All Star Wrestling in the Salt Palace Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah From the adverts: "All Star Wrestling in sanctioned by the American Wrestling Association and is produced by Verne Gagne through the Minneapolis Boxing-Wrestling Club. Wally Karbo is matchmaker, and Gentleman John P. Olsen is promoter." These are the results as listed in the Salt Lake Tribune, with additional information from adverts and previews. When results were not available in the newspaper, I have used clawmaster's results and noted accordingly. I have recorded any notable differences between the newspapers results and clawmaster's results. Thursday, April 8, 1982 (9,100) Jerry Blackwell beat Brad Rheingans Baron Von Raschke beat The Iron Duke Greg Gagne beat Sgt. Jacques Goulet Ken Patera drew Jim Brunzell (30:00) Bobby Duncum & Bobby Heenan beat Hulk Hogan & Buck Zumhofe $50,000 14-Man Battle Royal: Hulk Hogan beat Ken Patera, Bobby Duncum, Greg Gagne, Jerry Blackwell, Brad Rheingans, Baron Von Raschke, Bobby Heenan, Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey, Buck Zumhofe, Chief Gator Wolf, Sgt. Jacques Goulet and The Iron Duke NOTE: Chief Gator Wolf, presumably Steve Gatorwolf, was a sub for Lord James Blears. The Iron Duke was referee Jim Mitchell, and was billed as Mitchell in the advert. Wednesday, May 5, 1982 Buck Zumhofe beat Bobby Heenan Brad Rheingans drew Jim Brunzell Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey beat Greg Gagne Ken Patera & Bobby Duncum beat Baron Von Raschke & Tito Santana Hulk Hogan beat AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel via dq NOTE: Bockwinkel was disqualified due to interference from his manager Bobby Heenan. Jerry Blackwell assisted Sheik Adnan in his victory. Also advertised was an offer of $5,000 to anyone who could slam Blackwell. The advert challenged all "tough miners, roughnecks, cowboys, truck drivers, lumberjacks, brick layers and farmers." There was no mention of the challenge in the newspaper results. Monday, May 31, 1982 (Memorial Day) Brad Rheingans beat Bobby Duncum Buck Zumhofe nc Sgt. Jacques Goulet Baron Von Raschke beat Bobby Heenan Ken Patera beat Tito Santana Slam Contest: Hulk Hogan beat Jerry Blackwell (12:57) NOTE: For the Slam Contest, both men were advertised to have put up $5,000, winner takes all. Saturday, June 26, 1982 Buck Zumhofe beat Sgt. Jacques Goulet Jerry Blackwell beat Brad Rheingans Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey beat Baron Von Raschke AWA World Tag Team Champions Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell beat Ken Patera & Duncum via dq NOTE: Referee Eldon Rich had given the match and the title in the main event to Patera and Duncum, but reversed his decision because Duncum was not the legal man when he pinned Brunzell. Friday, August 6, 1982 (4,960) Rick Martel drew Ray Stevens Otto Wanz beat Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey (11:50) AWA World Tag Team Champions Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell ddq Ken Patera & Bobby Duncum Handicap Match: Hulk Hogan beat Nick Bockwinkel & Bobby Heenan (16:22) Saturday, August 28, 1982 Sgt. Jacques Goulet Greg Gagne beat Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey via dq Ken Patera & Bobby Duncum beat Hulk Hogan & Baron Von Raschke AWA World Heavyweight Champion Otto Wanz beat Jerry Blackwell via dq Thursday, November 4, 1982 Greg Gagne beat Tom Lintz Baron Von Raschke beat Bobby Duncum via dq Jim Brunzell beat Nick Bockwinkel Jerry Blackwell & Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey beat Brad Rheingans & Steve Olsonoski Hulk Hogan beat Adrian Adonis Andre the Giant won a 17-Man Battle Royal NOTE: The results of this card were not carried in the newspaper, and the above results come from clawmaster's results. From the advert, the battle royal was advertised as a $50,000 16-Man Battle Royal with the other participants being Rick Martel, Brad Rheingans, Bobby Heenan, Jerry Blackwell, Bobby Duncum, Baron Von Raschke, Larry Hennig, Hulk Hogan, Greg Gagne, Tom Lintz, Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey, Jesse Ventura, Jim Brunzell, Ken Patera and Sgt. Jacques Goulet. Hulk Hogan was advertised to face Jesse Ventura in a "Strong Boy Showdown" with Leo Nomellini as special referee. Rick Martel was advertised as the partner of Rheingans. The Brunzell vs. Bockwinkel match was not advertised. The 17 men in the battle royal were most likely the 16 advertised, with Adonis and Olsonoski as substitutes for Ventura and Martel, and Bockwinkel as the 17th entrant. Monday, December 6, 1982 (5,950) Steve Olsonoski beat Tom Lintz Lone Eagle & Tiny Tim (sub. Billy the Kid) beat Little Tokyo & Hillbilly Pete (sub. Cowboy Lang) Ken Patera beat Larry Hennig Baron Von Raschke & Rick Martel beat Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey & Bobby Heenan (sub. Jacques Goulet beat Steve Olsonoski Wrist-Wrestling: Jesse Ventura beat Hulk Hogan AWA World Tag Team Champions Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell nc Jerry