Added some Denver cards from 1956 and 1957. Time to go look at Greely before starting 1959.

Nothing came up from Bruiser in Greely from 1955 to 1959. Used the search words "Dick Afflis". "Bruiser", "Bruiser Afflis" and finally "Dick The Bruiser". I may have to research Greeley the old fashioned way by using "wrestling" as the search word

At the beginning of 1959, Angelo Poffo was United States Champion having beaten Wilbur Snyder on Cincinnati TV on 12/27/58. During 1959 with the pairing of promoters Jim Barnett and Johnny Doyle controlling the US Title, there were different US Champions in different cities. The title lineage is very hard to follow from that point forward because at times each Barnett and Doyle controlled city would have its own champion. This particular year still needs a ton of work. There are missing Detroit cards and missing Indianapolis cards on which Bruiser appeared. Bruiser left Fred Kohler and began working for Barnett and Doyle. When Bruiser was not booked by Barnett and Doyle, he would wrestle for other promotions. Barnett and Doyle would collect a fee when Bruiser would wrestle for those other promotions. They were basically Bruiser's booking agents. Barnett and Doyle would not form their own version of the AWA until 1960. Many historians still refer to the US Title as a NWA controlled title until the formation of Barnett and Boyle's AWA. I'm not sure if the NWA part of that is true. More research needs to be done in order to find out a story that makes more sense. 1/8/59 Fort Wayne, IN Hans Schmidt beat Dick the Bruiser DTB pelted with eggs after match Don McClarty & Roy McClarty beat Boris Volkoff & Nicoli Volkoff Bobby Managoff beat Gino Angelo Att: 9,039, sell out with over 3000 reportedly fans turned away 1/10/59 Akron, OH Guy Brunetti beat Gorgeous George dq Dick The Bruiser beat Bobby Brown Joe Brunetti beat Baron Gattoni Tony Marino drew Frank Fozo 1/15/59 Cleveland, OH @ Public Auditorium Lord Layton & Ilio DiPaolo beat Doc Gallagher & Mike Gallagher dq Dick The Bruiser beat Gorgeous George in 1:15 Edouard Carpentier beat Baron Gattoni Guy Brunetti & Joe Brunetti beat Jim Wright & Bob "Legs" Langevin Man Mountain Montana beat Wally Greb Bobby Brown drew Frank Fozo att. 7,694 1/21/59 Kokomo, IN @ Memorial Gym Dick The Bruiser beat Bobby Managoff Edouard Carpentier vs Legs Wilson Plus two other matches 1/22/59 Cleveland, OH @ Public Auditorium Guy Brunetti & Joe Brunetti beat Doc Gallagher & Mike Gallagher by referee's decision in the 3rd fall Bobby Brown beat Gorgeous George dq Ilio DiPaolo ddq Dick The Bruiser Little Beaver & Mario Sanchez beat Tom Thumb & Mighty Schultz Man Mountain Montana beat Al Albertino Jim Wright drew Dick Beyer att. 7,481 1/23/59 Cincinnati, OH @ Gardens Dick The Bruiser vs Edouard Carpentier US Champion Angelo Poffo vs Wilbur Snyder Yukon Eric vs Gino Angelo Shirley Strimple vs Elaine Johnson Bobby Managoff vs Legs Wilson Johnny Weaver vs Billy Goelz Promoter: Jim Barnett Note: Legs Wilson aka Bob "Legs" Langevin. Davis having his hands full trying to keep segregation in the public schools. Thus this is hardly the time for the boxing commission to plug for integration in the fight racket. So the ring fans have to turn to wrestling – and what a revolution! I never would have believed there would be so much interest in that sport here, but times are changing – everything is changing. Anyway, the grapplers are making hay all over the country and Joe Gunther aims to reap all he can here by bringing in the best big boys he can find. Seems he found a couple of big Japanese named Mitsu Arakawa and Kinji Shibuya who have some judo holds called chop and "claw." It's a shame Jim Murtagh, who passed away recently, wasn't around to see the 6,000 and $7,600 gate last week at the Auditorium, but at least his widow, Ernestine, is part of the promotion along with Manda Gunther, Joe's wife. Joe aims to put on top shows whenever he can get the Auditorium. His next show will be Thursday night. Gorgeous George, perfume and all, will be on the next show, according to Joe. BRUISER IN HOT WATER – "Lafayette, I ain't coming." That, in effect, is what Dick the Bruiser said Friday night as he swam languidly in a