Claw, Do you mind posting your Backlund results here? I have saved alot of the programs from the CWF site and some other WWWF sources I have but don't have a lot of results for Backlund. If anyone wants me to post some of the old CWF programs or WWWF stuff I've gotten I'd be happy to. Thanks in advance! Eric

Eric, Backlund will be next after the St. Louis NWA Title Matches and Piper's early bouts.

I'd be interested in his non-WWWF results. Haven't seen many of those.

I would be interested in seeing Backlund's "drive to the championship". One of the (never-ending) debates on kayfabememories is if Backlund was a "draw". Those that support Backlund are quick to point out that his win over Graham was a complete surprise and hurt him quite a bit (people did not think he would last) All I really remember is a TV win over George the Animal Steele. I have heard about a TV Texas Death match vs Tor Kamata where he gets put over well but I do not remember this. I think he may have "done some jobs" before winning the belt (usually done to set up legit challengers for the new champion) but that may also have hurt his "momentum" in the eyes of the fans and added to the "out of the blue" surprise.

Backlund's first territory was Tri States for Leroy McGuirk. Those that watched McGuirk TV described him as a TV jobber and were shocked when Bob went on to have success in the Amarillo territory because he lost so much in Tri States. I don't have many listings from this territory. 10/29/73 Tulsa, OK @ Assembly Center Tarzan Baxter & Scandor Akbar beat Grizzly Smith & Dewey Robertson Ken Mantell beat Randy Tyler 2-0 Mephisto & Dante beat Pez Whatley & Oni Wiki Wiki Bobby Whitlock drew Bob Backlund 10:00 11/1/73 New Orleans, LA @ St. Bernard Civic Auditorium Benny & Billy McGuire beat Stan Kowalski & Kim Duk Dewey Robertson beat Tank Morgan on a 3rd fall dq Seigfried Stanke beat Bob Backlund Randy Tyler beat Silento Rodriguez Rip Tyler beat Jim Ledford 11/12/73 Tulsa, OK @ Assembly Center Ken Mantell beat Tarzan Baxter Scandor Akbar beat Dewey Robertson Kim Duk & Stan Kowalski beat Mephisto & Dante Bob Backlund drew Bill Ash 12/5/73 Baton Rouge Jake Smith & Bob Remus beat Dante & Mephisto dq Gentle Ben the wrestling bear beat Dante Oni Wiki Wiki beat Bob Whitlock Blackjack Slade beat Bob Backlund Note: I question the Bob Remus listing. I don't think he did much at all before winning the belt, high profile wins or losses. From what I understand, he just showed up one day and was champ soon after. It's weird because less than a year earlier he had the run with the Missouri title, which was the stepping stone to the NWA belt. The next thing you know, he's in the WWWF.

I am thinking he was in the WWWF for at least six months (and maybe even a year) before winning the belt. And doing nothing. Then BANG - he's the champ.

beejmi wrote: I would be interested in seeing Backlund's "drive to the championship". The papers were not kind to Bob either at first. The Philadelphia papers were calling him a uknown even after he won the title. Bob didnt even wrestle in the WWWF full time before winning the title. That also hurt him because he was not a full time WWWF wrestler, nor did he have a real history with the WWWF. It took almost a full year to get Bob over in the WWWF. Actually he didnt get over till after Graham left in the end of 1978. Coincidence? Who knows for sure. But Pennsylvania and Maine he was not over in for 1978 for sure. Claw your allowed to take the hidden stuff on my board and post it here for Bobs appearances in the WWWF for 1977 and 1978. The router is also fixed directly to my home computer now also. Look thru it in the Texas stuff. I do have stuff for Backlund there, Just not sure it all is scanned over yet and loaded their yet. I have more for 1977 and 1978, but I have not copied them over. For those who don't understand I have a hidden message board on the internet. Part of it deals with the WWWF and my personal research into it. What I have listed there is matches that are not elsewhere on the internet. Also Claw has direct access to my home computer where there is a server also, and it had tons of stuff on it, that I can not afford to host on the internet. Basically as I have said, I have to much research, and no time and no place to really unload it correctly. The only way to finalize my Graham record book was, and is to break every city apart. So it is what i have been doing. There is no one else out there doing that type of reasearch. No one has even technically done the major cities for the WWWF. So I have been buiding a database that Is getting to be outlandishly big with just WWWF matches that are not elsewhere known. I have done more than I can even scan over and type up. It has been suggested to me that I should open a Capitol wrestling web site for what I have done, starting with McMahon moving into the Washington DC area. Because I can rival any wrestling web site out there, with stuff no one has. It sounds bad, but I personally am not adding to this record history. I jsut dont feel like building up someone elses Backlund career book. No it isnt against anyone doing such a book, nor is it because he was booked to take the title from graham. I have never put my finger on why I just dont like the guy. I respect him for his accomplishments, but I just do not know... I will gladly donate to the Piper record when it starts for the unknown Texas stuff, and will gladly at times give out total histories of cities at times if there is a need to. Great to devote so much time to research, but if not to share with those who'd be educated and enlightened by it, why do it? After all the guys who are gonna cite it and use it most often would likely be Claw and Graham Cawthon, neither of which have any issues with "crediting" where it's due. No issues that I've ever seen anyway. Last edited on Thu Nov 1st, 2007 12:11 am by BigJ |

The router is fixed. Awesome. Big J, The sharing/not sharing and crediting/not crediting issue has been debated before. Graham and I do credit Ron all the time. But there are many others that don't and that is what pisses Ron off. Ron's research is shared with Wong Lee, me and a few other guys. Wong and I archive stuff for Ron. We type it out and learn a shit load in the process. Eventually Graham Cawthon will be given all the WWWF stuff. He has been given a ton already. Again Ron's problem is not with me or Graham but rather with others that shall remain nameless. I will say one researcher in particular used Ron's research and a bunch of research by other historians as a hook to get people to pay money for his site.

