A buddy of mine recently watched "The Wrestler", and asked me who I thought the real life equivalent of Randy "The Ram" Robinson was.  I know Jerry Lynn has laid claim to being the real life Ram, but I don’t think Lynn ever peaked as highly as Robinson was meant to have in the movie, so I don’t buy into his claim.  (Remember, the wrestling posters at the beginning of the film implied he was a main eventer in the ‘80’s in a card the equivalent of WrestleMania.) At the film’s present moment, Robinson is a total has been, wrestling as much because he can’t let go as he is because he needs the money.

So, after some deliberation, I narrowed my picks down to three guys (none of whom I’m convinced are a perfect fit); coincidentally, these three guys all appeared in one of the semi-Main Events of Wrestlemania II.

Greg Valentine-This is a guy who, almost forty years after his debut, is still making appearances.  He Main Evented not only WM II, but the original Starcade as well (co-main event status).  His inclusion is based mainly on footage I saw of him appearing at a backyard wrestling event, looking exactly the same as he did in 1986.  I’m not sure of what his financial situation is, but I can’t imagine it’s great.
Dynamite Kid-This is a guy who didn’t walk away soon enough and definitely didn't plan ahead.  A guy whose style essentially crippled him and, similar to The Ram, a guy whose drug abuse may have contributed to health woes.  I don’t think he’s doing too well financially, and I’m under the impression he’s alienated himself from virtually everybody in wrestling.
Brutus Beefcake-This is a guy who I consider the front runner.  He main evented at no less than two WrestleMania’s, and a few years afterwards, was working Elks lodges in Podunk, USA.  A few years after that, he was creating anthrax scares in Boston MBTA stations.  I have no idea what he’s doing now, but I think the final days of his career paralleled The Ram’s the most closely.

So that’s what I came up with, but I suspect you guys will have better examples.  What do you think?

I'll go under the radar and pick one that nobody else will even think of:  Ricky Morton.

Tons of similarities.

Yeah, you're right, that's a great one.  I knew you guys would do better than me.

A couple of years from now, it may be Hogan.

Morton is the best choice i've heard of so far, plus he still has a mullet.

Valentine i think wrestles because he probably has nothing else better to do.

He and Flair were my honorable mentions.  What bumped them from consideration was that they are too iconic.  I couldn't envision either Hogan or Flair working a deli counter, only to be approached by a customer who says, "Don't I know you from somewhere?" I would imagine the customer would know who they were almost instantly.

I thought it was loosely based on Jake Roberts.

The first name I thought of was Greg Valentine, but thinking about it I don't believe he's a match. I don't think he's ever really screwed up his life. He's there because he's Greg Valentine and doesn't have anything better to do.

Tully Blanchard.

I know there are worse things in pro wrestling life than main eventing before 125 folks in a Valdosta, GA, conference center. But boy howdy was he a long way from where he once was.

Seeing Dennis Condrey in an early match might qualify for something as well, though Condrey was never much in a main event position.

Beefcake managed to mess up his life despite having Hulk Hogan as a close friend so that may be bonus points.

A few more Possibilities:
Tony Atlas
King Kong Bundy
Jake Roberts

Saw the DVD this weekend. Depressing as hell, but I liked it.

That is really sad to hear about Greg Valentine, who is one of the most talented guys I've ever watched wrestle in my lifetime.

I think the director has said on the record more than once that Randy the Ram was created as a blend of Jake Roberts and Terry Funk as they were shown in Beyond the Mat.

The "keeps messing up his relationship with his daughter" storyline was taken almost verbatim from Jake's portion of that film.

I don't think Beefcake ever worked in the main event of any WrestleMania.

When I first saw it I was thinking Jake Roberts. With the drug use and his daughter.

WMII, technincally one of the 3 main events.  Didn't he do a program teaming with Hogan as well?