New Orleans pool. And those words cost him $500 and an indefinite suspension. Seems the Bruiser was billed for a tag-team bout in Lafayette Friday but decided "they don't need me" so he failed to show. The Louisiana boxing commission didn't take kindly to that so it fined him the $500 and will give it to promoter Harry Romero to help compensate for his loss when the star was absent. Martin Burke, commissioner, said they were trying hard to make all states recognize such suspensions, and Emile Bruneau is going to press for it at the boxing commissions' convention in Mexico City. "Already Chicago heard about this deal," said Burke, "and asked us to go easy on the Bruiser. But we must protect the promoters as well as others in wrestling and you can't do it without penalizing offenders." In wrestling some might get away with taking a dive, but a swim can be costly. New Orleans LA: August 22, 1960 (Monday) Wrestler Dick the Bruiser is ordered by the Louisiana boxing commission to pay Lafayette LA promoter Harry Romero $212.50 for expenses incurred when the Bruiser no-showed a card there Friday, Aug. 19 … In addition, the commission levied a $250 fine on the Indiana athlete with the understanding he is to appear in Lafayette within 30 days and pay the reimbursement and fine within 72 hours. The Bruiser, attending in person, said "the whole thing was a misunderstanding, a mistake on my part." 8/24/60 Anderson, IN @ National Guard Armory TV Taping featuring Wilbur Snyder, Joe Blanchard, Nick Bockwinkel, Mysterious Medics, Pepper Gomez, Dick The Bruiser, Angelo Poffo & Bronko Lubich Note: "Movies to be made of all bouts to be shown later on channel 4." 8/27/60 Milwaukee, WI @ Auditorium Special Referee: Bobo Brazil Wilbur Snyder beat Dick The Bruiser 2/3 Bobo Brazil beat Wee Willie Davis Guy Brunetti & Joe Brunetti drew Mitsu Arakawa & Kinji Shibuya Pepper Gomez beat Lou Whitson Angelo Poffo vs Jack Allen HOOKS AND JABS (By Pete Baird, New Orleans LA Times-Picayune, Sunday, August 28, 1960) (column excerpt) … (Dick the Bruiser) was put on the carpet last week by the boxing commission and fined $500 for running out of his engagement at Lafayette. That wasn't a terrific blow to the Bruiser, however. During the commission session the Bruiser was asked how much dough he makes a month. "It fluctuates (goes up and down, boys)," said Richard. VIEWING THE NEWS (By Bill Keefe, New Orleans LA Times-Picayune, Tuesday, September 27, 1960) (column excerpt) … Wrestling interests in Alabama, where Joe Gunther zoomed the mat game next to football as a sports attraction, are beckoning Gunther to return and once more take the helm as promoter. But Gunther (has) turned down the offer and said even if he wanted to make the change he'd have trouble getting his wife to leave their adopted New Orleans. "We've lived here for more than twenty years and probably will remain for the rest of our lives," said Joe. "Crescent City mat fans have been loyal with their regular attendance and now that we are in a position to bring in all the topflight wrestling talent, we aim to stay and continue surpassing attendance-wise cities with much larger populations." Gunther said he had to switch his Municipal Auditorium date to Tuesday of this week as it was the only date available. "We didn't want to miss the chance to show Pepper Gomez, whom the fans have poured in requests to see in action against Dick the Bruiser," Gunther said. The latter said the expected huge crowd Tuesday night will bring the total attendance mark well past the 15,000 figure for the month of October. Emile Bruneau, chairman of the Louisiana State Athletic Commission, is supervising wrestling with the same diligence he does the boxing game and Bruneau says he and other commission members are happy with talent and attractions Gunther is presenting. "Most of the leading wrestlers are college graduates and well-behaved fellows and can hold their own in conversations on any given subject," said Emile. 