The next AWA taping after this Milwaukee card was at the St. Paul Civic Center. It featured the battle royal that Larry Zbyszko won to become AWA World Champion. In the lead up to the battle royal card with matches and interviews from this taping, it was clear that Muraco was being built to be either the winner and new champ or the top babyface contender to a new heel champ. It was quite surprising that he no showed the St. Paul card and never returned, because he wasn't some big name who was in for a taping. The AWA clearly had long term plans for him.

I think Larry would have won and Muraco would have been the top challenger in those scenarios. Muraco no showing even with planning indicating he would have a significant role moving forward is all the more reason to keep the title in the family, which Larry was by virtue of his marriage to Verne's daughter.
I am pretty sure Verne would have already been thinking that with all the defections and sabotage from the WWF even later in the game and the overall shrinking of the AWA's influence, scope, and schedule.

I agree, Larry Z was the only guy left who Verne could trust not to leave, and even he went to WCW before the AWA was officially dead, although by that point I'm sure he had Verne's blessing.  But IIRC, Tom Zenk wound up taking Muraco's spot, and that was pretty sad that he was the best they could do.

Zenk wasn't the worst idea right out of the gate for Zbyszko. He had some marketability and had he stuck around to offer a title challenge that lasted a few months, it would have been ok.

Tom Zenk was gone pretty quickly from the AWA after the battle royal too.

When Larry Zbyszko went to WCW, initially cohosting WCW Pro Chicago on WGN with Tony Schiavone before wrestling, it was with Verne's blessing. The AWA stopped running cards after around Labor Day 1990 except for the odd spot show. Larry couldn't make a living off of that. He still did some interviews on AWA TV and made the odd show before the AWA stopped functioning and he began a regular WCW slate in 1991.

I think there were plans to use Larry as AWA champion and it may have even been been mentioned on WCW TV.  But the AWA was still technically alive and WCW was in the midst of wrangling with the NWA over that name so Jim Herd ordered whatever footage or commentary they had erased because he was afraid of getting sued.

I very vaguely recall Larry Z being introduced as the AWA (or maybe just a former AWA) champion during one of his early appearances, and then it was never mentioned again.  They got lots of mileage talking about the feud with Bruno in the WWF though, and pushed that as his career highlight instead of his AWA run.

He always did that...the whole Legend Killer thing. He added Bockwinkel to that list with Bruno later on too.
