Was it true that no one wanted to job to Garvin since they knew he was just a placeholder champ, or is that more Scott Keith bs?  I remember thinking at the time that it was pretty weak that he never seemed to defend the title until the match where Flair won it back.

Why give him the belt if he's not going to defend it a few times?

Ronnie should be thankful he got a whole month with the belt, Dusty only booked himself as champ for a week.

And that was 6 days too long.

Contrary to unpopular opinionm, I was a Pre & Post NWA World Champion Ron Garvin fan. I remember watching the 30+ minute match when he won the title. They really sold it like a PPV. And when Tommy Young made the 3 count, my brother and I went nuts like we were there in the building. I remember all the wrestlers rushing the cage, his speech. "This is better than making babies or winning a million dollars".  I loved the fact he won the title and in great match/fantastic finish.

I did'nt have ppv yet but heared or saw he lost to Flair and Starcade 87. My mouth dropped open and in shock/upset. But what's done was done. Plus hated the few matches he did have, the Tully Blanchard match where the Road Warriors saved him from a Horsemen attack was horrible.

I put it basically Ive always been a Ron Garvin fan. Loved to meet him. I have thhe magazine and PWI center of him with the title and get it autographed. Loved his knock out punch, Garvin stomp. Many memories of him.

Convoy,

Your post reminded me of a great TV match that Garvin had against Tully.  It was strange because, if my memory is correct, it was the only time Crockett had only 1 match on their TV show.  Both guys were great.  I think Tully won in the end with a foreign object.  Again, my memory may be wrong.  Still, I don't think that highly of Garvin.

David Crockett: (after the three count)

"He'd, he did it, he dit it! Ron Garvin! Ron Gavin has just won the world heavyweight championship. Ron Garvin the new world heavyweight champion!"

That was one of the most memorable moments in wrestling history for me. Remember I started with the NWA before I was a major Tito Santana fan. I'm surprised he was an unpopular champion if not wrestler.

Lots of good points here in this thread, and while I did like Ronnie Garvin, personally I found his (brief) tagging with Jimmy in the old International Wrestling (Montreal) days to be what I found the best of his career.

I would have to agree though, that Ronnie should be happy to have had (even) the short title reign he had.  Flair really put him over huge when you look at it,  but should he (Flair) have elevated Windham for a future top spot - I think so.

How many title defenses did Kerry Von Erich have compared to Ron Garvin? I realize Von Erich only had it about 3 weeks.

Why so many non-titles?  That just makes him look even more weak.

That whole Starrcade'87 card was a mess. My points are...

- Opening six-man tag was meaningless

- ANOTHER Midnight Express v. Rock'n Roll Express match? And on a scaffold?

- Barry Windham v. Steve Williams in a face v. face match for the UWF Title. Williams retains and the title goes away...

- Dusty Rhodes beats Lex Luger to win the US Title in the first of second cage matches of the night. WTF? Was the cage there so Dusty had the excuse to juice?

- Ric Flair beats lame-duck champion Ronnie Garvin, in a steel cage, to regain the World Championship. Did anyone think Garvin had a chance in Hell beating Flair???

- The biggest 'crime' was The Road Warriors/Arn and Tully match, where it's friggin' CHICAGO and LOD couldn't even go over in their 'hometown' to win the straps!

The only match that made sense was Terry Taylor v. Nikita Koloff in the unification of the UWF/NWA TV Titles.

But, going back to the topic at hand, I think having Garvin being a TV or US Champion would have made more sense then having him as a World Champion.

If thoe bouts were already scheduled before Kerry won the title, they would probably revert to non-title matches right there, as they were not booked as title matches.

I seem to recall that being used a lot in some areas after a title change...built up the challenger getting the win for the title rematches.

i thought that the new champ took over the old champs schedule and defended the title against the next scheduled opponent and so on.
