Thanks Jim. It still makes me laugh that Backlund and Hansen were both green coming up together in Texas, and I used to think they were so different back in 1981. ![]()

From the 1993 Royal Rumble, Yokozuna won the Royal Rumble in 66:35 to earn the title shot at Bret Hart at Wrestlemania in Las Vegas on 4/4. It started with the legendary Ric Flair vs. Bob Backlund match-up for 2:00. Over the years I've seen Dr. Flair pull out many cures for some of the most deadly diseased wrestlers and literally save matches with some of the most terminally untalented wrestlers around. Yet with Backlund, if there's a cure, they haven't discovered it yet. It was a really bad opening which is surprising because in putting those two together you'd have thought otherwise. Papa Shango came in to save the day, (as if) and with a separated shoulder, a lot of help he was. He was out of there at 2:32, obviously his 30 second tenure was because he really wasn't ready to work. Backlund took all the chops and his chest was red. Finally Ted DiBiase sort-of-saved the day, but it really didn't get rolling until Brian Knobbs came in and DiBiase and Flair bumped like they were rubber balls. Next in was Virgil. Knobbs was out at 8:59 when DiBiase ducked a charge. Jerry Lawler entered to almost no crowd reaction (but it was still more then Backlund got). Although Lawler is a heel on television, he worked mainly face style. It's really sad to see these legends of the early 80s like Lawler and Backlund be such nothing acts on a major national show. Funny to see Flair and Lawler go at it since there is some legit heat there, or at least was at one point. Evidently there was a lot more heat on Lawler then just with Flair. Max Moon was in next, but he didn't last long, missing a crescent kick on Lawler and flying over. His spaceship was double parked anyway. Genichiro Tenryu was next in, to the least crowd reaction thus far. Even with Flair in, it was getting bad at this point, although Flair was the focal point of everything up to this point and the rest of the guys were just staying out of his way. Mr. Perfect saved the day, getting a big pop and of course locking right up with Flair. Skinner was in next. At 18:37, Perfect clotheslined Flair over the top. The match died at this point. Koko Ware was in next, wearing pants that covered his eyelids. Well, almost. That outfit looks ridiculous. Perfect dropkicked Skinner out at 21:15. Nobody missed him. Samu was in next, then Berzerker. Perfect threw out Lawler at 24:54. Berzerker kicked Virgil over the top in 25:15. DiBiase, Samu and Ware all got Perfect on the apron and Lawler, who had already been eliminated, started trying to pull him out by the hair. After a long tease, Perfect was eliminated in 25:25. The idea was obviously that Mr. Perfect would carry things until it was Undertaker's turn, like a relay face. Flair runs the first leg, then Hennig, then Undertaker, then Tatanka, then Yokozuna and finally Randy brings it to its climax. Only problem is they needed one more person during each leg to work with, and only Earthquake for Yokozuna fit the bill. Undertaker was next in. Berzerker threw Backlund out threw the middle rope and hit him with a chair twice. Bob sold it by napping on the apron for about 10 minutes. It was okay until somebody woke him up. Undertaker then started dumping everyone in sight, with Samu out at 27:05 and Tenryu at 27:26. Then the cursed Terry Taylor came in to no reaction. They've destroyed his credibility and then some. His credibility was done wonders for again, as he lasted all of 44 seconds before he and Ware went out together, thanks to DiBiase. Undertaker dumped DiBiase at 29:04 and Berzerker at 29:41, leaving him alone in the ring (Backlund was still on his nap time). So unannounced, uninvited, not involved in the match, out comes the nearly eight feet tall and growing by the day formerly known as El Gigante (Jorge Gonzales), with a new beard and wearing what appeared to an Ultimate Warrior's old underwear (skin colored bodytights with muscles drawn on them) that the tailor accidentally made a few sizes too big. He got in the ring and did the stare-down with Undertaker. The stare-down wasn't bad. But then he threw the first punch. It reminded me of a show at the Meadowlands a few years back where El Gigante and Sid Vicious were on opposite sides in a six-man and everyone wanted to see them lock-up. Once they locked up and Gigante threw the first blow, nobody wanted to see either of them again. Well, he threw the first blow and that hurt it live. Giant Gonzales will draw a lot of money, but the amount of money he'll draw is directly proportional to the lack of actual body contact he does that anyone sees. Anyway, he destroyed Undertaker and threw him over in 30:52 and Undertaker laid on the apron dead until a few minutes later when the ghost of Percy Pringle showed up with the urn and he limped out of the ring. While all this fun was going on (and actually it was fun compared to watching a Battle Royal that would never end), Damian Demento and IRS drew their numbers but they never got in the ring. You can imagine how much people were anticipating that. Backlund woke up around now so there were three in there. Finally Tatanka came in followed by Jerry Saggs. If things weren't bad enough, next came Typhoon. The one bad thing about Gonzales (as if there's only one) is that a huge monster like Typhoon who is 6-6 looks like just another short fat guy after seeing Gonzales. Fatu was in next, followed by Earthquake. Quake threw out Typhoon at 43:50. Carlitos Colon was in next. Apparently Gorilla Monsoon talked of him as being a young star. Well, he's too young for social security, so I guess that qualifies. Colon threw out Demento in 45:55. Tito Santana was in next. Backlund threw out Fatu in 47:17. Rick Martel was in for his final WWF appearance. IRS flew over the top when Earthquake ducked a charge at 49:35. Yokozuna was in next. More reaction than any of the last group of entrants, but not what I had expected. He threw out Tatanka in 52:05 and Colon in 52:25. Fans were into Earthquake locking up with him. It was an interesting match-up. At this point Owen Hart flew in. Yokozuna threw out Earthquake in 53:55 and people seemed impressed. The last two to enter were Repo Man and Randy Savage. Yokozuna threw out Santana in 58:04. Owen Hart dropkicked Saggs out in 58:24. Yokozuna threw out Hart in 58:55. It looked as though Hart blew out his knee taking the best bump of the show (unlike the Battle Royals that were legendary here in the 70s, you didn't have any insane bumps over the top although this was as close as it got). Savage threw out Repo Man in 58:59. Backlund threw out Martel in 60:30 leaving the final three as Backlund, Yokozuna and Savage. At about the 45:00 mark, some people started caring about Backlund but it wasn't anywhere close to how it was made out on television. When Yokozuna dumped him in 61:18, there were almost as many cheers as boos.
