Calm down Bob. They will make you another one. I half expected to hear "why me, why anyone". I hated Backlund as the champ. Liked the heel version a thousand times more. Technically Star was right - it was his belt. However, I also liked he roided version of Superstar, not the martial arts version. Not my favorite angle.

Just to add to this: Here's the whole episode that featured the Graham/Belt scene

Love the angle.

Graham, frustrated, been a way for years, if I can't have it you can't either. Bad acting by Backlund and I can't help b ut think the belt was way harder to tear up than what Graham was thinking.

This angle could have come off much better....

1) Graham didn't destroy the belt nearly enough. He was obviously struggling just to rip the main plate off
2) Backlund sounded like a whiny Nancy Kerrigan (Why??!!!...Why??!!!....) instead of a heavyweight champion.
3) I don't remember there being a big blowoff to this angle (unlike the Patterson-Slaughter, Snuka-Muraco, Snuka-Backlund angles)

The beginning of the end for Backlund. Like Big Garea Fan pointed out, he came off like a little sissy pants. Way over the top and not the way a heavyweight champion should have acted in those days. The angle itself? Pure entertainment and fantastic TV. The replacement belt was in my top three favorite WW(W)F(E) heavyweight championship belts along with the original Bruno one which got stolen and Bret's belt with the eagle.

I'm with you, Wong Lee, Big Green is my favorite WWF belt of all time.  I've heard lots of people say this dislike it but I thought it was an impressively sized belt with a nice bit of history on the side plates.

As for the angle, I agree that this can reasonably be pointed to as the beginning of the end for Backlund.  Why was he made to worry so much about a damn piece of leather?  Face champions should be generally stoic and determined, not disconsolate sobbers.

1) I think it was a Graham shoot interview I saw where he talked about having so much trouble destroying the belt properly, so obviously some gimmicking of it should have been done and I am surprised nobody thought of that since it's construct you would think would have been pretty sturdy given it's newness
2) Bob never interviewed or acted very well so him coming across as he did was almost to be expected.
3) They did have a three match series at MSG, one of which Bob bloodied Graham badly (the first bout probably), and Bob ended up submitting Graham to the Chicken Wing in bout three as I recall. I don't remember if that third bout had a specialty stip to it off the top of my head. Lumberjacks, maybe?

Backlund was awful there, but he always was awful.  All his promos for years were just mumbling while looking at his shoes, and he whined and cried all the time.  I think we're judging this angle by 2017 standards.  Backlund somehow was still over despite all that and I don't think this hurt him.

I hated it when it happened. I never like Backlund when he was a face and I really didn't like this version of Superstar. Never know what Vince Sr. saw in Backlund.

Whatever your opinion of Backlund, there's no denying that Sr. made a shit ton of scratch off him.

I wonder if he would've made more with someone else.  The WWWF was a machine, much as it is today.  It's hard to completely tank that.  Anyone who gets pushed to that level is going to be successful as part of the machine, but I feel like money was left on the table by going to Backlund much as it was going to Cena.  Certainly a face turn and longer SSBG run would've made Vince Sr. more.  I have no doubt about that.

But all we have is speculation.  The facts are that Backlund drew money for years.  Realistically, how much more money could SSBG have drawn during that same time period?  There wasn't that much room for improvement and as a business owner, all things being equal, I'm more apt to get behind someone like Backlund than Wayne Coleman.
