Notes from Larry Matysik: This was both the greatest and the saddest night in St. Louis wrestling history. The ceremony and party for Sam Muchnick went like clockwork and presented a montage of local celebrities and dignitaries unmatched anywhere for a wrestling promoter. The video St. Louis Wrestling Classics, Volume X is the best place to get some feeling for the excitement of the night. Wrestling did itself proud. Yet, somehow, we probably all knew that it would never be the same again.

After the show, Larry Matysik was named General Manager of the St. Louis Wrestling Club. Bob Geigel was announced as President, with Pat O’Connor in public now as matchmaker. Muchnick agreed to stay as a consultant. The owners were Geigel, Harley Race, Verne Gagne, and Pat O’Connor.

Notes from Larry Matysik: It was at this show when everyone became aware of Pat O’Connor’s tax problems as the Internal Revenue Service had representatives at the box office, since O’Connor was a partner in the company producing the show. Longtime St. Louis CPA Richard Kawanishi helped work out the situation for the promotion, but O’Connor was in a position where he decided to move back to his native New Zealand. The day he left, Pat came to the office and shook my hand. He said he was sure I could handle things and that I could count on Bob Brown to help on contacts and to carry instructions to the dressing room. Brown was also working in the KC office in addition to wrestling. Of course, Bob Geigel was at all the Kiel/Checkerdome programs, and he handled the payoffs to talent. Naturally, Geigel oversaw all booking and could say yes or no.

Notes from Larry Matysik: This was a show that led to headaches in the office. Going into the evening, I had agreed with Bob Geigel that Flair was going over Bruiser, most likely after a simultaneous pair of flying tackles led to a collision and Flair falling on Dick for the pin. Unfortunately, what was added was referee Sonny Myers being knocked down and unable to respond when Bruiser covered Flair for what was easily ten seconds while the official was disabled and not counting. I was the ring announcer, but since Pat O’Connor had gone, Geigel and Brown handled finishes at the house cards after they and I conferred. I handled tv shows with Bob Brown, giving him the finishes to put in while I did commentary. Naturally, the crowd was irate about the finish with Flair and Bruiser, which I had understood was supposed to be clean, a “blow off” type ending, not a “cute” steal. That was added after I was at ringside, not as a double-cross, but as a typical wrestling, but non-St. Louis, “get out of it” finish. Afterward, I argued that a legend like Bruiser could not lose a title challenge in that manner without a return bout, especially with a big Checkerdome show on the books for June. Who would draw the type of crowd needed at The Checkerdome with the heat still there from Flair-Bruiser? There was also friction about the finish on Kerry Von Erich and Roger Kirby, which was allegededly a wake up call for Kerry, but Roger was booked by KC. {Admittedly, there is an argument for keeping the fans on their toes with a surprise if they were anticipating a win for Kerry – not a had thought at all, IF it were the reason.} In addition, Bob Brown had told me that he had called the Florida office to get Jack Brisco for the match against Terry Funk, but it appeared that had never happened. Mark Romero, Brisco’s sub, was of course booked by KC. Further irritation came when Geigel suggested the April title bout against Flair be given to Rufus R. Jones {who was booked by KC of course} and they have a one-hour “broadway” {a draw – read Flair’s book for his description of doing a one-hour stalemate with Rufus}. It seemed to me so logical that Gene Kiniski should be in the slot against Flair for April 30 coming off his special referee role for Flair-Rhodes on Sam Muchnick’s farewell card Jan. 1, several strong and well-received outings on tv and at Kiel, and especially with his son Kelly making his St. Louis debut April 30. Nothing against Rufus, but he had not headlined a St. Louis card for a few years and his only real crowd drawn on top had been over a decade ago against Dory Funk, Jr. Plus, I wanted Bruiser to tangle with Flair at The Checkerdome in June and contended a rematch from the March 26 fiasco could draw a major crowd and that this was right for St. Louis. One thing led to another. I resigned, Sam as consultant intervened, a deal was made to bring me back, and Kiniski was slated for April 30 and Bruiser for June 12. None of this was public and it all actually happened over the course of a couple days. The angle used for Kiniski was that Gene felt Bruiser should be the champion and had been robbed against Flair. Therefore, Kiniski agreed to give Bruiser first shot if Gene beat Flair, which he intended to do so his son Kelly could see him triumph in his favorite town of St. Louis. Later, with particular input from Flair, we laid out a couple of tv shows that spiced up issues for Ric and Bruiser. Luckily, both April 30 and June 12 did business. In fact, the June 12 battle drew the second biggest house in the history of wrestling at The Checkerdome/Arena.

