AEW/TNT Press Release:

July 24, 2019 – WarnerMedia announced today that the new professional wrestling league All Elite Wrestling (AEW) will begin airing its two-hour weekly matches on TNT on Wednesday, Oct. 2, from 8 p.m. ET to 10 p.m. ET. The highly-anticipated, action-packed matches will take place in different cities across the nation each week on Wednesdays, starting in Washington, D.C., at the famed Capital One Arena. Ticket pricing and on-sale date for the televised live event will be announced on Monday, July 29, at 12 p.m. ET via AEW’s social media platforms.

AEW features a world-class roster of diverse male and female wrestlers, giving fans a new wrestling experience for the first time in 20 years. Founded by President and CEO Tony Khan, AEW is headlined by Cody & Brandi Rhodes, The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson), Kenny Omega, Hangman Adam Page, Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley. The roster is also filled with incredibly skilled competitors including Nyla Rose, Awesome Kong, Dustin Rhodes, Jungle Boy, Dr. Britt Baker, MJF and SCU. In addition to being in-ring talent, Cody, The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega also serve as EVPs with Brandi Rhodes serving as Chief Brand Officer. Renowned commentator Jim Ross has also joined the league.

Focused on fast-paced, high-impact competitions, AEW offers fans more athleticism along with real sports analytics. Wrestlers are also given freedom to explore their characters and highlight their athletic abilities. Introducing statistics to wrestling for the first time ever, AEW will raise the stakes for its matches and deepen fan engagement by tracking each competitor’s wins and losses as wrestlers pursue championships. Their moves and damage to their opponents will also be analyzed on-air to provide insights into their winning streaks.

WarnerMedia has been offering fans exclusive access to AEW’s previous matches that kicked off in May. Their extremely popular events DOUBLE OR NOTHING, FYTER FEST and FIGHT FOR THE FALLEN were all streamed on B/R Live. The highly anticipated ALL OUT event in Chicago on Saturday, Aug. 31, will also stream on the platform. B/R Live’s high fan engagement provides an invaluable opportunity to build AEW’s audience and maximize its viewership

Capital One arena in Washington is a 20, 000 seater for hockey and basketball. Interesting.

With their staging and gimmicks, I would guess between 12,000-16,000 tickets will be put on sale. Still seems like too large of an arena for a weekly TV show, but I guess they want to kick off the inaugural show on TNT with a big bang, no pun intended.

There was some online hype, pretty sure there was even a petition, a few months ago where fans were wanting the first match on TNT to feature Jushin Liger vs. Brian Pillman Jr. to mimick Nitro's first ever match. It would of been kind of cool, but not good business since I don't believe AEW has plans for either guy.

I hope that match happens somewhere as part of Liger’s retirement tour, but to want AEW to immediately douse itself with the stench of WCW is beyond stupid. Not to mention the fact that you don’t launch a hot new company with an old guy 3 months away from retirement. No one gives a fuck about Nitro’s first match except 6 smarks.  Everyone else just remembers Nitro sucked, or aren’t old enough to remember it at all. What a dumb idea.

I would also like to see Liger vs. Pillman Jr. before he retires. I also agree with you for the most part that the stench of WCW is not what AEW needs. That being said, the Liger-Pillman match would be looked at as nostalgia, and RAW's rating last week proved again that nostalgia draws tv ratings. Just saying.

Because of the stage set, there are some significant seat kills in DC, but it still looks like it's set up for a capacity in the 13,000 range. I've been an AEW skeptic, but this fast sellout at that capacity is impressive. Currently about 15% of all tickets sold are on StubHub, assuming I've estimated the capacity correctly, with a current get in price of $27.50.

AEW Stays Hot, Sells Out TNT Shows In Boston And Philadelphia

AEW's streak of overachieving momentum continued as its next to AEW on TNT showcases in Boston and Philadelphia sold out just over an hour after tickets went on sale at 12 p.m. EST.

AEW on TNT will air in Boston on Wednesday, October 9 in the Agganis Arena, which has a capacity of 7,200, and on October 16 in Philadelphia's Liacouras Center, which carries a capacity of 10,200.

After scheduling its major shows on the west coast for AEW Double or Nothing (Las Vegas), its home base of Florida for Fight for the Fallen (Jacksonville) and Fyter Fest (Daytona Beach) and the midwest for All Out (Chicago), AEW has leaned exclusively on the northeast for its early run of television tapings.

Tickets for AEW On TNT's premiere sold out within hours for its Washington D.C. debut on October 2, while AEW targeted the traditionally hot wrestling markets of Boston and Philadelphia for its next two offerings. The strategy is wise from the standpoint that not only is AEW targeting strong wrestling markets, but the east coast cities in question are known to turn out some of the hotter crowds in pro wrestling. This will give the upstart promotion the ability to launch its first month of television shows in front of more engaged and motivated fanbases thereby facilitating a much better television product.

The back-and-forth between AEW and WWE has only escalated since its last sellout around this time last month. During WWE's 2Q 2019 earnings call, Vince McMahon casually dismissed AEW as "blood and guts," noting their brand of decided violence was nothing more than "gory crap that we graduated from." In his veiled criticism of AEW's more edgy product, McMahon made sure to note that he does not see TNT tolerating this content, a comment seemingly designed to scare off potential advertisers as the Chairman willingly engages in dirty pool.

Cody Rhodes, AEW's unofficial clap-back spokesperson, was sure to respond with one of his garden-variety rah rah speeches in a recent video.

"Every man or woman who ever stepped foot in the ring regardless of race, color, creed, political affiliation, sexual identity has felt blood and guts and passion," said William Wallace Rhodes.

"Because if we don’t care, they don’t care. So if you say we’re blood and guts, I say you bet your ass we’re blood and guts.”

Rhodes' motivational speech was reminiscent of his response to Triple H calling AEW a "pissant" company at the WWE Hall of Fame earlier this year.

The budding wrestling war has also manifested itself through counter programming, most notably WWE airing EVOLVE 131 on the WWE Network during AEW Fight for the Fallen. The move drew tweet-and-delete criticism (the most intense kind of criticism) from Kenny Omega, who took exception to WWE's attempts to undermine a charity show that raised $150,000 for victims of gun violence.

WWE will also air NXT TakeOver: Cardiff opposite AEW All Out on August 31, while rumors of NXT moving to Wednesday nights on FS1—pitting them head-to-head against AEW on TNT—are so prominent they've become regular topics of discussion during Triple H's media conference calls.

Tensions between the two promotions can also be seen and heard in interviews with prominent WWE Superstars. WWE Universal champion Seth Rollins has aggressively vowed to "knock [AEW] dead," while top star Roman Reigns considered it "generous" to refer to the national promotion as competition.

With AEW set to air on television starting in October, shots continue to be fired and it's only mid-August.

Welcome to the jungle.

Not one post on All Out? What did people think of the show? I thought it was fine but nothing too spectacular. The consensus seems to be that NXT UK Takeover was better. AEW is also taking some heat for putting the title on Jericho, although I thought that was the obvious move.

Anyone who thinks that belt should have been on anyone OTHER than Jericho doesn't know the sport and doesn't understand how important television is to AEW. He was the ONLY person to put the belt on the first time..
