The seedings already done are based on last year's tournament. You weren't here then. If you want to take a look at the tourney from last year, it starts on page 12 of this forum.

Oh, gotcha.

I will check that out later after I wake up tonight... it could help me by seeing which bands bombed last year in convincing others to help put my suggestions/seconds in the field.

Hey Jude Bracket
1 The Beatles

7 R.E.M.
8 Nirvana
9 Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young

Any bands seeded from 13 to 16 are on the bubble bands. That means I've really not sold on them. As always, I'll listen to what everyone has to say and will make changes. I did these seedings rather quickly and other than the top 4 seeds in each bracket, my personal taste is reflected. Your mileage may vary.

My take...

Overseeded:  Bad Company, Supertramp, Genesis, Yes

Underseeded:  Motorhead, Judas Priest, Journey, Red Hot Chili Peppers

Should be Out:  Traffic, Foreigner, Rainbow, Guess Who

Should be In:  Soundgarden, The Stooges, Alice in Chains

Bad Company is seeded right. Yes and Genesis could be moved down. Motorhead is a on the bubble band to me. Not sold on them at all. I like Ace of Spades. That's about it for Motorhead. However my musical tastes changed in the early 80s. I went from a Classic Rock like some Heavy Metal guy to more of a Punk/new wave/club band guy. For that reason, I don't get much of the 80s/90s Rock Bands. Bon Jovi for instance. Poison would be another one.

Some other bands for consideration.

Chicago- Before Terry Kath died, they were really good. After, uh not so much.

REO Speedwagon- The You Get what You Play For Live Album is great. The other stuff they did in studio couldn't touch that Live album.

Cheap Trick

The Cars

The Police

Paul McCartney & Wings

The B52s

Talking Heads

Elvis Costello and The Attractions

The Band

The Stray Cats

The Pretenders

I agree that The Police, The Talking Heads, and the Pretenders need to be slotted in there as well. Somebody mentioned Blondie earlier...that would be a good pick too. I loved the B52's in high school, but I don't think that's enough to be in a greatest rock band tourney. The rest that you mentioned can stay out as far as I'm concerned.

When I look at these seedings, I'm not only considering my own personal tastes, but I'm also considering other factors like longevity, originality and influence. I'm not the biggest Motorhead fan for example, but I recognize their place in the annals of Rock history, and that's why I said they were underseeded. Same goes for Priest, the Stooges and Soundgarden.

As far as the RHCP's go, whether you like them or not, they were undoubtedly one of a kind and brought about a whole new style of music. I mean really, who can you compare to the RHCP's? Nobody. Plus, "Mother's Milk" and "Blood Sugar..." are five star classics.

On the flip side, I think of bands like Bad Company--who was good, but not great--and just really didn't have the staying power. That's why I say they're overseeded.

Then there's bands like Foreigner. In a tourney like this, if I'm looking up and down the list, I'd like to think that for every band named, it's realistic to picture somebody saying, "You know who my all-time favorite band is? Band XYZ, that's who!" I can't picture anybody saying that about Foreigner. Not one.

Since we are counting even Heavy Metal in this contest I still say Iron Maiden and Slayer have to be in. Jethro Tull shouldn't be in there and I'm not sure who the other one I would take out is yet.

If there are a certain number of slots open(we could just keep naming bands non stop pretty much that have some kind of influence on rock) take all of those and put them in a poll and have a vote off.

Whichever bands get the highest numbers of votes are in.

And how about a special wildcard slot for my hometown boys the Crash Test Dummies and Mitch Dorge who I went to school with. :D

The Pretenders

I'd take all of the above.

I notice we don't have any bands mainly fronted by the "sans penis" crowd.

Maybe a separate mini tournament for the likes of

Heart
Joan Jett & The Blackhearts
No Doubt
The Cranberries
Martha Davis and the Motels
The Runaways
The Bangles
The Go Go's
The Pretenders

Keep this debate going over the weekend. I'll start making changes Monday. What will probably happen is 8 bands in and 8 bands out of the tourney. Then I'll reshuffle some seeds.

let me make the case for 2 of the BEST bands I ever saw live in concert

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band

J Geils Band

I have no problem dropping the Yardbirds for either and come on UFO and Rainbow are footnotes in rock n roll compared to Bob Seger

I can't believe I forgot Maiden but they would certainly belong before UFO.  That's not even close.  I like UFO and I'll finally be seeing them live for the first time at B.B. King's in May, but they just don't compare.
