Not sure if this supposed title win is common knowledge

Asbury Park 1963-09-20

G'day indikator,

Good find, mate!

It's interesting that the newspaper has referred to the championship as a "World Title". I was of the understanding that this championship was known as the WWWF US Tag Team Title from 1963 to 1967. Perhaps it's just newspaper semantics.  :)

The accepted title history recognises that Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard won the US Tag Team Title from from Buddy Austin & Great Scott on 16 May 1963 in Washington, DC and lost the championship to Killer Kowalski & Gorilla Monsoon on 14 November 1963, again in Washington, DC.

As you know, no mention is made of the 20 September 1963 loss by Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard to Bruno Sammartino & Vittorio "Argentine" Apollo in Asbury Park, NJ that is highlighted in your newspaper clipping.

In inspecting the results in this topic's Bruno Sammartino Record Book I note that on 5 November 1963 Bruno Sammartino & Vittorio "Argentine" Apollo wrestled Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard on TV in Bridgeport, CT. Unfortunately the result of this match is not known.

Perhaps Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard regained the US Tag Team Title on that date thus allowing them to lose the championship to Killer Kowalski & Gorilla Monsoon on 14 November 1963?  ;)

Cheers!

Ed

Ed, back in the mid-60's when the WWWF ran house shows in Asbury Park and Atlantic City New Jersey they would have a lot of "local" feuds which would play out in those arenas only. This was especially true in Atlantic City where in the sixties before the casinos came in, AC was a resort town (albeit a dying one), the WWWF ran there only during the summer months. Teaneck, Jersey City, and Newark usually went with the regular formula possibly because of their closer proximity to NYC.

Therefore, an Apollo/Sammartino U.S. Tag Team title win could have popped the crowd for the one night and then completely been forgotten about by the next Asbury Park show in November.

G'day WongLee,

Thanks for the explanation, mate.

I'll admit to being a pro wrestling tragic.

I love the concept of title lineage and was hoping that the Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard - Bruno Sammartino & Vittorio Apollo - Skull Murphy & Brute Bernard - Killer Kowalski & Gorilla Monsoon title changes in 1963 may have been a possibility. :)

Your posts are always of interest to me and I really appreciate your knowledge of pro wrestling.

Cheers!

Ed

I don't want to be too rude, but could you please post the complete cards? Though I have to say that it is nice to know that because of the posts I won't have to get frustrated looking for non-existing results in the papers.

I'm wondering if there's been a mix-up in this record from 1961:

03/27 New York, NY Bruno Sammartino beat Haystacks Calhoun

I've also seen this as:

March 27, 1961 - New York City, NY - Madison Square Garden

W Haystacks Calhoun

And like this (on NYProWrestling.com):

03/25/1961 CWC - New York, NY
Bruno Sammartino def Haystack Calhoun
Pat O'Connor def Karl Von Hess

(The O'Connor-Hess match is also mentioned in the Pat O'Connor Record book.)

As far as I can tell, Bruno beat Haystacks, and O'Connor beat Hess at MSG on 2/27/61. There was a MSG card on 3/27/61, but Hess lost to Johnny Valentine while the three others were not on this card. I'm not sure if O'Connor (NWA champion) did in fact meet Hess somewhere else in New York on 3/25/61, but Sammartino appearantly had a match in Detroit on that date.