I didnt say I wasnt going to share it. Please read again above and you can see I gave Claw full permission to post anything with Bob in it. I was stating that I am not going to be adding to the topic at hand. Claw can add all that stuff easilly. It is already typed up and ready to go. And then it will be in chronological order also, rather than me throwing it in after he makes his posts. And I also said I would donate to the Piper book and also whole cities if need to be. I jsut personally dont feel like adding to Bobs career personally. I have no interest or drive to do this. It is why I left Claw know, so he can add my stuff to it. Me not shareing would have been for me to private message Claw and tell him specifically not to include that stuff. My problem is and I can see it already. If I add to this topic, I will start to make Bob look bad with attendance figures and try to voice my personal opinion of his ability to draw for in 1977 and 1978. And I realize this would be wrong of me, so I am stepping out of Bobs career so it is done in a nicer way. I know part of this is my fault for not being all that great with how I say things. I do share, and share odd stuff. The problem I see at times is that people think I need to seek out certain individuals, or sites and give them my findings. I do not owe anyone anything. I do not need to seek out sites and individuals. Anyone that I ever got anything from has got ten fold back from me. I am always getting slack for not going to Cawthorns site and dropping off my findings. Two reasons I do not do that is: 1. Graham Cawthorn always got his results from the other sites before he started his message board. He belongs to the same sites I do plus more. He can easilly copy and paste. There is no reason I have to report in to him. I consider him a good friend, and have chatted with him many times. There is no issues between us at all. But he is not my boss, and he does not pay for my research. 2. My site has been accused of stealing his sites work, even tho I have donated hundreds of results to that site, and have given him litteraly tons of clippings. Yet I am told in the past, I stoled those clippings that are on my site (my own research) from his site. It just gets absurd at times. It makes me feel like putting water marks over all my clippings to share on the net. Then no matter what, it would show where they came from. It is easy to do in massive bunches of pics at one shot. I just hate to ruin clippings, and it is childish to do that also. 1959, 1963, and 1964 Bridgeport clippings. Click the above to see the weekly TV taping write ups and results. I see no one else doing city research like that above. That stuff is not known all over the internet, nor is it shared. I shared it, it is my work, hosted by me. That is a link I dropped off 2 days ago to another message board. I do have 1960, 1961, and 1962 to add to that. I just need to finish the web pages for that when I get home. I am working with them presently on my laptop, but I am also having fun messing with Crimson Mask on another forum board over something he said. But when I get home I will be uploading the rest of the files to the internet for all to see. I have brung all the weekly TV taping cards from Washingon, DC before and now from Bridgeport, CT to the internet. The washington DC stuff when I posted links to it before, for in the 50's and 60's brung no interest, just more issues. WongLee posted part of my research into the greater NYC area for one of the years in the 1930's. That topic did not get one single reply made to it. Yet it was daily matches, and matches that were never on the internet before that. This type of stuff is not in any way related to my main drive of resarch. I did not research Washington DC badck to the late 1800's or the greater NYC area to the same time period for nothing. It was done to share. I share, I just like to drop massive amounts off at one drop. I want my research to be as thorough as possible. I like my dumps of results to cover every single card held. Any area I researched, I do that in. When Cawthorn gets my stuff, he will know it. It isnt like I am going to be giving him a hundred or so results. Were talking over a thousand will be dumped on him as it stands right now. I will keep his butt busy for weeks transfering over stuff. In the past Cawthorn has instant messaged me, and said to me that he got new Graham stuff, and then dropped me a link. I went to his site, and seen nothing new. It was all my own research that others gave to him, but they never told him where they got the material from. It made Cawthorn and myself both look foolish, because here he thought he had some new awesome stuff for me, and here I thought he found something great for me, only to find out that it was mine to begin with. great to see the early Backlund results, thanks for posting those will just say that Ron had always been very generous in sharing stuff with me, problem is once something is posted on the internet it really becomes everbody's, people use pics and info from my site all the time, there are sites that just hotlink to my pics in their profiles etc, once I put it up it is free game really if they plug the site or give credit then it's a bonus. I never put stuff up to get credit just to share it it becomes very convoluted , when someone credits Graham for example when they post WWWF results , they are really crediting everyone who has ever contributed to his site, Clawmaster too , I credit CM all the time but if he got them from someone else it is a credit for him giving them to me I have contributed tons of stuff , mostly clippings to many of the territory sites out there and have received much in return, I am not a historian by any means , have spent some hours in the library but mostly just collect stuff so am very appreciative to those who do all the grunt work !
