This is the highest profile test for the concept of the "opener" yet.  You have the Yankees ace who looked like he might win the Cy Young the first half of the season (although he fell off the second half) against a motley crew of middle relievers who will go 1-2 innings each in trying to piece this together.  I really don't know how this strategy will work in a postseason atmosphere, but I don't think it will go well.

Yankees - 9, A's - 5

It didn't go well at all and in a copycat league it might have made many teams think twice about using an opener, especially in high-pressure games.  None of the A's pitchers looked comfortable, and just as they started to settle in they were replaced by another pitcher who came in with jitters.  It was actually a disaster.

This isn’t/wasn’t the true concept of an opener though.  The idea is to bring in a reliever who has a chance of success against the top of the order and then follow that with the starter.  Instead of the starter perhaps seeing the top of the order (best hitters) three times, he would only see them twice.  The Rays using Sergio Romo (RHP) against the Angels (Kinsler, Trout, Pujols) is a perfect example of this.  Then you bring in the stud starter.