Blackwell & Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey NOTE: Sgt. Jacques Goulet replaced Sheik Adnan during the main event. The report is unclear, but this appears to have happened mid-match, while clawmaster's results have Goulet as a substitute. The newspaper also listed Mad Dog Vachon as being involved in the no contest, but with no explanation. It it likely that all six men were involved in the match at some point, building to next month's main event. Ventura was listed as defeating Hogan with held from Heenan, while clawmaster's results have Hogan winning via disqualification. Tuesday, March 8, 1983 Baron Von Raschke beat Bobby Heenan Jerry Lawler beat John Tolos Jesse Ventura beat Hulk Hogan via dq World Women's Champion Fabulous Moolah beat Sabrina Greg Gagne, Jim Brunzell & Mad Dog Vachon beat Jerry Blackwell, Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey & Sgt. Tuesday, May 3, 1983 Brad Rheingans beat Bobby Heenan Jesse Ventura beat Jim Brunzell Ken Patera drew Wahoo McDaniel Mad Dog Vachon & Baron Von Raschke beat Jerry Blackwell & Sgt. Jacques Goulet Rick Martel beat AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel via dq Monday, June 13, 1983 AWA World Light Heavyweight Champion Mike Graham beat Buck Zumhofe Wahoo McDaniel beat Blackjack Lanza Greg Gagne beat John Tolos Ken Patera & Jerry Blackwell beat Baron Von Raschke & Mad Dog Vachon Rick Martel beat AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel via dq NOTE: The results of this card, bar the main event, were not carried in the newspaper, and the above results come from clawmaster's results. Eldon Rich was referee for the main event. The opening match was possibly not a title match. Monday, July 11, 1983 David Schultz beat Buck Zumhofe Greg Gagne beat Mr. Saito via dq Jim Brunzell beat Jerry Blackwell Ken Patera beat Mad Dog Vachon Rick Martel & Wahoo McDaniel beat Blackjack Lanza & Bobby Heenan NOTE: The only reference to this card in the newspapers was the general Salt Palace advert listing wrestling on this date. The above results come from clawmaster's results. Monday, August 15, 1983 David Schultz beat Baron Von Raschke via dq Mad Dog Vachon beat Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey Greg Gagne & Baron Von Raschke beat Blackjack Lanza & Bill White Hulk Hogan beat Mr. Saito via dq AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel beat Wahoo McDaniel NOTE: The only reference to this card in the newspapers was a brief preview listing the final two matches. The above results come from clawmaster's results. Monday, September 19, 1983 Brad Rheingans beat Bill White Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey drew Buck Zumhofe Handicap Match: Hulk Hogan beat Mr. Saito & David Schultz Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell beat AWA World Tag Team Champions Ken Patera & Jerry Blackwell via dq NOTE: The results of this card were not carried in the newspaper, and the above results come from clawmaster's results. Strangely, there was a detailed report of this card in the November 8 edition of the Salt Lake Tribune. The article listed the 20 battle royal entrants in the same order as the advert, so there is a chance that there were some unknown substitutions. Schultz did not participate due to injuries sustained in his earlier match, leaving 19 entrants. Andre was eliminated by Saito, who hit him with a folding chair. Saito went on to be the final man eliminated. Sunday, November 13, 1983 Brad Rheingans beat Buck Zumhofe Otto Wanz beat Bill White Superstar Billy Graham beat Jim Brunzell Handicap Match: Hulk Hogan & Andre the Giant beat Mr. Saito, David Shultz & Jerry Blackwell Rick Martel beat AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel via dq NOTE: Despite the most extensive build-up since live AWA wrestling came to Salt Lake City, the results of this card were not carried in the newspaper, and the above results come from clawmaster's results. Ken Paterera) AWA World Heavyweight Champion Nick Bockwinkel beat Brad Rheingans (22:49) Mr. Saito & Jesse Ventura beat Greg Gagne & Jim Brunzell via dq NOTE: The "Bunkhouse Brawl" was a lumberjack match with 10 men stationed outside the ring. Sunday, February 12, 1984 Brad Rheingans beat Bobby Heenan Buck Zumhofe beat Steve Regal Blackjack Mulligan beat Chris Markoff Blackjack Lanza beat Nick Bockwinkel Jesse Ventura & Mr Saito nc Baron Von Raschke & Blackjack Mulligan (sub. Mad Dog Vachon) NOTE: The newspaper preview stated that Bockwinkel was defending the AWA World Heavyweight Title, while clawmaster's results list the match as non-title. Thursday, March 15, 1984 (International Tag Team Spectacular) Blackjack Mulligan & Blackjack Lanza beat Nick Bockwinkel & Bobby Heenan Giant Baba & Genichiro Tenryu beat Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts Baron Von Raschke & Mad Dog Vachon beat Mr. Saito & Jesse Ventura via dq AWA World Heavyweight Champion Jumbo Tsuruta beat Jim Brunzell AWA World Tag Team Champions Ken Patera & Jerry Blackwell beat Greg Gagne & The Crusher