1/5/83 Sumter, SC @ Exhibition Center
Abdullah The Butcher, Jimmy Valiant & Sweet Brown Sugar vs. Bruiser Brody, Paul Jones & One Man Gang

There have been debates about this scheduled appearance of Brody here in Sumter.  I lived there most of my life and don't *ever* remember seeing him wrestle here.

The previous card in Sumter was held on 12-15-82 and here is the clip for the results:

You can see that they advertise Dory Funk, Jr. teaming with John Gray and Paul Jones for the card on 1-5-83.  I don't think that Brody was there (or any other time) in Sumter.

Brickhouse Brown defeated Ali Bey
Mark Fleming defeated Hans Schroeder
Penny Mitchell & Peggy Patterson defeated Donna Christanello & Leilani Kai
Don Kernodle & Ernie Ladd defeated Angelo Mosca Sr. & Jr.

This result is actually from 1984.

What makes this interesting Larry is that Dory Funk was NOT in Sumter that evening; he was in Charlotte at the Television Taping:

1/5/83 Charlotte, NC(TV)

Mike Rotundo beat Ken Timbs
Jerry Brisco, Bob Orton, Jr. & Dick Slater beat Larry Lane, Dory Funk, Jr. & Greg Valentine by DQ
Jay Youngblood beat Ricky Harris
Johnny Weaver beat Don Kernodle by DQ
Tommy Gilbert beat Ben Alexander
Roddy Piper beat Ken Timbs
Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood beat Ricky Harris & Masa Fuchi
Dick Slater & Greg Valentine beat Timmy Gilbert & Mark Fleming
Bob Orton, Jr. beat Frank Monte
Mike Rotundo beat Larry Lane

So, someone replaced him in Sumter...

That is what I've seen before.  And it was discussed that if he was in Charlotte for that TV taping, could he have done that match early and still made the drive to Sumter for the evening match?  It's about a 90 minute drive from Charlotte to Sumter.  If Dory's match was taped around 6:00 pm, he could have made it to Sumter for the main event later on.  Not saying that is what happened, but maybe possible?  Not likely I know because making that trip from Charlotte to Sumter for a mid week show doesn't sound like a high priority for someone of Dory's stature.

I don't recall who was in Sumter that night, but I'm fairly sure it wasn't Brody.  This is one wrestling mystery that I'd love to know the answer to!

I *think* this is when Steamboat and Youngblood 'won the titles' (not the official switch)? Supposedly one of many nights they won the titles around the loop? I remember reading something like that....

3/27/83 Toronto, Ontario
Rudy Kay draw Billy Red Lyons
The Destroyer beat Nick DeCarlo
Tony Parisi beat Kurt Von Hess
Bobby Bass beat Brian Mackney
Tiger Jeet Singh beat Frankie Lane
Jim Nelson beat Terry Kay(13:31) to win NWA Canadian Television Title
Mike Rotundo beat Leo Burke by DQ
Ricky Steamboat & Jay Youngblood beat Sgt. Slaughter & Don Kernodle in a steel cage match
NWA World Champion Ric Flair beat Roddy Piper

your are right. they repeated the title switch at this show. i was at this show. i was just a tiny kid but i still remember it. it was electric at the Gardens that night. one of the biggest reactions i ever saw there. deafening. the fans loved Ricky and Jay.

I was a watching footage of a match with Greg Valentine and Roddy Piper and Dick Slater and Bob Orton Jr come in and attack both of them. Anyone know the date of this? it's from december 1983 for sure. It does not look like its the same taping where Slater won the US title from Valentine. Maybe the tv tapings from December 7 in Spartanburg?
