This kind of thing could have only had happened in the 70's. It makes you wonder if Kenny Jay or George Gadaski had saved their money and bought a promotion would they be long time champions and Verne be a jobber. He is just not believable in the least with that bald pate and morbid obesity thing going on.

Your opinion:  Do you feel that Verne just “let himself go” because he was the promoter and just didn’t care?  Because if you read stories, even in ‘82 he was willing to fight Hogan in the locker room for something Hogan said to his face.  In ‘74, there is zero doubt in my mind that Bockwinkel both looked and performed better than Verne.  In fact, Billy Robinson looks better than Verne and can also perform at the high level.  It’s funny how times change because today, Verne wouldn’t even get a shot.

I don't think Verne "let himself go", he was always looking like an "average guy" type, save for the hairline. Different times, the guys with physiques like you see now we're rarer and portrayed as super strong (like Graham, Ventura, Ellering, as examples of the time frame late 70s early 80s). Verne was a legend locally and a major star, so his look wasn't really questioned much at the time. Same with Robinson for that matter. Both could really wrestle and that was a big part of what the science tofic wrestlers in the AWA were portraying.

It's so hard to say. Verne was certainly no idiot. It's hard to figure out his mindset. He was a 10x AWA champ. He made sure he got around like coming into to MSG for shots. He was smart enough to delve into the movie business with The Wrestler. He was the first to see the potential in pushing Hulk Hogan to a top spot. He made a territory work that was an unholy labyrinth to get from show to show. He must have been doing something right to be able to make money for so many years. If the fans weren't believing that the bald old guy could be champion, it didn't happen until at least 1975 when he dropped the strap to Bock. "Let himself go"? Maybe not in the usual sense. A mark for himself....oh hell yeah.

When you look back on the talent the AWA had, they were the promotion that could have taken on and beat Vince in the early stages of his national expansion. Losing Hogan over a title and payoffs/merchandising rights was the ultimate game changer, and I wonder if Verne ever looked back over his decision and realized just how badly he screwed up.