NOTE: Nick Bockwinkel was advertised as the champion defending against Brunzell, although Tsuruta had won the title on February 22. Tsuruta was advertised as facing Brad Rheingans in the opening match. Heenan's advertised partner was Steve Regal. Tuesday, April 10, 1984 (5,692) Curt Hennig beat Steve Olsonoski (19:26) Jesse Ventura beat Baron Von Raschke (14:43) Steve Keirn & Stan Lane beat Larry Zbyszko & Steve Regal (2:01) Blackjack Lanza beat Nick Bockwinkel via dq Steel Cage Match: Greg Gagne, Mad Dog Vachon & The Crusher beat Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey, Ken Patera & Jerry Blackwell (Gagne > Sheik Adnan) NOTE: The main event was advertised as: "A 12-foot high steel cage will be built around the ring. The six wrestlers will be locked in the cage until there is a winner. No disqualification. No escape." The description of the finish of the main event was: "Gagne jumped from the top of the 8-foot cage on the prostrate Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey for the pin." The newspaper listed the 4-man tag team match lasting 2:01, but this may be a misprint. The advertised singles matches were Bockwinkel vs. Blackjack Mulligan, Von Raschke vs. Mr. Saito and Ventura vs. Olsonoski. Thursday, May 10, 1984 Curt Hennig drew Larry Zbyszko Steve Keirn & Stan Lane beat Jesse Ventura & Jake Milliman Princess Victoria & Velvet McIntyre beat Despina Montagas & Leilani Kai The Crusher beat Jerry Blackwell Greg Gagne beat AWA World Heavyweight Champion Jumbo Tsuruta via dq NOTE: The results of this card were not carried in the newspaper, and the above results come from clawmaster's results. Thursday, April 8, 1982 (9,100)Jerry Blackwell beat Brad RheingansBaron Von Raschke beat The Iron DukeGreg Gagne beat Sgt. Jacques GouletKen Patera drew Jim Brunzell (30:00)Bobby Duncum & Bobby Heenan beat Hulk Hogan & Buck Zumhofe$50,000 14-Man Battle Royal: Hulk Hogan beat Ken Patera, Bobby Duncum, Greg Gagne, Jerry Blackwell, Brad Rheingans, Baron Von Raschke, Bobby Heenan, Sheik Adnan Al-Kaissey, Buck Zumhofe, Chief Gator Wolf, Sgt. Jacques Goulet and The Iron DukeNOTE: The Iron Duke and Chief Gator Wolf were subs for Lord James Blears and "Jim Mitchell". Mitchell's name appeared on the newspaper advert, but there is no known wrestler with that name who wrestled in 1982. Chief Gator Wolf is presumable Steve Gatorwolf. Jim Mitchell was the large AWA referee with the deformed hand missing a few fingers. He also wrestled as the Iron Duke with a glove covering the deformity when he wrestled. He also spent time in the Vancouver and Memphis territories as Jim "The Claw" Mitchell during the early 1980s. There was no attempt at subterfuge disguising the fact that Mitchell and Iron Duke were one and the same, at least on AWA television, and may have even used Mitchell at times doing squash matches.

The AWA coming to Salt Lake City was mainstream news in the market which had not regular pro wrestling, certainly not on a major league level, in a long time. The Amarillo promotion ran a card there in 1979 with an eye towards expanding into the market, but must have drawn poorly because the promotion didn't go back. Verne Gagne told the Salt Lake Tribune that the key was getting a TV affiliate and good timeslot to make opening up the market a worthy venture. At the time, the Twin Cities station that carried All Star Wrestling also owned a station in Salt Lake City. That relationship was utilized to get on TV in Utah. Here is the Amarillo card which utilized a smaller space at the Salt Palace rather than the 12,000 plus capacity main arena that the AWA used. Joe Millich served as the local promoter. October 8, 1979 - Salt Palace Exhibition Hall - Salt Lake City 1. Larry Lane vs. Sylvano Sousa 2. Gary Young and Coconut Willie vs. Alex Perez and Little Tokyo 3. Ricky Romero vs. JJ Dillon 4. Dick Murdoch vs. Cyclone Negro Bell Time - 8:00 PM Tickets - $4.50 ringside, $3.50 general admission

The Amarillo card was a sold show, rather than Murdoch and Mulligan looking to expand their territory. There are also random Amarillo cards in Montana and Idaho that were also sold shows.

There was another one in the Bay Area too. Granted they were sold shows and the Amarillo promotion got its money in advance, or a good chunk at least, but had any of these sold show towns shown drawn well and shown potential, the local promoter would have brought them back or the Amarillo office would have taken a direct role in making new bookings. Santa Rosa, California. When the SF territory closed up, M&M somehow got their TV show on a local station. The only surviving episode of Amarillo TV that anyone knows about is from that station. They ran a show in Santa Rosa, but it was so far away from Amarillo that they had to use a lot of local talent on that show, because they couldn't get enough guys in from Texas. This was late in M&M's two year run in Amarillo. In its prime, the territory ran two shows a night, and could stretch to three on occasion. By the time of the Santa Rosa card, the roster was paper thin.
