Probably best that we stay out of Chris' thread (great stuff) What were the things that surprised you? This one stands out to me from 1984 February 11 I was shocked to see Andre (even in his early days) lose to guys like Adnan El Kaissie I couldn't count how many straight losses to the Ultimate Warrior in the late 80s. At least two dozen in a row. Surprising.

I was suprised at how many matches he "participated" in Japan at the end.

The Kaissie bout in Iraq was detailed in Sheik's book. there are a few pictures of their match there if I remember right. The Ultimate Warrior losses around the horn don't surprise me. After seeing him lose in MSG, you knew at that time the finishes were pretty much the same around the horn so more would be coming, even if you didn't here about them specifically.

Posted: Tue Nov 13th, 2007 10:28 am I was suprised at how many matches he "participated" in Japan at the end. Andre worked for Baba's group from 1990-1992. Being a long time friend, Baba booked himself and Andre in tag matches initially and then when Andre's health really started to go down hill, Baba booked 6 man tag matches. The matches were normally booked normally less than 10 minutes and generally against three very small Japanese men - to overemphasize Andre/Baba's size since both men were slouching at the time. The names escape me, but I believe one or two of the opponents were men that Andre faced when he first starting working in Japan - 20 years earlier. One of the matches that was filmed which was interesting was Baba/Andre facing Doug Masters and Nitron (Tyler Mane). To my knowledge it was the only time (at least on film) that Andre was in the ring with two guys so close to his height. Tyler was probably 1.5" shorter and Masters appeared to be close to Andre's height - at least in his wrestling boots. Granted Andre was probably a bit shorter then than earlier in his career, I was just surprised Andre agreed to participate in the match - since his height was always protected. Yeah, especially during '80 - '82 time frame, the Japanese promtion was booking matches that would have never had happened or been reported in any of the U.S. wrestling magazines. Andre v. Backlund, Andre v. Dusty, Andre v. Atlas, etc....Some of the photos popped up in the Japanese mags at the time.

I believe you mean Butch Masters, not Doug Masters. Doug, although he certainly toured Japan, isn't that big and Butch was listed at 7', 360 pounds. And I found this: 1990- This was my "breakout" year. I worked an independent show in Oklahoma and was introduced to Nitron. After the show, the promoter suggested we should tag together and go to Japan. I contacted Dory Funk and he got us booked with All-Japan for the yearly tag tournament. Believe it or not, Butch is still going strong as Colossus the Gladiator now and looks great at only 43. Honestly he looks like a WWE star and I'd much prefer him to Great Khali. He achieved most of his success as Giant Warrior back in the day. Last edited on Tue Nov 13th, 2007 11:15 pm by srossi ____________________ This thread was great before AA ruined it. |

My Japanese knowledge is extremely limited but if you have any results or info on those Andre vs. Backlund, Rhodes or Atlas matches from that time-frame, I'd love to see it. Thanks in advance (and wishing), Eric

I'm gpoing to be adding his Texas stuff to this that is misisng. And this is a good idea to do this with future topics also. I found Andre normally worked a week at a time in a territory from my research. I feel bad now for the Bob backlund thread. Can you split topics here and remove my comments to a separate thread?

Of course, by the time the Ultimate Warrior got ahold of him, the "undefeated" streak was long gone and pretty much meaningless anyway. Although personally, since they did so much to cover up Andre's health problems, I would have been expecting a titanic battle--- Andre vs. Ultimate--- and I would have felt pretty ripped off.
