Sounds like he could be out for a while.

PWInsider:

For those of you who weren't happy with how Sami Zayn was presented in his Money in the Bank match against Bobby Lashley over the weekend, there was a reason Zayn was wiped out in such a one-sided fashion.

PWInsider.com has confirmed with multiple sources that Zayn had been working through an injury and that the PPV was his last date with the company before he took time off to address it.

Zayn, 33, was not backstage at last night's Raw and we have been told that he is scheduled to travel to Birmingham, Alabama this week to be examined and to have an injury (which we have not been able to confirm the nature of) deal with.

WWE star Sami Zayn was interviewed this evening by WWE's official website, confirming our report on Tuesday that he was in Birmingham, Alabama due to an ongoing injury issue.

In the interview, Zayn revealed that he has injuries to each of his rotator cuffs, explaining, "I just underwent surgery for my right shoulder, a.k.a. my good shoulder. So, I’m out for a little while with that. I guess people don’t know about this injury; I’ve been working with it for some time. I don’t know exactly when I tore it. I think I tore it, or initially injured it, on a Montreal Live Event. Which is ironic because I injured my left shoulder — now somewhat famously — in Montreal in my [Raw] debut against John Cena. And at a Live Event this past August wrestling Jinder Mahal, I think I injured it then. But then my left shoulder, a.k.a my bad shoulder, started to act up again as well. That shoulder hasn’t quite been the same since surgery anyway, so I had just kind of gotten used to the fact that that shoulder was the bad one. But it started to get progressively worse, so basically, long story short, it turns out I have two torn rotator cuffs. The left one and the right one are both torn. I just underwent surgery on the right one, and then in about six or seven weeks, I’ll be undergoing surgery on the left one, and hopefully I can come back healthy and happy."

As he noted, Zayn underwent the first of several surgeries today and told WWE.com that he hopes to be able to return by Wrestlemania 35, which would put him out of action for ten months.

PWInsider.com is told that due to the nature of Zayn's injuries, he will be forced to rehab the first injury before being able to undergo surgery for the second one, necessitating the lengthy time out of the ring.

PWInsider.com wishes Zayn a speedy recovery.

I never want to see anyone injured but 10 months away will probably do him and his character a lot of good

Zayn had surgery on his right shoulder in June and just had the left one done yesterday.  Obviously he's out for quite some time as he rehabs both.

When a wrestler gets injured in the E does the wrestler pay for their own surgery or does the E cover it?

Not many.  Before this, he suffered a knee injury in ROH more than 10 years ago and then had that freak shoulder injury before his WWE debut with Cena in 2015.  That's all I can think of.  That's not a lot for a wrestler.
