Jahno.

The crowd was totally split, in a constant uproar, and completely beside themselves when Dick’s outburst led to his disqualification.)

Notes from Larry Matysik:
If anyone ever got the classic build, it was Jack Brisco. Here was the former national collegiate champion, a charismatic and obviously talented young star. St. Louis could feel they were part of his growing up, as Brisco came so close over a year to bursting through to stardom, only to be stopped in nip-and-tuck, thrilling battles by salty, nasty competitors like Kiniski, Lanza, and the Crimson Knight. But he kept coming back, getting victories, displaying his fire, coming oh-so-close. Therefore, when Brisco finally blasted through the ceiling, he was accepted and respected as a star. It was a status Jack Brisco had earned in the eyes of the fans. Plus, look ahead to March 5 when Brisco was generous enough to set up Lanza for Dory. If Brisco held the champ to a draw, and Lanza beat Brisco, wasn’t it logical that Lanza could defeat Funk? And, amazingly, Brisco never scored a victory over Lanza until May 27, 1977.)

This match with Bruiser and Heenan against The Chain Gang definitely had the most heat of any match that I've ever witnessed at The Amphitheatre. When Heenan turned and helped the Gang beat on Bruiser I thought there was going to be a full scale riot.

No one ran in to help Bruiser and he took a beatdown for a few minutes before he cleared house.

I knew Rick would remember the storyline of the match because he was there live in person. And Rich also saved me from having to use the Advanced search at KM to dig up an old thread about that match and card.

Notes from Larry Matysik: The early segment of 1971 is pretty clear that Raschke would have somehow beaten The Bruiser on Jan. 15 if Raschke had not been ill. That victory would have boosted Raschke into a title shot at Dory Jr, which was a tough spot following the first Brisco-Dory sellout. Apparently, Sam Muchnick had enough faith in Raschke drawing adequately to give him the championship slot even without the victory Jan. 15. Nothing was changed in the overall outline of main events, because Raschke losing a Texas Death Match to Bruiser would have been the payback for Dick doing the job in January. The only guy who lost out was Raschke, who missed a main event payoff in January!

Notes from Larry Matysik: Sam Muchnick definitely stubbed his toe when it came to Greg and Johnny Valentine. Greg was originally noted – correctly – as the son of Johnny. But then Johnny complained to Sam that this made Johnny, still a meaningful contender for the NWA title, look old. Sam told me that Johnny had a lot of pride, Greg had seldom wrestled under his real name at that time, and we made up some story that we were wrong and Greg was really Johnny’s younger brother. Thus, the Valentine BROTHERS won that Wrestle Royal. Greg was also masterfully utilized to build a battle between Johnny and Von Raschke. Ouch! Years later, when Greg was making a big name for himself as Greg Valentine and his father had retired, Greg was booked again and just quietly acknowledged as the son of Johnny Valentine. In fact, in 1981 I put together Greg Valentine versus Kerry Von Erich and pushed it as a renewal of the feud their fathers, Johnny and Fritz, had years back. Sam was motivated by his loyalty to and friendship with Johnny, who had been a major star for Muchnick for years. Nonetheless, shame on us. Proves we’re all human, though, doesn’t it?

Notes from Larry Matysik: With all due respect to the solid ability of the performers involved, how in the world did that handicap match get so high on the card in a box office position? The main event was strong, but the supporting lineup mediocre. Perhaps the booker was looking out for his home territory where most of the non-main event wrestlers worked, getting them a better pay day in St. Louis? Or was some talent just poorly put together, territory guys being pushed at the expense of more established drawing cards? This was also during a period when the Kansas City office pressured for more St. Louis shows, which hurt the bottom line in the long run. These were trends that would come and go, before becoming a point of contention years later when Sam Muchnick retired.
