For some reason I was surprised by this.

PWInsider:

For those who have asked about the women's tag team bout that opened Smackdown, the talents did not keep wrestling during the commercial break.

Without the crowd it just wasn't the same

I think they fucked up. They could have done something with the unique situation, but they didn't. The Triple H commentary was a good attempt to save it, but throwing in a 30 minute match from EC was just giving up. Hopefully they have some better ideas for Raw. It was a good idea to have Cesaro vs Bryan because they couldn't have a bad match if they tried. In Bryan's book he wrote about a time in ROH when he wanted to go LONG. A 90 min draw, I think, might even have been longer. He thought it would be a good hook for DVD sales, but he knew even an ROH crowd would get restless. They tried to persuade fans not to start, but they did, and they called an audible and shortened the match. I don't remember the exact match. They should try that soon. I think you could get the buzz of people telling their friends to turn on the TV if a match went super long.

I don’t understand why they can’t have 50 people all sitting on the hard cam side, even if they’re employees like in the days of Primetime, and run a studio-style show. It would work fine, but Vince no longer knows how to do anything other than what he did last week. Once upon a time, he could turn on a dime. Aside from matches with no cried reaction, some of those promos and run-ins just don’t work in this environment, especially the Cena-Wyatt thing.

The other problem is that you have talent you don’t know how to NOT play to the last row anymore and take it down a fucking notch. Except Bryan who did just that and made a joke out of Gulak trying to get “Yes” chants with Bryan looking at him like he was nuts. But then in Bryan’s match, he went back to indy mode, and I’m not even talking about wrestling style, I’m talking about just playing to the camera instead of a large crowd. Compare that to Bayley, who was totally lost without 15,000 people to play off of. This is what happens when you learn Vince’s way of doing things but don’t actually learn the fundamentals of what this business is about, or common sense for that matter.

I also like how WWE never once acknowledged why they were performing in front of zero fans. They Benoit’ed Coronavirus.

About to watch 205 Live. This show can’t catch a break. They built up this big 10-man match for weeks, the only thing they’ve built up in ages on this show, and now it’ll happen in an empty arena.

I would think that there is a two sided reason to not have fans there:  First, they probably only used the talent that they used based on something like they either passed a corona test or were never in an at risk area.  Second, and more likely, they didn’t want to open the gates to lawsuits if one of the wrestlers actually had it and a fan or tons of fans then caught it.  It is their way of keeping it “in house”.  And I agree with 99% of your post but I thought the Cena/Wyatt stuff was good.  Because I think if they had a live crowd, Wyatt never shows his face - it’s a video on the big screen.  Bray isn’t going face to face these days with this gimmick.
Daniel Bryan looked like a million bucks last night because he is one of the few there that knows what it’s like to perform in front of 20 people.  Like you said, full Indy mode where you make sure to know where the camera is at all times instead of pandering to the crowd.  And yeah, Bayley sucked, and I think Asuka’s dancing on the ramp was ridiculous too.  And why on earth wasn’t there an extended brawl through “the crowd”.  How cool would that be, have a match in the ring and say Braun comes out and chases Zayn through the seats, getting intercepted by Shinsuke - and as they work their way around, some random guy or girl is just sitting in a seat watching the matches.  I mean, there are a good 50 talents in NXT that could have been used just to be “the” face in the crowd.

To clarify I don’t mean open the gates to fans, although I hardly think it would be the end of the world since plenty of smaller venues are still open. I was thinking more along the lines of having WWE staff in the seats, like how the staff made up the audiences for Colbert, Maher, and the other late night talk show hosts. They still reacted and laughed (even though they were the ones who wrote the jokes). It’s better than complete silence.

I also think they should’ve brought everyone down to Florida this week to tape the next 4 weeks worth of Raws and Smackdowns. Who’s going to leak the spoilers?  Then let the talent go home and be with their families for a while and rest. This isn’t going away for a while. And writing a bunch of TV all at once like in the good old days of syndication and not having last minute changes every week might make the product more coherent too. And if you don’t know where all the angles should go, you can always just give us some good fucking wrestling. Give me Bryan/Gulak vs. Nakamura/Cesaro in 30-45 minute matches 3 weeks in a row and you’ve just written half of Smackdown for the entire period. I’ll take it!

In some international broadcasts, they didn't cut to commercial here and this was broadcast live. I think this is from Australia. Every source of this is from this same video, though, which makes me slightly skeptical.

The business has finally been exposed once and for all. I always suspected it may be fake but now my heart is breaking. I want to get into a bunker with Jim Cornette so we can shoot each other and just end it all. I blame Kenny Omega for this.

Meltzer is reporting that HHH was supposed to be the first of many guest commentators on SD!, and this was in fact announced by Cole at the top of the show. But the Twitter caught fire and loved him so much, so he was told to go back out there for the next segment, something that even Michael Cole was genuinely surprised by. HHH may now be doing this regularly until the crisis is over, but the response was very positive.
