I loved this match, not the first time I've seen it because I know I have it from WCCW and not from Japan. I'm surprised it was an Observer Match of the Year though. But I think for it's time and considering the feud it was worth it.

Episode 153 on the network. Think it might be the only WCCW episode rated TV MA

Anyone care to fill in the storyline here? Why was Kerry the ref?

When Legends of World Class Championship Wrestling was on ESPN on weekday afternoons in the late 1980s and early 1990s, it deemed this match too bloody to be aired. It was edited out and a Gordy vs. Khan match from months earlier, before the Freebirds stepped out for their brief WWF stint, went on its place. In that one a couple of guys were having a match in the ring, Wild Bill Irwin vs. someone I think, when David Manning came to the ring and explained that Gordy and Khan were brawling in the back and that security and other wrestlers going to herd them to the ring because if they didn't do that then the planned main event between the two would probably not happen.

The idea was the Khan vs. Gordy matches were so insane that the promotion knew they were too much for regular referees David Manning, Bronko Lubich, and Rick Hazzard to handle. Kerry Von Erich was without a feud of his own because Butch Reed quit almost immediately after arriving, scuttling their feud. Kevin had Adams, Mike had Gino, and the soon depart Iceman had Jake Roberts. So Kerry got into the mix here. The idea was the Von Erichs were against Devastation Inc. and had long feuded with the Freebirds, so Kerry had no rooting interest despite the fact that Gordy had come back to Texas without Michael and Buddy and was for all intents and purposes a babyface who was not involved with the Von Erichs at that time.

They did a similar angle between Abby and Brody in Fort Worth once, where they moved the match from the end of the show to the middle because they were getting ready to go at it backstage and the powers that be decided to have the match before they got into it back there.
For my money the angle worked and that match between them is probably their best brawl, IMO.
