I liked the angle well enough but the follow up with Backlund helping Eddie rehab was extremely gay-looking.

I wish Superstar had beaten Backlund and I would love to see their November MSG match which has never surfaced.

Eddie had already started using alternatives to the flat back bump which in some cases made the impact more spectacular, but Gilbert was going down a rough path physically for sure.

I do not recall a Superstar-Gilbert rematch series.

As much as I liked this match, my gut feeling is the 'feud' didn't draw a dime. if there even was one.

The point was to build to Superstar-Backlund.  Gilbert was essentially a jobber at this point.  Why would that feud draw when the injury angle was only meant to piss off Backlund?  And I'm pretty sure Gilbert was let go due to drugs not long after this.  They might have done something with him down the line as an undercard never-say-die babyface, but he burnt that bridge IIRC.

I believe this injury angle was shortly after he came back from a legit injury in a car accident, right?

Correct. Even without the ingestion of massive amounts of narcotics, I don't think Vince ever would have elevated Gilbert to higher than the second coming of Rick McGraw. Come to think of it, to be the second coming of Rick McGraw would have required the ingestion of massive amounts of narcotics. DAMN YOU VINCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kinda remember Backlund and Gilbert coming back and training together with some kind of 'wheel'. Memory gets fuzzy after that.

Eddie was way too small for Vinces taste. He would have had to roid up like McGraw to stand any chance and even then. that's how Vince influenced them to enhance their bodies without coming out and telling them to.

Gilbert had a pretty strong run in terms of wins/losses during his 1.5 years with WWF. The accident in May 1983 may have started his troubles, but outwardly he still had enough upside for them to keep him in a good spot. A Japanese tour in October 1983 follows his injury angle shown here, and he returns to team with Tony Garea. Early 1984 shows Eddie start his slide down the cards, and he is back in Memphis by the end of March.

I had a small dumbbell at that time with removable weights that would roll like Backlund's wheel. I used to try that dumb exercise. God, 12 year olds can be impressionable.

Gilbert was put with Backlund on the road also as a mentor type by Vince Sr. due to Eddie's drug use. After a month or so, Backlund went to Sr. and told him that Gilbert didn't want to listen and he didn't want to be associated with him anymore. Backlund talked about it in his book.
