I will have to sit down and watch this later in-depth, but I just checked out about the 1:13 mark. Backlund chases down Muraco in the tunnel at MSG. Kal screams "Call security" about 100 times and gets involved in the pull apart, which is kinda turn-away awful, and Vince Sr is on camera for a moment.

To this day, I have no idea why Superstar didn't get the belt in December instead of Sheik.

Easy heat to have an Iranian win it and then have Hogan bring it back to the USA.  As simple as that.

The person to beat Backlund that would have made more sense would have Koloff.

I know Koloff was briefly back in 1983, I'm not sure exactly when, but I don't remember him getting any kind of a real push in his last run.  He was also smaller and much older and a generation removed from his win over Bruno.  I think the fans would've just been confused by that more than anything else.

Only thing I remember from  Koloff being in WWF in 83 was his feud with Patterson.  I did see him wrestle Live in Nov of 83.

Koloff was in WWF Jan to Dec of 83. In Fact his last match in WWF was in MSG that night Backlund lost the title.

Koloff did get some title matches against Backlund.

I would have liked to see Masked Superstar win it from Backlund but I thought, maybe I'm wrong ... that I had read somewhere that Masked Superstar turned it down.

Masked Superstar was my first favorite wrestler when I was very young and I definitely rooted for him over Backlund.  I also could've seen him being the first masked NWA champion.  He could work various styles and had that presence to him when he wore the suit with the mask and cut very erudite promos.  For some reason it just never happened.

Koloff made sense be he had the credibility of the win over Bruno and the next month you can still bring in Hogan and let him do his ‘Real American’ thing and have him take the title.

I believe Koloff takes time off early 1984 and was banged up.

No it looks like Koloff took no time off in early 84 looking at results. Koloff's last match in WWF was Dec 26 1983.  He went back to Mid-Atlantic in Dec, and was giving the Mid-Atlantic championship by Dick Slater.