Notes from Larry Matysik: This was the first show since 1972 when I did not do ring announcing, turning those duties over to Mickey Garagiola or, on later occasion, to John Baker, our tv director from KPLR. I did still do some ring announcing at later cards. By this time, though, there was too much work, and politics at play, in the dressing room for me to be at ringside during every card.

Notes from Larry Matysik: Actually, Jack Brisco had been booked - I thought - as Robertson’s opponent when we found out Terry Funk, due to other commitments, would not be able to fit in the slot which I planned would lead to a crack for Funk against Ric Flair in August. The thought was to slide Brisco right into that position, replacing Terry. Somehow, though, with Bob Brown making the telephone calls to some offices {Brown was supposed to call Florida about Brisco} and me making the calls to other offices, communication stalled and Brisco was likely a no-show for a card on which he never knew he was listed. Was some other agenda being played by the KC office about booking Brisco, leaving Brown in the middle? Some websites today still list Robertson as beating Brisco – that match never happened. It was Robertson over Ray Hernandez. After that, I suggested contacting Dory Jr. to move onto the June 12 card, get a win over Robertson, and go on to face Flair for the crown in August. Everyone seemed satisfied with that.

Notes from Larry Matysik: In a basically meaningless match, the difference between what St. Louis had been and what it would be without Sam was brought home to me once again. Rufus R. Jones beat the masked Superfly, but Superfly started to leave the ring. As ring announcer, I called to him and said that the mask had to come off. He was confused, surprised, probably thought it was me “working,” and scampered from the ring. That just wasn’t St. Louis, so I announced that Superfly refused to unmask, but he was in reality Ray Candy. Look through the results – how many masked wrestlers who were pinned or forced to submit in singles matches had revealed their identity for more than twenty years? Later, when I went to the dressing room during intermission, Bob Geigel asked me why I told the fans who Superfly was. I said, in St. Louis, a masked wrestler who loses always unmasks and reveals his identity. Bob said that they didn’t do that in Kansas City and wouldn’t do it in St. Louis now. I said that was all news to me, since we hadn’t discussed this, nor had anything been said on tv or in the “Wrestling” news because we had not agreed on that change. Poor Bob. He threw up his hands and walked away.

Notes from Larry Matysik: Yes, Terry Gordy of the Freebirds, but no music. In addition, obviously Hulk Hogan was no big deal at the box office in St. Louis at this point. Also, I was instructed by Geigel through Brown that Dewey Robertson was a heel on KC television; therefore, Dewey had to be booked as a heel in St. Louis even though Robertson had never been used that way in St. Louis.

Notes from Larry Matysik: This was the beginning of the push for Brody to oppose Flair at The Checkerdome on Feb. 11, 1983, though that was not the original idea. The original thought was to build Kerry Von Erich for the title shot. But Harley Race proved to be the stumbling block, as he would not agree to put Kerry over clean so that Von Erich could win the Missouri title and use that as the launching pad for Kerry versus Flair. Harley said he didn’t want to become a former world champion who just did jobs in main events, though that certainly wasn’t going to happen in St. Louis as he was part owner. My thought was that Harley, to some extent like Gene Kiniski, would win a lot of main events, get regular title shots, and only on rare occasion – like for Kerry – drop a big main event. I felt that Kerry needed the clean win and being Missouri champion for the extra juice going into The Checkerdome and its 19,000 plus seats. Harley agreed to give Kerry the state crown, but only through a gimmick that the title changed hands on a disqualification in that particular event. But that match wouldn’t fit until Jan. 21, the last Kiel bill before The Checkerdome. Even though Kerry would have the Missouri belt, it would have been a flat victory coming by DQ, especially after Harley had been disqualified a few times since dropping the NWA prize. In addition, the main heat from a DQ would be on the wrestler who was disqualified. Race also owned a pair of one-two-three victories over Kerry. We all agreed, finally, that Kerry would get the Missouri crown, go on a winning streak with that honor, and challenge Flair at The Checkerdome in June. That didn’t happen, of course, because I was long gone from the St. Louis Wrestling Club by then and St. Louis was in turmoil. {In fact, my opposition promotion, not the SLWC, ended up with the June date at The Checkerdome.} At any rate, I argued for Brody as the only current star who could “get over” quickly enough to the extent needed for big business at The Checkerdome on Feb. 11. Reluctantly, Bob Geigel agreed. Then Race informed me that he would work with Giant Baba on Feb. 11 and was doing a clean job for Baba as a favor to Japan. I understood his personal, political reason for it, but it certainly didn’t benefit St. Louis plans or fans. Privately, I told Brody I would be resigning from the SLWC and telling the partners on Jan. 1, but Brody begged me to stay through the Feb. 11 date, as Japanese television would be taping the show and he wanted me there to engineer the promotion properly. I finally agreed, as I had been the person arguing for Brody to get that opportunity. And, indeed, I did have fun and satisfaction laying out the plan to do Flair versus Reed on Jan. 1, plus to get Cowboy Bob Orton and Rick Martel started in St. Louis. A look at the next couple months of cards verify that absolutely no angle or “hot shot” was done for Flair versus Brody. It was grass roots, clean and simple, but the incredible appeal of both characters – Brody and Flair – made Feb. 11 another historic night for St. Louis wrestling.

