Recently heard a story on Bix and Zellner's podcast about Mr. Wrestling II and JYD having a match at the old Auditorium in New Orleans.  II loaded his kneepad before hitting Dog to end the match, but the kneelift missed so badly (JYD didn't feed into it close enough) that the fans actually questioned the move and thought JYD took a dive on purpose to "throw" the match.  Other people kinda accepted reality and couldn't suspend disbelief and knew wrestling was fake once and for all.  Supposedly the crowd erupted in boos, people left pissed, and the attendance fell by 50% in the next month's show.  Legend has it that this killed New Orleans for Watts.
I had never heard this story and found it fascinating.  Does video exist of the end of this match?  I scoured Youtube last night and couldn't find it on its own, but maybe it is buried within a video.

I would love to see this match if it exists. I've heard JYD had problems working in the sense that he'd exposed the business. For example, fall forward when he should have fell backwards and things like that. I've never heard this particular story before but it doesn't surprise me. Of course I've heard a lot of good things about JYD too. The boys certainly liked him outside the ring.

Here's a quick take I found online from Meltzer's excellent obit on JYD:

Still, business was still strong, largely because Watts had replenished his ranks with some strong undercard performers who carried the wrestling end of the show. But the weekly Monday night shows at the Downtown Municipal Auditorium were badly damaged when Mr. Wrestling II scored a three count on JYD to win the North American title on March 12, 1984 in a match with the mask against JYD leaving town using a loaded kneelift that actually missed badly and that Dog sold in a manner making it look that much worse. Suddenly, before their eyes, people started to think that their hero JYD had taken a dive on them, or perhaps maybe pro wrestling really was b.s. But the rest of the circuit remained strong, as did the big Superdome shows.

Interesting to look at the comments on this video. At 3:00 of the video, they stop and never show it.

The match was taped, but the botched spot was never shown. Did it "kill" New Orleans? A month later, they nearly set a money record at the Superdome with "The Last Stampede". JYD was God in NOLA. His leaving for New York was what killed the town.

Jim Cornette has talked about it and he said that was not the only business exposing incident with JYD in Mid South. another was a match that aired on tv. It was The Midnight Express vs JYD and Jim Duggan and i think its JYDS last televised match in Mid South. August 1984 I think. Cornette and the Express throw powder at JYD which was supposed to hit him in the face but it does not go into JYDs face. get this....JYD crawls over to the powder in the ring and lays in it and rubs his face into it. its pretty bad.lol

I would like to see some of these matches if links are available. JYD was one of my least favorite wrestler to watch. So damn boring.

The Brazilian national soccer team is interested in learning more about this "JYD" character.

In the YouTube video that doesn't seem so bad.  The poor quality of the footage might help, and it looks like there might be an edit or a jump.  But it seems like JYD gets hit at least with a little powder and then you could make the case that he was disoriented and crawled into the powder more.  JYD was pretty horrible though.

Yeah, that video is interesting.  I almost put blame on Cornette for the shitty powder throw.  It seems they were not close enough to the ropes.  Still, it seems like with powder throws and throwing fireballs, southern territories generally bat about .500 in getting it right.

Universal Wrestling is still selling it here:

I swear I have the House Show VHS but can't find it and may just buy it before it gets lost forever.

Longtime lurker. After some difficulty, I finally managed to register. The match is available on the DVDVR Best of Mid-South 80's set. Not sure how to embed the video properly, so I'll just post the link.

I skipped to the last couple of minutes and I don’t see anything terrible other than the ref being too involved but that may be more of a personal preference thing.
