This was the only time I'm aware of they wrestled each other for the title. I don't have the full card.

February 13, 1982 Orlando, FL
Ric Flair drew Andre the Giant

It seems as if no promoter anywhere felt comfortable putting the strap on Andre, no matter where he went. Is that because they didn't feel they could sell him to the fans as Champ?

Did he ever face Hogan?

In the WWF, he did. Most notably, Hogan lost the title to Andre on February 5, 1988, Andre promptly gave the title to Ted DiBiase. The tile was declared vacant and a tournament was held at Wrestle Mania IV, which was won by Randy Savage.

I believe he received title shots against Savage, who was a face, for the vst majority of his title reign. I think he may have been granted a shot or two against Superstar Billy Graham for the WWWF Heavyweight Title.

I think he meant in the AWA, and I don't remember ever hearing anything about that.  I believe Hogan and Andre did an arm-wrestling angle in NWA Southeastern and amybe had a match, and then of course was their first WWF feud in the early '80s.  I don't know if they crossed paths other than that.

Andre and Savage definitely did wrestle while Savage was champion though.  Not good matches at all.  Pretty sure Savage won all of those by DQ.

Vince Sr. was controlling his bookings and didn't want to tie him to one territory for any length of time. Plus, he couldn't lose by pinfall.

And he didn't need the title.  He was a special attraction who could be brought in instead of the champ and still do the same business.
