To me, this is a squash. I'd much rather have Scott Stevens on my team. Yet Coffee won the Norris Trophy three times and Stevens never won it.

| Coffey scored goals and got points, Stevens inflicted concussions. Stevens was a better defenseman, Coffey was flashier

| Simple - late in the game and down by a goal I would want Coffey on the ice. Same situation but up by a goal I would want Stevens out there. Besides - Ray Bourque was better than both of these guys anyway and he would be on the ice late in a game whether my team was up by a goal, down by a goal or tied.

| Coffey easily. He scored and he wasn't a blatant cheap shot artist of a scumbag that Stevens was.

Stevens had the misfortune of playing in the shadow of guys like Ray Bourque and Paul Coffey. Kind of like Brad Park never winning the Norris because of some guy named Bobby Orr.

Since I saw Coffey regularly with the Red Wings I choose Stevens.
The game had changed by that time and Coffey's style of play made him a tremendous liability. He was always caught in too deep in the offensive zone. Bryan Murray wouldn't even play him late in games.
He also scored the game winning goal in game one of the Western Conference Finals against the Aves, into his own motherfucking net!!!

There was a great line one time about Coffey: Both goalies had reason to be nervous when he was on the ice.
As on offensive force, he was one of the best. As a defenseman, he was barely NHL level.

Another one was at the team functions at the end of each season Coffey had to introduce himself to the goalies.

I hate him as a Devil but Stevens was a real defenseman. Coffey was a forward on the blue line.

| I'm gonna say Coffey - the numbers he put up were incredible.

Really? He was great, but my last memories were the Wings giving his sorry ass away in the Primeau for Shanahan deal.

The Paul Coffey era in Boston ( 2001 - 02 ) was pretty sad:
Games: 18
Goals: 0
Assists: 4
Points: 4
Penalty Minutes: 30
Plus/Minus: -6