9/27/60 New Orleans, LA @ Municipal Auditorium Referee: Al Massey Dick the Bruiser beat Pepper Gomez 2/3 Adrian Baillargeon & Paul Anderson beat Mickey Sharpe & Gorgeous George Jim LaRock beat Chuck Berger att: 5,000 9/29/60 Fort Wayne, IN Archie Moore referee Mitsu Arakawa & Kinji Shibuya ddq Guy Brunetti & Joe Brunetti' Dick The Bruiser beat Wilbur Snyder Fuzzy Cupid beat Little Beaver Lorraine Johnson beat Millie Stafford Att: 4,187 9/30/60 Detroit, MI @ Olympia Stadium Special Referee: Archie Moore Antonino Rocca beat US Champion Dick The Bruiser on a 3rd fall dq Guy Brunetti & Joe Brunetti beat Roy Shire & Ray Shire Larry Chene beat Dick “Bulldog” Brower (sub Brute Bernard) Bill Miller beat Nick Bock Yukon Eric beat Cowboy Rocky Lee Dan Miller beat Emile Dupre Att: 15,154 10/1/60 Milwaukee, WI @ Arena Dick The Bruiser beat Pepper Gomez 2/3 1 Bruiser beat Gomez 2 Gomez beat Bruiser with a claw hold 3 Bruiser pinned Gomez Hair vs Masks Verne Gagne & Bobo Brazil beat The Medics 2-0 and unmasked them as "two Spaniards." 1 Brazil pinned one of the Medics after a series of koko bonks 2 Gagne beat one of the Medics with a sleeper hold Bob Ellis beat Rocky Lee via pin after a bulldog headlock Joe Blanchard beat Emile DuPre via pin after a series of dropkicks Cowboy Bradley & Lord Littlebrook beat Tony Roe & Bull Brummell Att: "4,727 patrons" 10/5/60 Anderson, IN @ National Guard Armory TV Taping 8 bouts featuring Yukon Eric, Dick The Bruiser, Ray Shire, Roy Shire, Angelo Poffo, Bronko Lubich, Bob Ellis, Pepper Gomez and many more stars Note: "Movies to be made of all bouts to be shown later on channel 4." 10/8/60 Cincinnati, OH The Sheik & Dick The Bruiser beat Yukon Eric & Hercules Cortez Bob Ellis drew Kinji Shibuya Pepper Gomez drew Mitsu Arawaka Wilbur Snyder beat Dan Miller June Byers beat Millie Stafford Emile Dupre drew Ralph Bartleman 10/12/60 Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada @ Memorial Arena Dick The Bruiser beat Bob Ellis 2/3 in 28:00 1 Bruiser beat Ellis 2 Ellis beat Bruiser at the 20 minute mark 3 Bruiser pinned Ellis at the 28 minute mark after using a chair Dr. Bill Miller beat Guy Brunetti in 38:00 Joe Brunetti beat Pete (Dan?) 1961 is almost finished. Just need to add the Milwaukee cards from that year and I'll be done with it. Most complete year yet.

The United States Title gets very confusing in 1961. Promoters Jim Barnett and Johnny Doyle ran cards in a number of cities including Detroit, Indianapolis and Denver. Barnett and Doyle were in control of the United States Title. But each city at times had different United States Champions. Wilbur Snyder might have the strap in one city. Dick The Bruiser in another. Bob Ellis in another. And so on and so forth. OK that's easy to understand. Roy Shire ran his first card in San Francisco on March 4, 1961. He was affiliated with Barnett and Doyle using much of the same talent in San Francisco and other Northern California cities. However Roy Shire created his own United States Champion in Ray Stevens who was known as Ray Shire everywhere else but the San Francisco territory for most of 1961. Ray Stevens wasn't the only one playing the name game. Hercules Cortez was Cortez in one city, Raoul Romero in another and Hercules Romero in another. When you see these types of things in the listings, it's not my mistake. That's just the way it was. 1/6/61 Buffalo, NY @ Memorial Auditorium Dick The Bruiser beat Mike Gallagher Bobo Brazil beat Doc Gallagher Red Feather & Brown Panther beat Irish Jackie & Billy The Kid Bearcat Wright beat Ramon Lopez Miguel Perez beat Joe Lacorte Joe Christie beat Billy Parks att: 4,588 1/7/61 Cincinnati, OH @ Gardens Original lineup Dick the Bruiser & The Sheik vs Magnificent Maurice & Johnny Barend Bobo Brazil vs Angelo Poffo Red Bastien & Lou Bastien vs Juan Sebastian & Nick Kolonas Frankie Talaber vs Golden Menace 1/7/61 Cincinnati, OH Results from another source Dick The Bruiser & The Sheik no contest Johnny Barend & Magnificent Maurice Bobo Brazil beat Angelo Poffo Bob Ellis beat Danno O’Shocker & Gregory Jarque Frankie Talaber beat Golden Menace 1/12/61 Milwaukee, WI @ Auditorium Dick The Bruiser & Killer Kowalski beat Yukon Eric & Bob Ellis when Bruiser pinned Ellis in 9:30 of the 3rd fall Red Bastien & Lou Bastien no contest Angelo Poffo & Bronco Lubich Bobo Brazil beat Dr. X and unmasked him "but the Doctor left in a huffin' hurry and his identity is still a mystery."