A few notes on 1981 and 1982. Bruiser had a brief alliance with Blackjack Mulligan's Knoxville, Tennessee promotion in latter portion of 1981. It only lasted a few months.

The same thing happened with Jerry Jarrett in late 1982. Jarrett and Bruiser formed a brief partnership. Jarrett wanted Bruiser to take some time off feeling Bruiser was stale in Indianapolis. Bruiser didn't see it that way. Dick put himself over Jarrett's top heel Kimala the Ugandan Giant. The promotional partnership between Jarrett & Bruiser ended a few weeks later.

I've always heard/read Wilbur Snyder sold his shares of the Indianapolis promotion and retired in late 1982. However Snyder's name pops up on one Chicago card and a few Indianapolis cards in 1983. It's possible Snyder did sell his shares in the Indianapolis promotion in 1982 but continued to wrestle occasionally after the sale happened. It's also possible Wilbur didn't sell his shares until his last Indianapolis appearance in 1983. I'm not sure what the deal is here. I'll ask on KM about it.

I was looking at Inoki's Record which is on line and they have a 7-25-64 date in Long Beach, California where Bruiser wrestles Inoki and Inoki wins on a DQ. Inoki is billed as Little Tokyo.

Also in the tag match from that time frame you have Bruiser teaming with The Ripper.
In the Inoki page they are saying that it is Rip Hawk.

Just google Inoki Record and it will come up.

Rich,

I'm aware of that. It confuses me too. I'll check the Long Beach paper. As for the Ripper being Rip Hawk, I've heard/read that as well.

Bill Dromo drew The Alaskan 15:00

7/28/64 Long Beach, CA @ Municipal Auditorium

Dominic DeNucci beat Prince Ava in 11:00

I think Inoki may have used both names Tokyo Tom & Little Tokyo. Not 100 percent sure on that. Unless Long Beach ran two cards in one week, the listing in the Inoki ring record is wrong. I'll check the Long Beach paper again anyway.

Claw,

The Ripper was Rip Hawk in the Los Angeles Territory.  I'm currently researching Rip Hawk for a career record.

July 25, 1964 was a Saturday. SoCal territory ran San Bernardino on Saturday night. Not sure that Bruiser who was red hot in California at the time as a monster heel would have taken any kind of loss to a relative unknown. Also keep in mind that a week later in San Bernardino, Inoki lost clean to Bill Dromo who was certainly not at a Bruiser level.

Bill Afflis vs Buddy Brooks at half time of the University of Nevada vs California college basketball game

I found this listing in the Reno Evening Gazette, but dated January 27, 1951.

Edit: It's also in the Nevada State Journal. This definitely happened in January, not December.

Hope all these little bits and bobs help. I think I've exhausted my Newspaper Archive searching skills now.

Here are two from Hammond, 1981 that are in a wrestling results bulletin up for bid on Ebay right now. The scan from one of the pages shows these two. I plan to bid on the issue.
If anyone wants to look at these and a lot more results do so by tomorrow when the bidding is over.
Go to EBay and punch in Wrestling Newletter 1981 for a few different issues then scan to bottom where the seller shows about 7-8 different pages of results.

