rent for a night. Unless like Rossi said, the Garden DRASTICALLY cuts that to say fuck you to Vince, there's no way ROH could do this.

A quarter mil? That seems crazy, what kind of money is the E paying to rent a regular basketball type arena for a smack down or Raw?

The real MSG.  The Felt Forum wouldn't even be a story. Non-WWE events have run there before.

Maybe they could get Willis Reed as a special guest, but give him a map lest he get stuck trying to find his way into the main arena these days... a seven foot Spinal Tap walkout.

Ring of Honor has lost its debut event at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

During an interview with ROH Chief Operating Officer Joe Koff this morning to promote the 6/29 Best in the World PPV, I asked Koff about the pending debut for ROH in MSG. Koff responded:

“You know, I’m going to tell you Mike because you are asking. I’m not going to discuss beyond this statement because I am not going to litigate this in the press. We had a deal with [Madison Square] Garden and they then told us they were backing out after communications from the WWE. We are not able to get any other dates in any kind of discussion. I’m expecting that our lawyers will be contacting all the parties involved and the best we can hope is that we can find a resolution, so we can bring the kind of energy and excitement that ROH and our partner New Japan to a bigger audience and to bigger arenas and to the fans of New York City. “

Sinclair CEO Chris Ripley revealed in an interview with The Baltimore Business Journal on 6/12 that ROH had secured a date with Madison Square Garden and will debut in the legendary arena in 2019. Ripley did not reveal the exact date and referred to the move as part of a strategy to move ROH, which Sinclair has owned since May 2011, to bigger venues. The belief among many is that the date would have fallen on Wrestlemania 35 week in April 2019, something ROH never confirmed officially.

Today, when asked if there was even a possibility of a date still on the books with MSG, Koff responded, “There is no date and the discussion is going to end here on that.”

As previously noted on PWInsider.com, the Garden has been reaching out to other wrestling companies as WWE has not been running at the venue consistently, choosing instead to run the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Lucha libre promotion AAA out of Mexico had also secured several dates for The Garden for the fall of 2018. There is no word yet whether AAA's potential dates have been canceled by the Garden as well.

If any promotion does end up running Madison Square Garden, they will become the first pro wrestling company to run the legendary "Mecca of sports-entertainment" outside of the McMahon Family dating back to 1925, when Vince McMahon’s grandfather Roderick “Jess” McMahon became the matchmaker for both professional wrestling and boxing in the venue.

While WCW, AAA and even the original Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling ran the adjacent Theater in the MSG complex, no promotion outside of WWE has been able to book a date in the 20,789-seat Garden.

PWInsider.com has reached out to WWE for comment.

MSG worked ROH just to send a message to WWE. I guess they aren't happy with the Barclay's Center getting so many prestigious events while MSG was left out in the cold. Clearly, WWE got the message they probably resolved whatever differences they had. ROH was used. They don't have the resources to sue MSG. They will go broke trying.

I am Sure it only Vince that cares since it a Family thing.

They didn't even book anything for Wrestlemania week at MSG next year.

From a business stand point WWE should just not care about MSG anymore. Its all about Barclays Center.

They run MSG what 3 times a year if that, and when was the last time they did TV there?

Well they're owned by Sinclair Broadcasting so they have more than enough money to sue anyone if their parent company thinks it's a big enough deal.  I'm sure Sinclair has a team of lawyers on retainer who will see if it's worth their time.  I doubt it will come to that, but they have resources.
