This well talked about match comes from 12-09-1978 Championship Wrestling, Ivan Putski has his hands full with Mark Masters.
For those who have never seen it, take a look.
Is this a shoot by Masters, maybe some kind of miscommunication or just plain bad wrestling?

With as horribly weak as the punches and kicks that Masters throws early, I just think it was bad wrestling at the start. And I think somewhere around the spot of the first "low blow" that Masters was pissed off and started laying into him. And he wouldn't let Putski hit any of his spots. At the end he went for a backdrop and Masters wouldn't have any part of it.

Not a shoot at all. I think in Masters we may be seeing a guy who's even worse in the ring than Putski. Also, more importantly as far as it being a shoot or not, Masters had a pretty long tenure with the WWF going through until the eighties. In those days if a jobber decided to get cute with a main eventer, he would have been blackballed so hard, that to this day his children wouldn't even be allowed to subscribe to the WWE Network.

Is that the same guy as Mike Masters aka Rocky Jones? He may have been getting his start here. A quick check on Wrestling Data seems to confirm this. He may not have been smartened up completely and ribbed even, as he may have worked the armdrag drills in camp and assumed if he took any offense that guys would go with it. Drawing Ivan as a matchup is something I can easily see as a way for giving the boys something to peek at from the curtain. I love the footage because Putski never gave anyone a chance to look good, and here is a rookie who wouldn't know any better...isn't skilled enough or political enough to know better, slugging it out and not making Putski shine for a change. Masters puts the headlock on the "wrong side" for what it is worth, a trainee mistake and one you grow out of with experience. The best part is the post match promo talking about Maivia and potential bouts with Ivan. In their MSG match, Maivia gives Putski virtually nothing either, and heels by disengaging from any action shutting down Ivan's schtick in effect. They awarded Putski "the decision" but did nothing to warrant the win. The New York office protected Putski forever and let him freestyle with a live mic, but going into business for himself and talking about going for "the belt" wasn't cool. In fact it may have been how he wound up with Santana in a tag title run, maybe an appeasement for Ivan.

In a private group I'm in, we were discussing Mark Masters and it led me to dig out the Putski/Masters match. Here's a 2nd match featuring the very green and stiff Mark Masters taking on Mike Paidousis. From 11-25-1978 All-Star Wrestling. He also had a 3rd match in 1978, Tony Garea, Larry Zbyszko vs. Mark Masters, Baron Mikel Scicluna which I will look to see if I have to share. I love Bruno Sammartinos commentary during the Masters-Paidousis match.

Steubenville, a regular stop for WWWF in the late 70s as well as some independents around this time. I can imagine Count Grog refilling his gas tank there a time or two.

Thanks for posting that match with Paidousis.  Vince notes that this is his first appearance on the Hamburg show, which came a day after Allentown vs. Putski.  I am convinced that Paidousis must have had a hand in training Masters.  What you see in their match is pretty much the exact  kind of thing that the Allentown match could have been, if Putski had any inkling of cooperation. That's not to say even a helpful veteran would have done much to cooperate, but in in Putskis case, it magnified how green Masters was.   Paidousis sells the quick armdrags, the forearms and even the goofy headlock.  Notice how Masters switches sides, as Paidousis probably corrected him quietly underneath.  Paidousis took a nervous rookie and patiently dealt with unsafe spots like the leaping down on his hyperextended elbow, avoiding it twice but not so as to embarrass Masters, just tell the story of his own wily veteran status.  I have to think Paidousis stepped up as someone who wanted Masters to be seen as worth bringing back to future tapings and could do it in a manner Putski could never do anyway, even if he had the attitude of helping someone get over besides himself.  A Paidousis win out of nowhere on television, with the audio track from Bruno and Vince, came across as generous criticism and not a burial of Masters' unpolished work.

Is the match showing up for everyone else? I'm not seeing it in my browser.

Nevermind, I see them now.

Its amazing how Putski transformed his body. Dude was so heavy in the AWA, and he looks like a different person here. Vince asks him about it in the post match interview. He says he's got a "secret formula"...lift heavy and run.

Why WAS Putski so popular? He was the drizzling shits in the ring and his charisma escapes me. His name isn't even that Polish.

I completely agree with OFG that Paidousis had a hand in training Masters. He was very cooperative but still made it a learning experience. A great match to watch if you enjoy the mechanics of how professional wrestling used to work. By the way, Bruno and Mike Paidousis were very close friends going back to the beginning of Bruno's career.

If someone has a chance to look for the Ivan versus High Chief match from Madison Square Garden, maybe they will enjoy it as much as I did. I believe it may even be something I posted in Video Vault a few pages back.

Love how Cappetta calls him Mike Pa-Douche-iss after he wins.

Why is Putski the one who always gets messy with jobbers? Wasn't any another main eventer around to pick up a fight with?