Notes from Larry Matysik: It wasn’t a huge deal, but it reconfirmed to me that I was making the correct decision in leaving the St. Louis Wrestling Club. Rick Martel was really starting to catch on and I felt – Sam agreed for what it’s worth, although he had resigned as consultant – that Rick might have potential as a fiery, young baby face in main events. I talked to Rick early that day and we decided to recreate what happened when Johnny Valentine “arrived” late {Edouard Carpentier had also done it once} for a match with Dick the Bruiser more than 25 years before. I wanted Rick to replace Spike Huber after a few minutes, since Rick was the scheduled foe for Ox Baker, and while still in street clothes defeat Ox in less than a minute – Ox jumping Rick, Martel making comeback hot and fast, then the pin. Martel even came to Kiel late and ran to the ring with his suitcase in hand. But – Bob Geigel would not go along with the pin. Bob said we had to protect Ox because they were doing something with him in KC {so why would a non-TV bout in St. Louis matter?} and we should do something with Baker in St. Louis. Thus, after wasted time debating how far Martel could go in St. Louis and being told a DQ was plenty, we had to settle for the disqualification. With all due respect to Ox, how many times had he lost in almost twenty years coming to St. Louis? He wasn’t getting younger, and he wasn’t getting quicker. Martel had excellent potential and an exciting, unexpected finish like planned could have helped him. Instead, Ox threw Martel over the top rope, and the crowd went “ho hum” after first getting all stirred up. St. Louis was no longer the primary focus of the promotion. It was indeed time to go.

att: 16,695
Notes from Larry Matysik: I actually notified the partners I was done the day after The Checkerdome show. They were shocked even after our difficult year together. Truthfully, I was sick about it myself. Harley Race, Bob Geigel, and Pat O’Connor all did their best with what they knew about wrestling; sadly, their background was totally different from mine with Sam Muchnick. But the future in St. Louis, especially without Sam as the balance point, looked bleak. In the end, I had no status as a stockholder if the promotion drifted more and more in a direction opposite from what St. Louis had always been. Plus, the NWA was a shadow of what it had been. For me, it was time to move in a different direction.

Notes from Larry Matysik : Larry Matysik resigned from the St. Louis Wrestling Club Feb. 12 and left after the above card, leaving the company with no local representation though he did do television commentary through March. Matysik started his own independent promotion later that spring.

Ratings and attendance figures fell immediately for the St. Louis Wrestling Club, which was informed in the fall that “Wrestling at the Chase” would be cancelled at the end of 1983. The World Wrestling Federation, which Matysik joined in February 1984, took over the old time slot of “Wrestling at the Chase” on Channel 11 in January 1984.

The glory era of wrestling in St. Louis was officially finished.

7/15/83 St Louis. MO
Missouri Title Tournament
FIRST ROUND:
Ric Flair beat Bulldog Bob Brown via pin in 11:03 with a small package.
Dick The Bruiser beat Bobby Duncum via pin in 4:16 after an atomic drop.
Crusher Jerry Blackwell beat Buzz Tyler via pin in 11:15 after a giant splash.
Bruce Butch Reed beat Von Raschke via pin in 9:40 with a rolling cradle.
Blackjack Lanza beat Jerry Ho via pin in 6:41 after a piledriver.
David Von Erich beat Tonga John via pin in 4:07 with a reverse cradle
Jesse The Body Ventura beat Emil Vachon in 4:07 with a backbreaker.
Cowboy Bob Orton beat Manny Fernandes via pin in 11:42 with a reverse suplex.
Dewey Robertson drew George Wells 15:00 but was awarded the victory
Hulk Hogan beat Korsika Korchenko via pin in 2:22 after a giant legdrop.

Robertson won the bout but Wells continued to Round Two. It is possible Dewey was injured. It is also possible this was a swerve that allowed Robertson to receive the victory but gave Wells the opportunity to advance.

There were reports Korchenko did not appear and a grappler named Howard Jacobs took his place.  One record even had Hogan defeating Jacobs before the tournament and then topping Korchenko.  The  Globe-Democrat article said the bout took place as announced.

ROUND TWO:
David Von Erich drew Bob Orton Jr 15:00 but was awarded the referee's decision
Bruce Reed beat Ventura via pinwith a rolling cradle in 7:32
Blackjack Lanza beat Dick The Bruiser dq when Bruiser tossed Jack over the top rope in 7:12.
