This record book is a work in progress. Please do not copy and paste it into your files until I am finished. I am doing this to help out a friend that is working on a book about the life and times of Dick The Bruiser. BIG CAMPUS HEAVYWEIGHTS CLASH IN HALF-TIME WRESTLING TONIGHT (Nevada State Journal, Reno NV, Saturday, January 27, 1951) Wrestling fans who have missed the grunt and groan sport locally are advised to travel to University of Nevada's gymnasium tonight where a heavyweight match between two young giants should be well worth watching. Between halves of the Nevada-California Aggie basketball game, a 12-minute battle will be staged by two former state champions. Burly Bill Afflis, huge 248-pound athlete who formerly held the Indiana state heavyweight championship, will grapple with Wolfpack football fullback Buddy Brooks. The latter, a 218-pounder, is an ex-Minnesota AAU champion and more recently represented Reno YMCA in the Pacific AAU tournaments. The match was announced by athletic director Joe Shecketski, who says the big fellows will tangle at professional rules, which permit speed and slam-bang action, rather than the less colorful collegiate style. 1/27/51 Reno, NV Bill Afflis vs Buddy Brooks at half time of the University of Nevada vs California college basketball game 2/10/53 Reno, NV Buddy Brooks beat Bill Afflis with a leg lock Note: Those first two matches were exhibition bouts. 6/24/54 Reno, NV @ Moana Park Leo Nomellini beat Bulldog Danny Plechas 1 Plechas pinned Nomellini in 13:30 2 Nomellini pinned Plechas as the 23 minute mark. 3 Nomellini pinned Plechas in at the 30 minute mark. I have one more record book to check before moving on to 1959. Just have to find that record book among my piles and piles of wrestling related material. There may be even more Bruiser listings on newspaperarchive.com but the search engine is messed up changing the number of listings drastically when I press my back button.

I'm going to be adding more info on the Chicago cards from Tim Hornbaker's legacyofwrestling.com site before I start on 1959. 1959 at first glance looks like a tough year to do for Bruiser. He didn't wrestle in Milwaukee or NYC that year. Only wrestled once in Chicago. Maybe the state of Indiana will be the key. I also know he wrestled in Georgia a bit that year. He also wrestled in Detroit some although I don't have complete Detroit results for that year. He did wrestle a few bouts in Florida that year. I don't have Omaha listings for that year either. Looks like I'll be depending a lot on the Google News Archive and newspaperarchives.com for 1959. One of the fucked up things about Windows Vista computers is the advanced search in the my documents section does not work nearly as well as the one they had in Windows XP.

I use the Total Commander for file searching (pure text files, no Word/HTML crap). I did convert the Vance Nevada doc files some time ago so if anyone needs them just say so.

Tim Hornbaker just informed me there were some Bruiser matches in Denver prior to 1959. I'll post them later. Bruiser also wrestled in Denver during 1959. There is another Colorado city that is on newspaperarchives.com that might have some Bruiser matches too. I can't remember the name of the city off hand but it came up when I was helping Vance Nevada research the career of Don Leo Jonathan. I'll recognize the city when I see it. So 1959 will have to wait again for a bit while I do some researching and editing.
