Just brutal stuff.  Vader was so good in this role as a guy who brutalized and squashed even established stars, and of course no one took a beating better than Cactus.  But watching this is like watching hockey before mandated helmets and wondering what everyone was thinking.  Not to sound like Bret Hart here, but for a sport that's supposed to be fake, I'm not sure what the point is in killing someone for real.  It's amazing that Foley can still string 3 sentences together.

On this topic, I've never seen it again, but I distinctly remember a TV match with Vader vs. Steamboat in the main event.  On paper that's a bit of a dream match for the era and should've surpassed the excellent Vader vs. Sting series.  But Vader was just steamrolling everyone at the time and they had him destroy Steamboat in a complete squash.  Steamboat couldn't do anything against him.  He didn't take as much of a beating as Cactus did because he probably wasn't that dumb, but Vader stiffed the shit out of him with forearms, threw him around like a ragdoll, sold nothing, and pinned him.  It has to be the most one-sided loss of Steamboat's career, even including his awful WWF return as "The Dragon".  That match has stayed with me all these years because I just couldn't believe they booked it that way.

Was steamboat injured going into that match with Vader or did him come out injured or am I thinking of something else?

Don't remember any injury either way but I could be wrong.

Cactus was huge here - to the point that Vader had a big struggle to get him up for the spot. People have used this spot as a benchmark for years, and I was watching when it happened in disbelief. But all these years later, watching it again, Vader really did his best to protect Cactus with this spot. He didn't "powerbomb" him, as much as he just dropped him off his shoulder and let momentum take over. For as bad of a spot as that was, it was handled in the best possible way.

One more thing, I don't think this spot was too much worse than Cactus doing the cannonball run off the apron. In this match he flipped onto the floor instead of the elbow drop after Vader moved - and all the momentum that he picked up (mat or not) made his landing much harder.

They did the move again and Foley was offended that Heenan played it off with a joke.

After watching it over and over again, I agree that Vader definitely did what he had to do to protect Mick, though I guess the loud "thud" doesn't help in lessening the fact that it was still brutal. Man, Mick is really one tough guy.
