I just read something about him today on ESPN "Page2" and they mentioned he was a wrestler. Anybody know anything about his exploits in the ring other than what I'd find through a Google? I found this link, which was basic: http://www.teddwebb.com/wrestling_hall_of_fame/lenny_montana.html Wickipedia stated he was a mobster. I'd like to find out why. Thanks! Montana was the second and less famous Chief Chewacki. I don't know all that much about Len Montana but I'll share what I do know. He was in the AWA right at the start of the promotion. Here's the AWA's first card. 8/16/60 Minneapolis, MN AWA Tag Team Champions Tiny Mills & Stan Kowalski no contest Verne Gagne & Joe Scarpello Gene Kiniski beat Man Mountain Campbell Bob Geigel beat George Grant Len Montana beat John Swenski Att.-6,213 Man Mountain Campbell aka The Kentuckian Big Luke Brown, George Grant was one of the Gorgeous George copies. 10/4/60 Minneapolis, MN Hard Boiled Haggerty & Len Montana beat Tiny Mills & Stan Kowalski to win AWA Tag Title Joe Scarpello beat Pepper Martin Bob Geigel beat Guy Hill Jim Hady beat Black Jack Daniels Guy Hill aka Guy Mitchell, Jerry Valiant and a ton of other aliases 3/18/61 St. Paul, MN Leo Nomellini & Verne Gagne beat Gene Kiniski & Len Montana 2/3 Len Montana reportedly suffers a broken leg and has to vacate his half of the AWA Tag Team Title. Hard Boiled Haggerty then chooses Gene Kiniski as his new partner to defend the belts on future cards. AWA US Champion Wilbur Snyder beat Hard Boiled Haggerty Stan Kowalski beat Jim Hady Joe Scarpello beat Vic Christy Att: 4,896 Montana didn't break his leg. He just left the territory and began wrestling in Florida.

Thanks Claw. On the 3/18/61 card, there may be a typo. I would think it should state "Hard Boiled Haggerty and Len Montona" rather than Gene Kiniski since he was chosen after. Not to nitpick but I know you like your match results. Did I miss something there?

No you didn't miss anything. Haggerty & Montana were the tag champs. Kiniski was Montana's partner in that tag match. Montana suffers a broken leg. After the fact, Haggerty, one half of the tag champs, chose Kiniski to replace Montana as his championship partner.

First off I want to say hi to all the members here and thanks to the moderators for the invite. Don't worry, I'm not another AWA guy but I consider myself a WWA guy. In Scott Teal's 'Whatever happened to?' issue with Hard Boiled Haggerty, Haggerty claims that he was first offered the role of Luca Brasi but then was passed over when the producers of the film wanted more Italian actors in the roles. True or not? Haggerty was known to stretch the truth a little as all wrestlers do.

In the mid 50's, Len Montana wrestled under a mask as "The Mask" in Minnesota. He was unmasked by Hard Boiled Haggerty, his future tag team partner.

Is that the same Joe Scarpello who gained great fame as Chief Jay Strongbow? Damn, he was old in the 1970's.

Scarpello was a 3 time Big Ten wrestling champ who started in the pros about the same time Verne did (they both had spots on the '48 US Greco Roman Olympic team which stayed home) and he was Verne's regular tag team partner up until probably the late 60s, and did spot tag work with him after that. Scarpello did a ton of mid-card work for the AWA proper and AWA Omaha.
