You've got the Grateful Dead listed twice.

As far as the "needs to be convinced" list, I would argue for Soundgarden and The Stooges.

I argue for both because they were both so original and ahead of their time.  Plus, unlike a bank like, say, Triumph, their music is still very listenable today and doesn't seem dated at all.  For extra bonus cred, both bands had crossover appeal as witnessed by Chris Cornell in "Singles" and The Stooges obsession shared by most of the main characters in "Trainspotting".

That's my take.

Some others to consider:

Bee Gees
Guns & Roses
Boston
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Bon Jovi
Foreigner
Jethro Tull
Journey
Judas Priest

Apologies if any of these have been mentioned and discounted as possibilities or if some of them are so fully you giggle uncontrollably and injure yourself.

The Dave Clark Five were the second band of the British Invasion to hit America and had 9 Top 10 hits, including knocking The Beatles out of the top spot when they first hit.  They were inducted into the R'n'R HOF a few years back.

I don't know a  whole lot about The Stooges but mentioned them because they're widely considered one of the most influential punk bands of all-time and it would be nice to have some diversity instead of a lot of bands that sound the same.
