In shock to nobody, Lawrence Frank fired in Detroit
Kurt Helin Apr 18, 2013, 2:28 PM EDT

I officially got off the “Lawrence Frank knows how to build a team” train earlier this season, when Andre Drummond was showing real promise but was being held back so Jason Maxiell could get more minutes. Despite what owner Tom Gores thought, this was not a playoff team, it was a team that needed to take its lumps and learn.

The Pistons are off the Lawrence Frank train as well, or maybe more accurately he was tossed from the Pistons’ train.

As had been expected, the Pistons fired Frank on Thursday, reports Marc Stein at ESPN.

A meeting Thursday with Pistons owner Tom Gores finally confirmed Frank’s ouster, after Gores offered very tepid public support of his coach when speaking to local reporters earlier this week. Frank was believed to be largely Gores’ choice to replace John Kuester in the summer of 2011, although NBA coaching sources maintain that Pistons president Joe Dumars preferred current Knicks coach Mike Woodson for the job.

The Pistons will confirm this later in the day. Wherever Frank is next season he will still get the $3.7 million the Pistons owe him in salary.

Frank looked like a guy trying to assert some control and save face when he told Gores recently that the team needed to pick up the option year on his contract or not bring him back. Everyone knew this day was coming.

The question is what direction the Pistons go now. For a young team a young coach coming up — Brian Shaw out of Indiana, for example — would be a good fit. But we’ll see what direction an owner who expects to make the playoffs next season chooses to go.

Mike Dunlap fired as Bobcats coach after one season
Kurt Helin Apr 23, 2013, 2:19 PM EDT

The Charlotte Bobcats were not going to win a lot of games this season if Red Auerbach and John Wooden rose from the dead to co-coach the team. There just wasn’t enough talent.

But Mike Dunlap in his one year could not seem to reach what players he did have to the satisfaction of ownership and the team has fired him after one season, it announced Tuesday.

“Rich Cho and I conducted our season-ending review and met with coach Dunlap to reflect on this season. As an organization, it was decided that we needed to make a change with the head coach position,” president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said in a released statement. “We want to thank Mike for his contribution and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Dunlap was an off-the-radar hire, he had been an assistant at St. John’s University the season before. It was hoped he would connect with the young players, but that didn’t pan out.

The Bobcats went 21-61 last season, the second worst record in the NBA. Remember they got off to a fast 7-5 start, but after that fell apart. While it was a mess, at least that was an improvement over 2012, when they won seven of 66 games, the lowest winning percentage in NBA history (.106).

As for replacements, again look for the Bobcats to go with a young coach. You may think working for Michael Jordan is a draw, but for a coach with options the things that are draws are franchises willing to pay top dollar (the Bobcats are small market and not big spenders) and those with a lot of young talent (strike two for Charlotte). Stan Van Gundy isn’t walking through that door. What they do have are some nice young players (Michael Kidd-Gilchrist for one), more than $20 million in cap space and another top 5 draft pick this year. Charlotte is a multi-year rebuilding project and the Bobcats are better off with a young coach who seems to connect with his players even while they struggle. Jacque Vaughn did that in Orlando, for example — they only won 20 games but that team played hard for Vaughn.

Khawk was the only one to pick Dunlap and Mike was his 5 point picks. 6 points for the Thunder Bay dude.

A couple of NHL firings:

- Colorado fired Head Coach Joe Sacco ( I had him for 3 points )

- Dallas fired GM Joe Nieuwendyk ( I don't think anybody had him on their list )

Just to be official.

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/2013/04/28/avalanche-fire-joe-sacco/

Avalanche fire Joe Sacco
Joe Yerdon Apr 28, 2013, 1:41 PM EDT

Joe Sacco’s run as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche is over.

The team announced they’ve relieved Sacco of his head coaching duties after four years on the job and after yet another disappointing season, the writing was on the wall.

In his tenure as the Avs bench boss, Sacco took the team to the postseason just once during his first season on the job in 2009-10 as the team piled up 95 points in the standings and lost to San Jose in six games in the first round.

Since then it’s been nothing but mediocrity as they’ve missed the playoffs in three straight seasons. The Avs have put up the second-worst record in the league in two of those years.

Sacco’s record in Colorado tops out at 130-134-14 and now he’ll head to Finland and Sweden to coach Team USA in the World Championships. The Avalanche have not announced a replacement as of yet and Sacco may not be the only one out the door as GM Greg Sherman could soon follow.

Official: Stars fire GM Joe Nieuwendyk
Joe Yerdon Apr 28, 2013, 11:17 AM EDT

What was just a report last night is now official.

The Dallas Stars have fired Joe Nieuwendyk as the team’s general manager after four years in the role. It’s believed Detroit Red Wings assistant GM Jim Nill will be hired to fill the position. Nieuwendyk’s contract with the Stars was set to expire after next season.

Nieuwendyk was hired in May of 2009 and while he’s made some shrewd moves during his tenure, he’ll likely be remembered by NHL fans as the guy who lost out on a pair of deals with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The trade that sent James Neal and Matt Niskanen to the Pens for Alex Goligoski now lives in infamy after Neal became a monster goal scorer alongside Evgeni Malkin while Niskanen emerged as one of their more consistent defenders. Goligoski has done well in Dallas, but the others’ performances turned the deal into a lopsided one.

Brenden Morrow‘s performance in Pittsburgh this season is also not helping Nieuwendyk’s image as an executive while helping Pens GM Ray Shero look like a wizard.

Now it’ll likely be up to Nill to figure out how best to surround guys like Jamie Benn in Texas.

On Monday, the Raptors will decide the fate of
Bryan Coangelo. The local media seems to think he
won't have his contract extended.
If he's fired, chances are the coach will also be fired
when the new GM comes in.

I was much happier with my 6 points before you pointed this out.
